I need one of these. I think I've had enough with firestick. If they go on sale again I'll grab one.

damn...shoulda copped an extra one when seen it for $130 yesterday

I have a Shield and my Roku Ultra is way better. You have to format your external hard drive so the Shield will see it then your computer won't be able to use it. The Shield is missing a lot of streaming apps while the Roku gets all the apps first.. The Roku remote will control your TV so you only need one remote. My Shield is collecting dust and the Roku Ultra was on sale for half the sale price of the Shield.

The Roku is trash. What exactly can't you run on Nvidia Shield? I haven't run into any app it couldn't yet. And how is formatting a drive to extend the space a bad thing? And why can't you're Nvidia be seen by your computer or vice versa? I see mine. Stream from my computer and can pull things from my Nvidia as well.

What's the big deal over the fire tv that makes it worth the extra $100?

User Interface is not filled with Amazon shit

More powerful CPU
-Amazon, Quad-core (x2 2.0Ghz, x2 1.6Ghz)
-NVidia, Octo-core (x4 2.0Ghz, x4 1.5Ghz)

More RAM, 2Gb VS 3Gb

More powerful GPU
-Amazon, 256 cores @ 400Mhz
-NVidia, 256 cores @ 1000Mhz

They both support 4k HDR video and 7.1 audio output

Where the NVidia really shines is as a gaming system. The extra power allows it to run emulators from Atari to PS2, Dreamcast, and Game Cube. NVidia also has a Netflix-like service where you can play about 200 games (games list here), it is free for now. Also if you have a gaming PC with a supported NVidia graphics card, you can stream games from your PC to your Shield.

They don't have the Direct TV Now or Xfinity Streaming apps. Formatting is not extending space. The Shield is an Android device. I can't drop a movie on my USB drive from my laptop and pop it in my Shield. The drive has to be formatted by the Shield and Windows can't use an Android formatted drive.

Doesn't sound like it's worth....

A hundred dollars

NVidia you can sideload apps like Mobdro and HD Cinema as well as use Kodi, Roku can't.

Roku can't touch NVidia for gaming, between emulators and GeForce Now.

I turned on CEC on my TV, Shield and Audio Reciver and my shield remote control the power of all 3 and the audio, which is all I need it to do.

Install Ext2Fsd on your Windows PC and you can read the external drive from Nvidia Shield. Shield should also be able to read external drives formatted as FAT32, NTFS, ExFat and HFS+.

Kodi is the service that has temporary stream stations right?
Nice plug for "read from" the USB but no write since writing on ext2/3 within Windows has always been experimental.

This discussion sounds like the Head-fis saying Beats Headphones is "trash, you're paying too much for trash",
then they talk about how you need a $1200 pair of cans for your home setup. Oh no home setup? Then you should
also buy the $300 DAC amplifier so the $1200 cans sound as good as the Beats from your smartphone.

Evaluate and see if what you want + need is covered, and I bet Roku would do that for most folks.

An Ubuntu VM takes 20 minutes to setup and you can pass the USB drive to it and read and write to it. Also it can read NTFS and exFAT drives. You can add 1 USB drive to adopt and use for app storage then use another non-adopted USB drive to transfer files.

Also as I have mentioned, one of the main reasons for using an Nvidia Shield is gaming, if you don't game, by all means get a Roku or FireTV, but for those of us that do, those systems cannot touch the Shields capabilities.

I’ve been pushing the Nvidia Shield for years here and cats STILL have questions about it lolz.

Almost want to grab another. I've been working with the same Shield TV since 2015 and it’s still working like a champ.

Probably the best gadget I bought in the last few years.

Dude, I'm a Senior System Administrator. There's not shit as far as tech that 99% of peeps on here can tell me. I know all the tricks. I need my set up to be family friendly. Kodi is too unstable for wifee to be fucking with. I'm only fucking with HD and 4K content. Side loading apps is a hack. The Shield is not fucking with my PS4's for gaming. I have a Pandora 5S with 1200 plus emulated games. I need my streaming player to work with all major apps out the box. Xfinity, PlayStation Vue, Netflicks, Direct TV Now, and Amazon Prime. To stream 4K content with out buffering. The Shield is not worth it in my opinion. I'm just saying.

Sorry bruh, but this isn't true at all. I took my external drive straight from my PC and my Shield recognized it and all of the videos with no problem and no formatting at all. I also go back and forth between my PC and my Shield all the time with zero issues. I've done this with external drives and SD cards through adapters.

The Shield was the only device I could find that could play 4k rips with the HDR and Atmos/DTS-X intact.

Also, my A/V receiver's remote controls the Shield so I don't need the Shield's remote.

Bro, I know what I'm talking about.

  1. Removable Storage: This is how you’re probably used to USB drives working with your computers and other devices. When mounted this way, the content on the drive is available to use for both Plex and other apps, but you cannot install Android apps on the drive.
  2. Internal Storage: This option allows you to basically replace the internal storage and instead use the attached USB drive for installing apps. Choosing this option will format the drive and you will lose any existing data on it! At that point, the drive can only be used with the NVIDIA SHIELD and will not be usable with other devices unless you format it again.

Maybe putting apps on it complicates things (I haven't done that) but as far as dropping a movie on a USB drive and popping it in your shield, I've done that plenty of times. Using two drives could be an option, one for apps and one for movies, but if the Roku does both on one drive I can see the appeal.

no......you dont.

its actually pathetic whats considered ‘tech savvy’ nowadays.

makes it too easy for people like you to come in with a bullhorn to spew what little you do know as fact and people believe it not knowing any better.

you splitting up Android and Windows as if files cant be recognized betweem the two says everything about what you so called know.

are you getting Android mixed up with Apple?

Shield is better than Roku as it should be since it costs quite a bit more....that being said, Roku is never trash Boss

shield is the best one of these devices i've ever owned... i finally can get rid of my WD box

im a WDTV convert too, thats how i got into the Shield

Shield is better than Roku as it should be since it costs quite a bit more....that being said, Roku is never trash Boss

maybe not trash but nowhere near what people pump it up to be

none of those usb stick streamers are doing anything special, the Roku, Firestick, or Chromecast

then the bloatware that comes on all 3

Only if you game on it. But if you already have a PS4 or Xbox One for gaming and looking for streaming Roku is the best for that. It has way more apps.

no nigga.

PC gaming exists.

people that want to stream their PC games to their TV exist

its why the Shield was created

The Shield is missing a lot of streaming apps while the Roku gets all the apps first.

apps first? huh?

oh dont stop there....tell them how often apps get removed from the Roku for proprietary reasons

Kodi is too unstable for wifee to be fucking with.

then dont use Kodi....use VLC, or any of the hundred other media players available

Not true. I've done it multiple times with different thumbsticks and drives.
