YOU were the one who brought up Opal Lee. So I was the one who quoted what she has said and even linked to an article as proof of her saying it.
Right now she plans to savor the moment. But the woman who spent years fighting for Juneteenth stresses the work that's left to do to push back against racism.
"We've got all of these disparities that we've got to address and I mean all of them. While we've got some momentum I hope we can get some of it done. We can have one America if we try," she told KTVT.

YOU have yet to acknowledge what she says here even though YOU were the one who brought her up.

I brought her up becuz supersav tagged me here....then essentially blamed me for the holiday becuz I voted for Biden....kingtar's worried that it will get co-opted and pissed no one is talking about reparations...soul is complaining in other threads about it.

So its clear no one is happy about it being made a holiday and no movement on anything else... and so the finger pointing starts...

All I did was present the person who spearheaded the Juneteenth movement.... you want someone to blame for this getting prioritized over police reform or reparations etc.... Ms Opal Lee is the person to look at. She voted for Biden...She voted for the democratic majority..Juneteenth was her baby.

If you're NOT going to blame her then DON'T complain about it at all..

thats all I'm saying..

You voted for Biden and you have stressed the importance of having a democratic majority. I won't be mad at Mrs opal as a distraction from the people who make policy. I know you don't wanna hold them accountable but using an old lady is low for you
They are afraid of the Neanderthal man in general but they worship the one in blue while hating the one in red all because the blue one (the creators of the White power structure) has them tricked.

Trump has done more for so-called blacks than Biden by default because Biden has done nothing yet you have people like @mangobob79 /@rainbowbob find pride in saying “that’s my President!” about Biden. Shit is pathetic that people are still tricked by this two party system.

So a 94 year-old Black ADOS woman should be blamed for a lack of policy as it pertains to Black Americans………..rather than the actual president and legislators who make policy?!?!

Ask supersav why he tagged me into this thread in the first place?? The problem is people who support biden and dems remember?? well SHE'S one of them...

And what did she put her energy into?

Ms. Opal Lee is on the move. The 94-year-old activist from Fort Worth, Texas, who is oft-referred to as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” has already begun her annual Walk to D.C., as part of her efforts to see the momentous day recognized as a federal holiday.

Lee has been on a mission to change those stats since 2016, when she launched Opal’s Walk 2 D.C. at the end of President Barack Obama’s second term in office. For more than 40 years, she had carried on the tradition, working with the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation and leading local Juneteenth events. But that year she was particularly inspired, coming up with a plan to walk the 1,400 miles from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., to petition the Obama administration and Congress to grant the holiday an official position on the calendar.

“I just remember thinking, ‘Gee, I’m 89 years old and I think that there’s lots more that needs to be done,’” Lee tells Variety, looking back on the first time she laced up her sneakers to march. “I gathered some people at my church — my pastor, the church musicians, a county commissioner, a school board member; not acres of people, but a few — and we had a little ceremony. I walked from the church, two and a half miles, went home, and the next day I started where I left off.”

From September 2016 to January 2017, Lee traveled the country, marching the symbolic two-and-a-half-mile stretch in cities that invited her to take part in their Juneteenth festivities. “I went to Shreveport and Texarkana, Little Rock and Fort Smith, Denver and Colorado Springs,” she recounts. “I went to Madison, Wis., Milwaukee, Atlanta, the Carolinas. I was all over the place.”

Imagine if she had put that much energy into police reform an black anti-hate crime bill??

Tell Ms. Opal about the tokenism and empty symbolic gestures...
The point that we are making is that dummies, such as yourself, will no doubt use this holiday in place of substantive legislation.
You morons will point to this, as you did with that failed farm bill, when we ask the govt "what have you done for Black people descended from enslaved people"? This is what yall gonna pull out your ass. Watch.

I think what people are saying is that..we aren't satisfied..we should be happy that is a holiday..it's being recognized finally..but we're so pissed over being fucked time and time again that it ain't enough..this shit like a slap in the face..what about what we really need in this country..black people always at the bottom..give us more opportunity as the other races..give us justice..land..reparations..laws that protects us..equal rights..we've been doomed since we laid foot over here..give us what you owe..I'm on one right now..one last thing..a poster earlier said other groups are going to merge their shit with ours..that's beyond ducked and it hurts..I'm not that political but sometimes I see things..I'm done...

I hear everything you saying.

Its not my place to tell you how to feel, Im just here asking questions, trying to understand.

Peeps who are online trying drive narratives gotta get their story straight though. The truth is that for YEARS Ive heard from ADOS that Juneteenth should be a national holiday.

Now that its a reality, people online are saying they never asked for it and insulting people over it. Why? I understand if peeps wanna keep the pressure on politicians, but they really wanna blast other black peeps over it?

All Im trying to say is Im happy this has happened, I think we should all agree its a good thing and I dont care who gets credit for it.

Tweet Ms Lee and ask her if Juneteenth isn't substantive legislation...you can do that in the social media era.. :hmm:

See this is what I'm talking about.... you're trying to have it both ways...on the one hand, the holiday is bullshit and meaningless on the other hand you don't want to say that Ms. Lee wasted her time when there are more important things she could have used that energy for.

So stop being a coward and evasive and own your shit...just say a Juneteenth federal holiday is not substantive legislation and Ms. Lee wasted her time and was used. If you're unwilling to say that then it does count as substantive legit legislation.

pick a side. :rolleyes2:

You expect a 94 year-old woman to accomplish something that mass-marketed Millenial organizations like BLM have yet to accomplish? And, as she has articulated (in the quote I keep posting but you stay ignoring because it destroys your silly-ass argument about her), she regards her work as a means to an end

Ultimately the Dems didn’t come through on the issue of Juneteenth because of her. They came through because of the protests and riots last year, and they see this as a band-aid rather than providing substantive legislation and policy. The very kind of policy that the old woman you keep trying to throw under the bus is talking about in the quote you keep ignoring:

We've got all of these disparities that we've got to address and I mean all of them. While we've got some momentum I hope we can get some of it done.”

You’re asking questions that have been answered multiple times in this thread!!!! Three substantive answers are below - all expressing the same basic sentiment.

There's nothing wrong with it being a holiday. The problem is it doesn't address the issue that caused it, it's symbolic. Add on the commercialization that comes with it, sales, people who ain't ADOS selling merch, people monetizing events, etc. There is a Juneteenth "parade" this weekend in Atlanta that is basically a Caribbean Carnival. They are having mas and wearing Caribbean flags, literally nothing to do with our ancestors or the event. A lot of ads aren't using the Juneteenth flag or colors but pan African shit. :smh: This isn't a Pan African event, it's a Black American one, that is disrespectful. LGBT community is already merging they shit into Juneteenth and co opting events into some gays were oppressed like slaves bullshit and Twitter uses a rainbow gay emoji for it. That is disrespectful. America has a history of taking our gains and giving them to everybody (immigrants, gays, whites, etc) to erase our justice claim.

I do blame the civil rights generation cause instead of fighting for integration they should be been fighting for reparations and land. Cause they were so in love with whites they couldn't resist.
