AMERICAN SKIN

Is it a gun, is it a knife
Is it a wallet, this is your life
It ain't no secret (it ain't no secret)
No secret my friend
You can get killed just for living in your American skin

Bruce Springsteen

PRAISE : Before watching this film i asked my family to watch the trailer first because i knew some of the imagery and subject matter may be triggering for them.
Director, writer and star Nate Parker doesnt pull any pumches in this story of a war veteran seeks justice when police kill his unarmed son during a routine traffic stop.and im happy to see more of his work.
Powerful and heart wrenching performances from : Parker,Omari Hardwick,Theo Rossi, Shane Paul McGhie,
Milauna Jackson and Beau Knapp are coupled with a script laced with truth.
Parker constructs the film in a way that every voice is heard .From policeman, people from all walks of life, and those that are relentlessly harassed and judged just because of the color of their skin. This is true involving and visceral film making.
Some of the themes may be old hat and i have seen them in dozens of TV shows and films, but this struck an emotional chord in various new ways.

PROBLEMS : I thought the involvement of certain characters being placed in peril was a bit off.
Im conflicted when it comes to the ending of this film.Part of it i hated and part of it had it's truths about people being oblivious and making assumptions that become facts just because the person is on TV and has become a trusted source for information.

Another powerful work from Nate Parker .I hope to see more from him in the future.

Locked Down

Pandemic Pairing

PRAISE : This film is us !! Our reality of stat at home, stay safe, having Covid and not having it,Zoom calls and wearing masks.Finding out a lot more about the the job's of family members as we over hear their conference calls.Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor are great as Paxton and Linda are a disgruntled married couple living in London amid the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. The banter between them is great as they talk about their lives and revelations about the past and present are put on the table.
The story is fun as we go through their ups and downs and i loved the celebrity cameos. Some of the story actually gave me a nice flashback of when i worked in retail.
High praise to Director Doug Liman and writer Steven Knight for being able to shape a story around all of the Covid confusion.

PROBLEMS: The film starts to run out of steam during it's last 30 minutes. Not as much fun as the first 90 minutes and a story thread i thought would be a lot of fun just dragged and was far to convenient.

PIECES OF A WOMAN

Raw emotion and then some

PRAISE: Kata Wéber's Pieces of a Woman is a story of a heartbreaking home birth leaves a woman grappling with the profound emotional fallout, isolated from her partner and family by a chasm of grief.
This was a gripping and involving experience. If you ever suffered a loss similar to the characters of the film you may want to be very cautious about viewing it.
The performances by the entire cast are spot on Vanessa Kirby,Shia LaBeouf,Molly Parker,Sarah Snook,
Iliza Shlesinger, Benny Safdie,Jimmie Fails and last and by no means least Ellen Burstyn.
All of the blame, guilt ,acting out and trying to heal from a loss is on full display. There are scenes that are so powerful with imagery so stunning you cant deny the strengths of Director Kornél Mundruczó.
There will be plenty of awards and nominations for this film.

PROBLEMS : A couple of times i felt the film was to dwelling. There is a tacked on drawn out scene that i thought wasnt necessary.

Still with it's flaws it's one of the best movies of the year.

OUTSIDE THE WIRE

Training Day with a cyborg

PRAISE: Im not even going to beat around the bush i had a lot of fun watching this movie. The story that takes place in the near future,of a drone pilot sent into a war zone finds himself paired up with a top-secret android officer on a mission to stop a nuclear attack was pretty good.
The pairing of Anthony Mackie and Damson Idris really worked for me.Idris as Lt. Thomas Harp, a drone pilot who isnt ready for the perilous and beyond dangerous mission hits all the right beats.
Mackie is definitely channeling Alonzo Harris from 2001's Training Day and having a great time doing it with his salty talk and scolding manner.
The action sequences were good and intense. I would say about 75% of the story worked for me.

