Besides the normal business related aspects of starting a "pawn shop". Would I have to hire a professional "sneakerhead" or could I fair well myself utilizing online resources to verify authenticity?

Also, what are your personal thoughts on this? There's only one other Kat I see doing this. He's remodeling his business right now.

Thanks famalama.

Instagram has 100's of people doing this. Try there with first to find the clientele in your area and see what their attracted to. Knowing what they want is the most important thing

If your research tells you this, my instincts tell me you need to try another line of hustling.

The sneakergame is so over saturated
It's not a game but it is over saturated with a bunch of sucka's who are in it for just the $$$ when Nike or any of the other companies get done with their asses and that bubble pops their going to be left with a lot of bullshit that won't be worth a damn but what someone will haggle you for em for.

professional "sneakerhead"
If you don't know what the fuck your doing even a professional can get duked.Your cousin gonna have you leaking money out,it's a bad idea because what sets you apart from Ebay?Niketalk? and the rest of the instagram hustlers?.You think you gonna buy low and sell high?well why would they do that when they could just use one of the sites I mentioned before for than your offering.

I used to do it back in 01,I couldn't get jordans unless I brought em off of the streets and 9 times out of 10 they were fake and some dudes I dealt with didn't care so I would hit over the head.Them days are long gone, dope boys, kids and even grandma's are internet savvy.

Good luck anyays....update on ho it turns out

Teen opens world’s first pawn shop for $15,000 sneakers

Forget stocks. Sneaker futures are making Wall Street look like a swap meet.
High-end kicks are becoming the currency of choice in New York, and one 16-year-old is taking advantage of the trend — using his own five-figure stock of 45 mint-condition basketball shoes to open the world’s first sneaker pawn shop.

“Young kids don’t have jewelry. They don’t have cars,” said Troy Reed, dad of young entrepreneur Chase “Sneakers” Reed. “But what they do have is the thousands of dollars worth of sneakers in their house.”

Chase, a 10th-grader at Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem, still marvels over pictures of the freshest sneaker designs online and waits in line for hours to add to his collection. Only now he and his father are also getting them from fellow “investors” who want quick cash.

They have all sorts of reasons for selling short. One pawned fancy footwear to pay for his brother’s funeral. Two teen girls liquidated their sneakers to pay for prom dresses. Another savvy *investor flipped a pair of LeBron Crown Jewels and two pairs of Jordans and used the thousands in profit to pay for his move to The Bronx from Brooklyn.

The store’s priciest pawned pairs so far — those Crown Jewels — are commanding $1,400, more than five times the $270 sticker price.
“I don’t look at it like a business. It’s what I do. It’s what I breathe,” said Chase. “It’s an idea that’s right in front of your face. It’s just about bringing the idea to life.”

During school hours, his father and their sneaker-maven pal Rahsaan “Uncle Bless” Capers man the shop at Lenox Avenue and West 120th Street. They’re looking for “high-end sneakers or dead-stock sneakers” — pairs that are no longer being manufactured. If a prospective pawner’s kicks qualify, they give the shoes a whiff, check to see if they’re yellowing and examine the soles for excessive wear.

“After we evaluate it, we’ll give the kid, say, $100 for the sneakers. If he wants them back, he’ll pay the $100, plus $20 for storing the sneakers,” Troy said.

If someone makes an *offer, the pawner is notified and has the right of first refusal, provided they can pony up the cash. If the sneakers sell for more, the pawner keeps 80 percent of the profit and the rest goes to the store.
A lightly worn pair’s value can jump exponentially compared to its initial retail price. A pair of Nike Air Yeezys — Kanye West’s signature sneakers — are currently selling for from $1,700 to $15,000 on eBay. Originally, they went for $263. Kanye’s own purported pair of Yeezys are going for $50,000.
Capers, who owns three pairs of Yeezys, said he has been offered close to $17,000 for the trio — a better profit margin than *Apple stock.

“I’m still not ready to bring them in yet,” he laughed. “I’m waiting for a sneaker expo first.”
The $30,000 in seed money for Sneaker Pawn came from Chase selling off his own collection — which peaked at 200 pairs.
He and his dad came up with the idea when Chase asked to borrow $50 spending money after waiting all night to dole out his *father’s hard-earned cash on a new release.
“I was like, ‘Are you serious?’ I’m holding these sneakers until I get my $50 back,” said Troy Reed, who got his start in business making and selling documentaries about Harlem druglords like Alpo and Rich Porter.
But Chase didn’t just plant the seed for the idea or help raise start-up money. After school, he does homework and then stays up late custom-painting sneakers. Typically, he’ll earn between $150 and $250 for each custom paint job.
“Luckily when the store opened, school started slowing down,” he said.

I have to say it now..you are one of the realest niggas on the board!

You know your shit!

This man is right...98 percent of your market on the net don't buy shit, they are just on Instagram and FB doing and reading dumb shit.

You can make this a lucrative business but you have to think location, business structure and overhead.

It will not be easy but you can make it work with the right marketing!

Good looking out. I'm going to weigh my options. I was speaking specifically on giving short term loans on sneakers and other expensive urban gear. Including iPhones, watches, etc. I don't want to get into rehabbing. Pretty much an "Urban pawn shop". I would also like to sell clothing out of this business as well.

I know security and surveillance would be a big factor also.

Posting dude opening a store

do you know how the business is doing? Have any of you been in there?

Dude you don't know shit about sneakers, so please stop. It's not as easy as you think.

