This Month’s Highlights
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

The Coen Brothers’ first project made for a streaming platform, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is an anthology film that follows six stories set in the Old West. Given how much fun the Coen Brothers have with period films and their eclectic style, an anthology Western sounds like the perfect fit for their streaming debut. Then again, it could also be a mess! Regardless, it will, at the very least, be worth checking out. Available November 16.

The Other Side of the Wind
For the final stretch of his life and career, Orson Welles struggled to get his most ambitious film across the finish line. While most of the project was filmed, only about half of it was edited, and the rest remained incomplete at the time of Welles’s death. The incomplete film became Hollywood legend, as various attempts at completing it were made. But in 2018, it’s finally here, on Netflix, assembled by a passionate postproduction team dedicated to Welles’s vision of a man trying to make one last daring film. (It’s very meta.) If all that intrigues you, also check out They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead, a documentary about the making of The Other Side of the Wind that also comes out on the same day. Available November 2.

John Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons
John Leguizamo’s latest one-man show is one for the books — a funny, heartfelt, and angry special where the actor and comedian takes audiences on a whirlwind tour of Latin history and his frustration over barely knowing any of it. Building the show around his desire to help his son with a school project where he has to research Latin heroes from history, Leguizamo launches into abbreviated portrayals of a number of Latin historical figures, and the ways they’ve largely been excluded from historical accounts. Funny, informative, and raw, Latin History for Morons is a fantastic work from an underappreciated talent. Available November 5.

JUST WATCHED THIS SHIT, TWICE!

Everybody talking about Bird Box but this was some damn fine film work right here. I loved it from start to finish and I went from laughing to thinking hard about life by time this flick was over.

Going to check it out soon. Trying to get caught up on some movies these next few weeks. Looking forward to True Detective on HBO in January too!

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Yeah fam. I watched the beginning and the shoot outs were on some too fancy comedic shit but then I seen Clancy Brown and I kept it on. Shit got deep in the middle, a little cruel in some stories, funny in others but the end was deep. There’s some other worldly shit happening under the story too. No spoilers. It’s a patient tale but well worth it. The film is beautiful to look at mainly because this is the first time them Coens ain’t use film. And it still works.
