Frankenstein

PRAISE: The story of Frankenstein has evolved a lot over the years. Sometimes in film, animation and comic books. Some film interpretations of Mary Shelleys novel i feel have been overdone, but not this film. I knew i was in for an entertaining and haunting time when I couldn't stop smiling during the first five minutes of the film. The cast does an excellent and then some job in their portrayals Oscar Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein,Jacob Elordi as The Creature,Mia Goth as Elizabeth Lavenza / Caroline Beaufort,Christoph Waltz as Harlander,Felix Kammerer as William Frankenstein and David Bradley as Blind Man. Victor even with success there are frustrations coupled with impatience. Elisabeth, her fascination, compassion and bravery was beautifully brought out. The Creature what Elordi does with his movements, then like a child discovering things for the first time and realizing what life and death are. I liked how Victor and Elisabeths relationship evolved in the movie. Even with the smallest of objects Director Guillermo Del Toro took his time to make it all look interesting and haunting. The design of towering castles, bodies and his animating of the inanimate was incredible. I liked how he filmed certain scenes so characters could stand out in a crowd. There is this feeling of compassion for The Creature that flows throughout the movie and its coupled with well he didn't ask to be "born'. There were times when I said oh i know what part is coming next but Del Toro makes a good portion of the legendary story his own that it all felt new again. There is plenty of gore and blood and sound effects that are definitely not for the faint of heart. There are a number of great action sequences but one was so well done I actually felt dizzy. Some scenes were filmed so well they actually looked like paintings. I was actually going to pause the film at the halfway mark but got so caught up in had to finish it.
PROBLEMS: There was one kind of hokey moment that I wish had a better flow to it it felt like a jarring pause to the action and momentum of the movie. I started to feel the length of the movie when it entered it's last thirty minutes.
Scale of 1 to 10 a 9
Definitely one of the best movies of 2025
