 :yes:I would say this was the best movie I saw this past weekend. I enjoyed this movie from beginning too end. And the end credits. I hope they keep Ryan Reynolds and the dead pool character around for awhile. Other than that I would recommend this movie.

Agreed. It's cool to see him completely redeem himself in the superhero / action movie space too. After the major disaster which was Green Lantern in 2010, he scores international smash hits in 2016 & 2018 with two Deadpool movies. Well played. Both movies well promoted too - he was fully invested in the projects.

Watched Nobody, Fauve, and the first half of Hostiles in recent days.

Really enjoyed Nobody. They kept it quick & with minimal filler at 1 hour, 30 mins. The soundtrack / score was great. Great fight / action sequences. Silly, over the top fun. Ultra violent.

Fauve is a short film and was recommended by a family member. Pretty good. Less than 20 minutes. Wouldn't have minded if it was actually a full length feature film. Have more build-up and back story. It was good all the same. I added the Youtube links below - you can watch it in full, if interested. Family member had recommended it after DVR'ing it previously.

Hostiles is from a few years back. Pretty intense. Strong cast in it.

Hostiles is a 2017 American revisionist Western film written and directed by Scott Cooper, based on a story by Donald E. Stewart. It stars Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, Wes Studi, Ben Foster, Stephen Lang, Jesse Plemons, Rory Cochrane, Adam Beach, Q'orianka Kilcher, and Jonathan Majors. It follows a U.S. Army cavalry officer who must escort a Cheyenne war chief and his family back to their home in Montana in 1892.

The film had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2017, and had a limited release in the United States by Entertainment Studios beginning December 22, 2017, before going wide on January 26, 2018. It received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed $35 million worldwide.

Fauve is a Canadian short drama film, directed by Jérémy Comte and released in 2018.[1] The film centres on two boys (Félix Grenier and Alexandre Perreault) looking for adventure near an open pit mine, who are soon drawn into a dangerous situation as their power game spins out of control.[1]

The film was shot near Thetford Mines, Quebec.[2]

Also watched The Father the other day. Excellent performance from Anthony Hopkins, as expected. Does he ever miss?

It hit home as a few friends of the family are currently going through dementia & Alzheimers battles. Plus, great aunt and grandpa (both late) had their battles with dementia near the end of their lives.

The Father is a 2020 drama film co-written and directed by Florian Zeller, in his directorial debut, based on his 2012 play Le Père. A French-British co-production, the film stars Anthony Hopkins, Olivia Colman, Mark Gatiss, Imogen Poots, Rufus Sewell, and Olivia Williams, and follows an aging man who must deal with his progressing memory loss.

The Father had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on 27 January 2020, and will be released in the United Kingdom on 11 June 2021 by Lionsgate. The film was acclaimed by critics, who lauded the performances of Hopkins and Colman, as well as its portrayal of dementia. The film earned six nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Hopkins), and Best Supporting Actress (Colman). At the 78th Golden Globe Awards, the film received four nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, and at the 74th British Academy Film Awards received six nominations, winning Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for Hopkins. In addition, Hopkins and Colman were nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress at the 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards.

I know this show has been off the air for a few years, but it has to be said. It's on Hulu if anyone who missed it during its first run wants a chance to see it or for those who want to watch it again

Justified is about a u.s. marshal going back to his hometown Harlan Kentucky. It's some of the best writing you'll see on television, it stars Timothy Olyphant Walton Goggins and the deliciously beautiful Erica Tazel ( what's best about this role is that she is not stereotypical in any way and I love that about her , and she is naturally beautiful and dark skin like I like them)

Mortal Kombat

Mortal & Mediocre

PRAISE: If you ever loved video games like Mortal Kombat and Pit Fighter like I did you will find things to like and cheer about in this 2021 film version of the game.
The story : Hunted by the fearsome warrior Sub-Zero, MMA fighter Cole Young finds sanctuary at the temple of Lord Raiden. Training with experienced fighters Liu Kang, Kung Lao and the rogue mercenary Kano, Cole prepares to stand with Earth's greatest champions to take on the enemies from Outworld in a high-stakes battle for the universe.

