They don't do east and west anymore

They do do east/west for the purpose of deciding who makes it and who doesn't (12 from the east and 12 from the west).

If the alternates are selected the same way, Kyrie being moved to the Western Conference starters would open a spot for someone in the East.

And they chose teams right before the game...

If Durant plays I guarantee they put him and Kyrie on the same team... Lol

As I mentioned previously, the makeup of Team LeBron and Team Giannis are picked by the captains, but who they get to choose from is determined by who was selected as an All Star. That All Star selection was still done by conference with 12 from the East and 12 from the West.
