CINCINNATI (AP) — An armed man who believed he was confronting an intruder in the basement of his home Tuesday morning instead fatally shot his 14-year-old son, who was supposed to be on his way to school, police said.

Police said the teen had headed to the bus stop but apparently came back home through a back door. The man said he heard a noise in the basement. Police said when the father opened a door within the basement, the boy appeared.

"He scared me!" the distraught father said in his 911 call shortly before 6:30 a.m. "I thought he was in school. I heard noise, so I went downstairs looking and he jumped out at me. .... Oh, God. Get here quick!"

The man told police he accidentally shot his son with a .45-caliber handgun. After initially telling the 911 dispatcher the boy was hit in the chest, he then said it was in the neck. The dispatcher told him to put the gun on the kitchen counter, then talked him through first aid steps and tried to calm him until police and emergency vehicles arrived.

The boy died at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Police identified him as Georta Mack. They didn't immediately release the name of the father, who's heard in the tape repeatedly shouting, "Oh, God, please hurry! Oh, God!"

Police officials said the Hamilton County prosecutor's office will decide whether there should be any charges against the father.

"These types of tragedies are so horrific, they're even unimaginable," Police Chief Eliot Isaac told reporters.

A police officer at the scene told reporters that the boy had apparently decided he wasn't going to school and returned home through the back door.

Cincinnati has made reducing gun violence a top priority for 2016. Isaac said the shooting Tuesday underscored some important messages.

He said those who have guns in their homes should get training and make sure the weapons are kept secured.

Referring to indications the boy had planned to skip school, Isaac said children should "tell the truth: make sure your parents know where you are, absolutely."

Sad case. But if his son was there seem like he would have said Dad it is me. Very strange that he would just pop out at him as he said. They did not show the dad or any other family member. I have never been in a situation like that.

If the father didn't own a gun, then his son would be alive.

If the father did own a gun and it was an intruder, then he would have protected himself.

So I don't know what point I am trying to make.

Or maybe the dad should have yelled " who's there!?? Who the fuck in my house!!" , instead of sneaking around with a gun, getting startled and shooting blindly like a scared bitch.

This shit ain't remotely on the kid.

Didn't expect to see a black baby when I clicked this. Very sad.

One of the first rules before you fire a weapon is to know what your shooting at. That's important when hunting and especially at home. Buying the gun was not a mistake, the father not using good judgement is the problem.

Cover the door to downstairs..yell you have a gun and calling police..that's what I would have done.

You might not know what point you are trying to make but I tell you that don't have a gun is out of the question. In Rwanda in 100 days around one million unarmed men women and children were killed. Even babies. It was a great show if mind control. They experimented with this in Jonestown. And they have made 3 different movies about Rwanda. None of the movies spoke of the priest and nuns did some of the killing. But right here in America they are planning another Rwanda. We have seen whites rejoice and reward people for killing unarmed blacks. And NRA and Obama friends are working on how to finish some things up here. That was why I felt somebody else should have made the movie CHI-RAQ. They seem like they have lost their minds. Nobody is trying to get some of that money Larry Silverstein, Bush, Cheney, blackwater, etc. are making off of the destruction of people. Their criminal empire is getting stronger and more dangerous. Instead of the blacks in Chicago disarming they show know who they are going to need protection from

Father who killed teen son after mistaking him for an intruder will not be charged

An Ohio father who police said shot and killed his 14-year-old son when he mistook him for an intruder will not be charged in the incident, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The 72-year-old man, who has not been named, told authorities he thought his son had gone to school Tuesday morning when he heard a noise in the basement at his Cincinnati home. He said he grabbed his gun and went to check it out.

The man said he opened a closet door and his son shouted “boo,” according to the prosecutor. He got spooked, he said, and shot his son — striking him in the neck.

“I just shot my son by accident,” he told a 911 operator, according to CNN affiliate WCPO. “He scared me. I thought he was in school. I heard noise and then I went downstairs looking. He jumped out at me. I shot him.”

“Oh God,” the father said in the audio obtained by the news station. “Why didn’t you go to school?”

The teen was transported to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where he died, police said.