PROBLEMS: There was a hollow feel to some parts of the story.Suspension of disbelief was asked of me several times.Another Netflix villain that doesnt measure up.
The last 20 minutes was very predictable.

It's not going to win any awards but it's a fun action romp.

It was ok, as in watchable on a Sunday afternoon during the summer. Stereotypical and not believable. Honest Thief was better. It will be a Netflix top ten someday, but it was a forgettable movie.

I wanted to like it, and I liked parts of it, but it could have been a lot of better. Some of it was so cliche. It was like they went to a message board and used the exact discussion for dialogue. It seems very cut and paste besides the non-believable events that are taking place around the discussion.

I guess it was a discussion piece, and it was done two years ago. Seems like Nate wanted each "side" to understand the other side in a digestible way. I wonder if it would have been different now after this summer.

The ending probably has people divided, but I felt that way after wasting an hour and a half of my time.

WHITE TIGER

UNCAGED TIGER !!

PRAISE : It's always a good thing when a film catches you of guard.Based on Aravind Adiga's 2008 novel White Tiger is the story of An ambitious Indian driver uses his wit and cunning to escape from poverty and rise to the top.
What really struck a cord in me and what the film really brings out so well is how so much is denied from people just because of their social status.Even the simple things in life like an education or going on the internet. This is what shapes the main character and made me care about him. He questions the aforementioned .Should you be ambitious or just dwell in whats handed to you and pre arranged for you in life?
The film has dark humor here and there which i enjoyed but I must admit the film was jarring for me when it took several dark turns.

The entire cast does a great job including : Adarsh Gourav,Rajkummar Rao & Priyanka Chopra
Of course Gourav is the standout as he accepts a life of servitude but slowly deters from this acceptance as several events play out in his life the raw emotion he expresses leaps off the screen.
I loved how some characters were presented as caring and encouraging but when push came to shove all of that vanished. It actually made me think of Richard Wright's Native Son.

PROBLEMS: At times the film suggests severe consequences if certain actions are taken but are casually written off as the film progresses towards its ending. Which lead to a few far to convenient moments.

THE POINT MEN

HUNTERS & KILLERS !!

PRAISE: Extremely fast paced an entertaining flick about A group of agents from Israeli intelligence agency Mossad make a mess of an attempt to kill a Palestinian terrorist.
Loved the pacing in this quick flick. The film is laced with good kills and quick action sequences. If you're a Christopher Lambert fan it's a must see.

PROBLEMS: Some bad dubbing. Some situations and acting in the film is beyond bad and cheesy.

I never knew the caste system was so bad in India. White Tiger was an eye-opening movie about Indian culture.

The Highwaymen;

Based upon a true story on the two Texas Rangers who captured Bonnie and Clyde
Detectives played by Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson.
Movie focuses more on the two detectives but it also tells the story how Bonnie and Clyde eluded law enforcement for years.
Decent amount of action and you will see how ruthless Bonnie and Clyde really were.
Movie also contains stills of the real Bonnie and Clyde.
I'd give it an 8 out of 10

Enjoyed it too. Checked it out previously, and it's been fun seeing Costner's work in recent years. This movie, the Let Him Go movie, 3 seasons of Yellowstone. Good actor.

I probably liked it more than other people

It was just weird, because it was a big name movie with academy award winners but didn't seem like it. You could have had anyone in the roles really, the acting just wouldn't have been as good. But you would have less expectations.

I heard this sat on the shelf for 20 years so that's why it's based in the 90's, and it fits along with some of the movies in the 90's like Seven and Bone Collector. However the "killer" in this seemed secondary, and it was more of a cop bonding and seeing the before and after affects.

Leto was the most interesting thing by the way he sold the creepiness, but was so secondary...dude literally prepped for possibly being caught...and you never got to know why

So far WB is 0-2 for their movies going to HBO. It's good for HBO Max, but a lot of people probably would have been disappointed just like Wonder Woman if it was in theaters only

Saw Palmer on Friday. Well-acted. Movie would have definitely worked better had they shown more back story with the troubled mother, and less hammering home of the "princess" angle with the kid.

