Not all flies that lay eggs eat only dead flesh. That is why hospitals that use the 'debridement' treatment have to use specific flies whose maggots will only eat dead flesh. If you are unlucky enough to be expose to other ones their maggots will eat live flesh.

Just google "Bot fly" and see how much these things love living flesh.
The duct tape was to smother the larvae so that it would come up to the surface (to breath) for removal. Folks use vaseline too, or even raw meat so it burrows up into the steak and them can be removed with the meat.