I got a lot of laughs out of this one especially from Josh Lawson as Kano from beginning to end his character was entertaining .Some truly funny and salty one liners are coupled with the fight sequences.
Other actors do their best to represent the popular characters in the game.
I admire their commitment to the choreography in the fight scenes.
There are plenty of good kills that are not for the faint of heart and tons of fan service. The sets and SFX were pretty good.
Honorable Mention to Sisi Stringer as Mileena you gave it to them nice and nasty !!

PROBLEMS: Nothing about the plot really grabbed me. The animated Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge actually had a more involving plot .There is a cheesiness that envelopes the movie and it comes through via the acting especially when actors try to deliver lines with urgency but sound like they are reading their lines off a teleprompter.
It's funny how it's stated over and over again how characters have to reach a level of Chi or whatever to get their full powers but it seemed pretty simple to attain by just doing something simple.
With the characters that keep popping up throughout the movie I was actually shocked they left some out.

Go ahead and make the jump. It has the most witty dialogue you'll ever see on television

Thanks. Yeah - years back Showcase (in Canada) would pick up the occasional HBO and Showtime stuff.

Not so much FX Network - until the station was more readily available in cable / digital packages.

If I recall correctly, CTV carried The Sopranos, and Chek 6 had The Shield as far as those HBO & FX hits went. Showcase had Six Feet Under and more.

Thankful to have all the streaming sites these days, FX in the bundle, and Crave On Demand (which carries the back catalogues for HBO & Showtime, as well as a little bit of the newer Showtime stuff).

PRAISE : Joe Penna's & Ryan Morrison's story of
A three-person crew on a mission to Mars that faces an impossible choice when an unplanned passenger jeopardizes the lives of everyone on board has it's thrilling and suspenseful moments and is well acted by the entire cast including : Anna Kendrick
Daniel Dae Kim,Shamier Anderson and Toni Collette.Filmed in a way that was so involving that i actually said hey watch your head to the characters a few times.
The theme of sacrifice coupled with psychological drama worked here and there in the movie.

PROBLEMS : Predictable from it's first dwelling frames. In order for me to get into the film i had to believe that something unbelievable would be explained and unfortunately the explanation was beyond weak and just opened up a plot hole. Then something occurs that ends up being far to convenient especially when i thought about something that happened earlier in the movie. This all leads to another plot hole and an ending that didnt move me but just jarred by how abrupt it was.
I wonder if the writers were trying to take a poke at Aerospace companies like SpaceX.

Been on a 30s/40s film kick these last few months.
Something I used to do when we had only 6-12 TV channels way back when.
YouTube has a variety of channels that show a ton of this stuff.
This was a GREAT one.
It has Claude Rains and a pre-KING KONG Fay Wray.

It was ok, it was a basic and easy to understand story.

Some of the CGI was totally unnecessary and they should have kept it simple. I guess it was done for jump scares, but it didn't work. At least for me.

Is this a remake of the 1988 flick?
PG-13 horror is usually a turn-off for me.

PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN

BROKEN PROMISES

PRAISE: Another nice surprise in this story of a woman named Cassie who has a chance to right the wrongs from the past.
The cast including : Carey Mulligan,Bo Burnham,Alison Brie,Clancy Brown,Jennifer Coolidge,Laverne Cox and Connie Britton do a great job
Mulligan is the stand out .She gives an unflinching sometimes heart breaking performance. The writing by Emerald Fennell coupled with her performance is near perfection.
I was drawn in and felt as if i was walking along with the character through her joy and disappointment's.
I wondered throughout if something would come along that would divert her from her path that she was laser focused on i actually kind of hoped something would and i feel that actually added to the strength of the film.
Taking on such a tough subject as rape but being able to add dark humor without being offensive is an admireable feat.
I loved what was done with the visuals and captions. When a film ends and you actually piece together and discuss what drove the character and why the made certain decisions you know you've watched something impressionable.

