Music Legal: Black Sheep Suing UMG for $750 Million Over Unpaid Royalties

I have love for dot but he’s wrong for putting it out there like it wasn’t on puff

He’s right that he didn’t gangster them out of it. He signed them as a subsidiary of his publishing then shorted them on the payouts

At 2:07 he then says puff tried him with the publishing but he turned it down

^^^^

I agree but the thing is at so many levels there is culpability

Back then the preyed on young naive and desperate kids. So it's the parents and lawyers and managers who at fault.

But those kids gonna hate the parents for saying no. Remember on drink Champs Jada dad didn't let him sign the first contract but in the end its still a bad contract.

Same for the lawyers / managers as horrible as some are if the CLIENT says they want to sign?

Got no choice.

Puff and those before him got the same contracts usually worse.

Everybody didn't have Freddie Foxxx out here to audit contracts and break faces.

Ideally yes EVER BLACK LABEL head should have been obligated to do right by their artist, period. But in a society that supports capitalism no matter how much its destroying them? I don't see that :happening frequently

Totally agree

Even dot said his two kings and a cypher deal was trash

Puff also got his artists by having them use the bad boy lawyers to do their contracts

the distribution deals were used to control artist's contract terms with labels

and just like the artist in need of money
under funded label "owners" were guided into bad distribution deals which lead to them giving out contracts that could never be financially fulfilled and hustling advances /budgets to pay themselves

other than Master P and Easy E - there were no black label heads of that era

Rus had to comply with requirements of the distribution deal that funded DJ until he got kicked out by Lyor
LaFace Bad Boy etc all inked artist deals that had to comply with the terms of their distribution deals with Arista
Uptown Biv10 etc with MCA
then Jheryl Busby at MCA and later Motown was an exec that answered to a board and CEO of a parent company
(shout outs to Hov!)

Even with funding from Harry O -Suge still was under Interscope's distribution terms - because of advances
Dre - wash and repeat
Baby- wash and repeat with Universal

most of these guys didn't understand the gate keeping control in effect until they were trapped by illusion or money
others were in the "got to get mine" mindset

there is a plantation model in the entertainment industry - the music side just happens to have mostly members of a semitic community living in the master bedroom
with select house niggas (of various races) fighting to be allowed to live in the big house or overseers' quarters
yall covered most of the issues. but i agree with dik cash
the problem like vic said they were acting like bosses
but they were just the figure head. fat joe acted like he owned TS
then remy ma album got fucked and he had to tell truth that it was sony
he had no say. thats how the whole beef started.

the reason why i agree with dik cash is they were using the family angle
so they were doing dirty business acting like these artist were fam
the same with rocafella records
but these artists where not just young they were in the streets
if u just seen a shootout yeah u would sign every thing
i mean 50 cent was working for puff got his shit taking
and was shot year or two later
they prey on the hungry

i disagree with dot just like i shot ya record
biggie might recorded it earlier but they
knew what they was doing releasing it

What's fucked up is black people can't get paid off of their talents without including white people.

Black people have to go through white record companies with white record company executives in order to get their art to the world when the white people that are including don't have the talent that they have but somehow are able to profit off of the Black Talent.

And they say we're supposed to put ourselves up by our bootstraps but they own the boot straps and even if we are wearing boots we had to buy it from their store

And then record companies owned by black people like Motown and bad boy, their owners Berry Gordy and Sean Combs did black artists as bad if not worse than the white labels would do their artists.

How much would Earth Wind & Fire be worth if they were able to solely profit off of their work? How much would New Edition be worth if they were able to solely profit off of their talent? And the New Edition story where they got ripped off is widely known

Who makes Bkacks hire white or jewish lawyers?

Dres should’ve just sued on his own behalf
Those who have big hearts usually get screwed the most. The record industry is shady as fuck. I wonder what would have happened had I actually utilized the connection I made.

I got backstage and sang for Eric Benet and he gave me his manager's number and I was going through a breakup and didn't call. I wonder...

He did and had any of the artists he was trying to help would’ve added their name to the suit it would’ve made a difference
this u are right i think he should have did it himself
he should have asked around first maybe it was also a money thing