You mentioning how they have sneaker cons is proof. Anybody in to sneakers already knows that shit. I've also known dudes who flopped. Dude I know was one of the first ones doing it in the area, got comfortable and didn't promote his third one enough and that shit was dead...add to that a bunch of other dudes started doing it. So unless you have a big one like DC, Atlanta, Chicago...that shit ain't that easy and you aren't making money like that.

People selling sneakers have already networked and developed relationships to get their product. You know how many "resellers" couldn't full fill or even get Chicago 1's? That's how you make your money, not over some pro stars or playoff lows. You'll have to sell 20 pair to maybe make $500 as opposed to one pair of mirror foams. Unless you're able to get dudes to preorder, and still if you're stuck with product that isn't selling since JB is flooding the market weekly. Plus I'm pretty positive Nike is going to start coming down on people doing that shit or at least making it harder.

The market is oversaturated, because everyone thinks it's a way to get rich. It's not and it's a lot of work.

Anyone can get a sneaker website and start selling kicks, because you can easily set up a big cartel site or using instagram. A physical store is actually antiquated as is consignment. You're going to have to get a ton of foot traffic.

And the majority of people buying sneakers are 13-22. You don't think they know about the internet? Muthafuckas programming bots and ATC's are you're talking about they don't know how to use the internet like this is 2000? Every damn company has an app. Nike's if you're able to get through, you just enter a password and press fuckin buy. Footlocker you just try to buy.

Yeah, you have your people who will pay more to go to Flightclub, but that's not your normal clientele. And again that's Flightclub, which is like Walmart.

You obviously have no clue how big this sneaker shit is. It's not something you just get in to casually...and I know what the fuck I'm talking about.

No disrespect to Slim aka Jets aka Lennox Mall Rainbows, but if I'm the brains behind the operation and have the connects...why the fuck do I need you?

that's great juss because u kno somebody that failed dosen't mean that somebody else won't succeed..i kno a few people who have own sneaker stores for decades and still goin on strong..the most over used term in the world is "oversaturated"..i hear that in almost every bizzness and yet kno people that enter and do good/great while others fail..the truth is very lil people have/know great blueprints or kno how to do things from a diff angle..example selling weed many people sell weed lot of people struggle while others do very well, why cause they use diff angles on selling their product or have diff cliental, lot of people aren't versatile at what they do and fail.. now back to this sneaker store thing i've seen many stores open and close from mom and pops to big chains like footlocker etc, yet the few mom and pop owners i kno stay busy and even progess and get even bigger cliental..i'm saying dude could be in the rite town, have the rite cliental, get the rite promotion, or get the rite angle to be a success..bgol nigs always try to shoot down entrepreneurship cause they have failure and underachieving mentalities

I run a pawn shop and I experimented with taking in shoes for awhile and its a real pain in the ass. Soon as cats heard I was taking shoes they were bringing in old dusty ass shoes in left and right (and according to them every shoe brought in has only been worn once) and getting upset when i turn them away. And i'm not expert on J's and their are tons of Fake J's out there, and it can be hard to tell sometime. On top of that dudes don't understand how the pawn business works. If shoes cost $150 brand new retail, nobody is going to want to pay more then half of that at pawn shop. so you can only give somebody $40 to leave from you to make profit. And if it comes to having to sell the shoe most people arent going to want a "used shoe". So no matter what the market is in your area, finding someone willing to buy a used shoe, having the shoe they want, and in their size, leaves a really small customer base. I'm not saying don't do it, wish you the best of luck, but just letting you know the b.s. thats gonna come along with it.

That bubble is getting bigger...

They see what Nike is doing, they see the demand, they see the lines, the raffles, the ebays, the stories of unordinary success's and think it's easy to just collect a bunch of shoes and place a price tag on em.:lol:Again good luck!

Man, get that fuckin fake ass wanna be Dame Dash psycho babble the fuck out of here

what??? there are various people on this board that always pm me asking for my input about the game/certain topics and ask me to share it with the board..various people on this board personally ask me to make a thread dedicated to stripclub life, etc..now if u feel that i come off as a kno it all it must be because u said something wrong and i corrected u and u felt butthurt cause i posted facts and u didn't..i notice various people blurt out bullshit with zero facts and try to pass it out as truth and will argue bigtime when facts are posted and they are proven wrong..to think about it i think various times u were 1 of those guys so now u hold on to some fag ass gripe and call me a kno it all..no i don't kno it all , never claimed i knew it all, juss speak from experience, ur juss 1 of them cats that knew little to nothing and hate when u were exposed for it..i've seen u post some dumbshit b4 on other topics and knew nothing about it and argue bigtime with other posters even though u was wrong..like i said u are 1 them posters.. now i don't want to ruin this guy thread with this petty back and forth with u..so as i said to the op do ur research and if ur gut says go for it go for it

Greatly appreciated. I KNOW there will be tons of bullshit. Especially dealing with black folks, YOUNG black folks in particular doing business with one that's also black owned. We're in the process of acquiring a store front for selling natural goods. Wifey got a couple of wholesale accounts she's working on.

I want to open an "Urban" store, but I may put it off until this new venture is up and running.

You need to familiarize yourself with the knocks offs as well as the difference between remastered shoes (Jordan's).

I wouldn't rely on anyone to authenticate something as coveted as sneakers within the sneaker community.

What resources have you been looking at to educate yourself?

Good luck.

You have to have a competitive advantage if you are opening a sneaker pawn business or trying to open a reseller/consignment store. You have to be able to pay retail or below retail on specific wanted Jordan's/Nike's/Yeezy's and have close to a full size run of them because your store is not a regular Finishline or Footlocker with retailer contracts.