PROBLEMS : There are a couple of things that occur that i fully couldnt get on board with.
A couple of characters should have been developed more.I feel they could have fleshed out the story more even if a couple of flash backs with the characters would have happened it would have helped in my opinion.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

Checked it out yesterday. Agree with your review, JBlaze. Some flashback scenes to further develop the story & some characters would have helped. I liked how they split it up into acts / chapters. The music was good throughout, especially the variation of Britney Spears' "Toxic" in the final 30 mins or so. That was a great song selection with the alternative instrumental version. I liked how the story was pieced together and wrapped up at the end, and the twist did catch me off-guard with how quickly things changed.

The version of the song they used in the movie -

Did you guys feel it was academy award worthy? @joneblaze

I felt that this one was shaky and the product of a Covid year. The rest I can see, but this was cool, but not great.

It was a hard watch for me because of the subject matter and the ending.

Agreed. Very tough subject matter. Good point about it being the product of a covid year. Everything was smaller scale production-wise. Winners like this one, Nomadland, The Father, etc. Not a year for blockbusters or major movie events.

Mulligan's always great.

The ending caught me off-guard. Intense the day after.

Felt it was deserving of the Best Original Screenplay win(s). In another year, don't think it would have been up alongside the other Best Picture nominations.

Promising Young Woman had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 25, 2020, and was theatrically released in the United States on December 25, 2020, by Focus Features. It received positive reviews from critics, with praise directed at its screenplay, direction, and Mulligan's performance. The film earned five nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress (Mulligan), and won for Best Original Screenplay.[6] It also received four nominations at the 78th Golden Globe Awards and six at the 74th British Academy Film Awards, where it won Best Original Screenplay.

Watched 47 Meters Down yesterday. Had already seen the 47 Meters Down Uncaged movie a year or more back.

Both movies could have used more shark scenes. Thankfully the sharks were NOT CGI'd to hell and back in the first 47 Meters Down. Both movies needed some actual T&A though - better babes in the Uncaged movie.

Mandy Moore is too conservative too. Hiding her curves, lol.

Nice callback twist at the end of 47 Meters Down. Can't recall what happened at the end of Uncaged - it wasn't too memorable in 2019 or 2020.

If either movie appeals to you, watch The Shallows as well. Saw that one back then too.

Checked out portions of this documentary. Pretty good. Lots of film clips & interview segments with film nerd fans of the genre. Jotted down a few movie titles they referenced in it ...

Survival of the Film Freaks is a documentary exploring the phenomenon of cult film and how it survives in the 21st Century. The documentary traces decades of film fanaticism up to the present, where the ‘digital age’ has transformed the way we experience movies. Part-love letter to, part-exploration of cult fandom, Film Freaks features interviews with genre favorites Ted Raimi and Joe Bob Briggs, up-and-coming filmmakers Jackson Stewart and Kurando Mitsutake, and many more.

WITHOUT REMORSE

REMORSE ON REPEAT

PRAISE : Michael B Jordan provides plenty of presence and raw emotion in Tom Clancy's Without Remorse a story about an elite Navy SEAL Seeking justice for the murder of his pregnant wife, who uncovers a covert plot that threatens to engulf the United States and Russia in an all-out war.
Jordan gets good support from his co stars including Jamie Bell,Jodie Turner-Smith,
Guy Pearce and Lauren London.Director Stefano Sollima puts together some great action sequences and visuals.Even providing a scene thats quite haunting.Slight touches from writer help uplift the script for the film here and there.

PROBLEMS : I could see the difficulty the movie has getting past it's repetitive, one note and been there done that rhythm. Then add some predictable turns and i felt the film runs out of steam once it reaches it's last 20 minutes and it felt like something was missing and definitely more should have happen once the truth came out.

APE vs MONSTER

Monster Mess

PRAISE: This flick provides some great unintentional laughs. Hilarious how some of the characters were beyond uncaring about others. I stuck it out because I was waiting for a certain character to bite the dust in a big way

PROBLEMS: ULTRA bad acting coupled with terrible CGI and a plot that made no sense.Sure have a conversation in Russian with no subtitles.
Eric Robert's looks like they woke him up from a bad bender to film his scenes.
The script was structured in such a way that the crappy CGI wouldn't have to be used that much.
I could question tons of things that happen and don't happen in this flick but I know the answers to the questions are LOW BUDGET !!
