Obama says 'institutional constraints' kept him from commenting on killings of Black Americans

Former President Obama said that "institutional constraints" prevented him from speaking out about the killings of Black Americans during his time in the White House.

Obama's foundation, My Brother's Keeper Alliance, on Wednesday hosted a forum during which the former president participated in a panel discussion on the activism sparked by last year's police killing of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man.

Obama noted that there were several high-profile killings of Black Americans - including Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and Alton Sterling - during his time in office but said he didn't want to interfere with the Justice Department's investigations into the cases.

did not in any way want to endanger their capacity to go in, investigate and potentially charge perpetrators, which meant that I could not come down or appear to come down decisively in terms of guilt or innocence," Obama said.

The former president added that he didn't have the majorities needed to make a significant push for social justice.

"Keep in mind, in 2012, I won. But I didn't win congressmen, and we didn't win a bunch of governorships back. We didn't win a bunch of state legislators back," Obama said "And so, all the reform initiatives that we were coming up with and the ideas that had been generated, we weren't able to translate into as bold a set of initiatives as I would have wanted."

The forum came after the one-year anniversary of the death of Floyd, who was murdered by then Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

Floyd's family on Tuesday was in Washington, D.C., pleading with lawmakers to pass the police reform act named for him.

Floyd's death, among others, led to nationwide protests over social justice and police reform.

Thank you for not speaking up
Justice was definitely served for those murders thanks to your restraint in speaking and influencing those tragedies

I'm not team Obama hate
He did a lot he was a great president he's halfway decent as a person

He missed the mark with being vocal in supporting black Americans

Things just didn't sit right with me

Not actually speaking up but also the whole drug push for relief when horse hit white folks is when I became disgruntled.

If anyone knows how much drugs effect and tear apart a community it's a community organizer from Chicago but had no money for that then found billions to keep d money out of Delaware

My question is what was the president going to do? He can't influence juries. He can't try the cases. That shit ends up being local. I think that for the most part, when we have one of those instances where the local DA needs to look into the PD, it should be taken over by federal prosecutors. The problem is that the shit is happening so much, you would almost need a whole division or department. Maybe they can take some of that Space Force money.

He could have been a more vocal advocate....pretty much what he's saying he should have done. Obama factored in white grievance too much. He understood it but he should have often just said "fuck it" and said it anyway. However, he probably factored it in so much because he wouldn't have been president without ceding to it (Pastor Jeremiah Wright shit)

Wouldn't have done much though.. Remember how whites lost their shit when he said "Trayvon could have been my son"?

I always felt it was a risky road(to a degree) especially when you and your family have protection around the clock

But when you touch on other subjects, this language don’t add up

Now that he has started to explain his sins, perhaps he will now tell
us why he did and said nothing about the black Africans put in cages
in Libya and sold into slavery, following a war he started.

He did speak on the killings of Tamir Rice and Trayvon Martin, even going so far as to publicly say that that Trayvon could have been his son. He did speak on the killing of Michael Brown and Alton Sterling. I would just like to know what more his detractors believe he could have done in addition to referring all three to the Justice Department for investigation. People forget in these cases a President is constrained by states jurisdictional authority and able to do only so much, and a black President facing a backlash from whites thinking he's pro black and blacks thinking he's not black enough even more so.

People react simplistically to complex situations and become angry when what they feel should happen doesn't and instead put a face to their disappointment and in this case blame Obama with no regard for the real machinations at play . :hmm:

If anything Trump proved all of this to be some shit that ain't true lol.

A president can do what they want when they're in office
Especially one who's secured his 2nd term.
And especially on his way out of his 2nd term.
That's like last week of college with your cap, gown, stole, and tickets printed and you got an A on all of your finals already.

That's one of my biggest gripes
caring more about what white people think than what we actually going through
And we can say he did because he didn't say fuck it.

He's just idk.

They lost their minds the same way when he wore a tan suit

so in my opinion if they gonna lose their minds no matter what might as well make it worth it.

They treated him like nigga scum his entire tenure. In years 7 and 8 he should have given them a reason to.

He will always be my favorite POTUS of all time for several reasons including the obvious ones.. But i find myself liking him less and less as time goes on.

He should just shut the fuck up right?
I think it's the guilt of knowing but then playing the game but then seeing trump do what he wanted for 4 years and realizing he had that power and didn't use it and will never be able to have that again.

He's looking at all of ways he could have done stuff or wanted to do stuff but listened to advisors and didn't
It's a look in the mirror he needs to just frame it as i fucked up not doing this and then we'd say yea you did but at least you know it.

Yeah, okay... Like I said, some people have simplistic views and unrealistic solutions for every problem. I'd just ask you to rethink your comment that "A president can do what they want when they're in office; especially one who's secured his 2nd term". Nixon thought so too and had to resign even after winning re-election in a landside. :hmm:

Trump did whatever he wanted so the argument is moot
and nixon resigned over something called watergate
stop simplifying shit because youre a fanboy

Why??? Because he didn't advocate killing whitey at every opportunity. I suggest you google Obama administration accomplishments and perhaps you "liking him less and less" will result in you liking him "more and more:.