Lone wolf and Cub: Baby cart at The river Styx HBO Max

This is part 2 to the Shogun Assassin Series. After the HBO MAX conversion last month. I started to scroll threw all the movies they had and I stumbled across this series. Ive heard the series before, but hesitated to buying the series as its listing price on amazon is a whopping $215(dvd) and $115(bluray). Ive held out for years to avoid paying all that money. To finish watching that series of movies. And now it paid off.

As soon as the movie started. I found myself jumping back and saying DAMN alot  This movie is great, the action/sword fighting is non stop. In like the first 30 minutes. It slows down a bit, but picks right back up. There is 6 movies in total. Of this story, and HBO MAX has all of them. This is the order that they are in

Lone Wolf and cub: Sword of vengeance
Lone wolf and cub: Baby cart at The River Styx
Lone Wolf and cub :Baby cart to Hades
Lone wolf and cub: Baby cart in Peril
Lone wolf and cub: Baby cart in The land of Demons
Lone wolf and cub: White Heaven in Hell

The American titles were renamed different, But its basically Shogun Assassin 1-5. Also parts 3-5 subtitles were renamed something else. For example Shogun assassin 3:Slashing Blades of carnage, Shogun assassin 4:Five fistful of gold, Shogun assassin 5:Cold road to Hell. Part 1 of the American version of Shogun assassin. Was blended with All of part 1. And mostly of part 2.

Im going to check out the rest of the series throughout the week. But I would recommend this movie and series. If your not into body parts flying all over the place. You may want to steer clear of this series.

The Little Things

NO SPOILERS NO SPOILERS

A little BORING

PRAISE: This is definitely one of those films in which the cast uplifts the stiffness and dwelling script. The cast including Denzel Washington,Rami Malek and Jared Leto do a fine job in this film about Deputy Sheriff Joe "Deke" Deacon who joins forces with Sgt. Jim Baxter to search for a serial killer who's terrorizing Los Angeles.
The story drew me in with interesting turns and characters.I was especially curious about Deke portrayed by Washington his hesitation and ties to certain characters and a serial killer case held my interest. Albert Sparma portrayed by Leto was so strange and creepy he was actually amusing. There was a haunting feel that surrounded the film which I liked.
There was great tension between certain characters that evolves over the course of the film.

PROBLEMS: The pacing really tested my patience. I think if I had not had an ice cold drink in my hand I would have fallen asleep.
Something occurs with a couple of characters towards the end of the film that was an absolute head scratcher and I couldn't believe one of the characters was allowing it to happen to himself.
I was dissatisfied with the conclusion because the film had been building towards something great or at least had the potential of doing so only to end up with a basic answer to everything.

Someone said on Twitter that this would have worked better as a few episodes Of True Detective and i agree

I agree. This one was slow and the ending had a surprise but it was still underwhelming. A 7 is accurate, if not a 6.5. But the writers and director wasted the talent

It was ok. :dunno: I was wondering did they think this would be a money maker, because there's nothing intriguing about it besides Tom Hanks being in it. It's predictable and it seemed like there were no stakes, because you knew nothing was going to happen to them.

Tom Hanks is going through a dry spell, because Greyhound was mediocre also.

Watched this movie yesterday after reading some of the reviews at The UG (Flanery was also in the thread as he's a member of their forum, and thanked the viewers). He (Flanery) has a background in BJJ, so there's a good amount more technique in key sequences in this one than other mma-themed films. It focuses on the early days of competition (early-90s to early-00s). I liked how they pieced the story together, and the choice for narrator. If you have a chance to watch it, take a look at the end credits & the shoutouts and respect shown.

Born a Champion is a 2021 American martial arts drama directed by Alex Ranarivelo and written by Sean Patrick Flanery and Ranarivelo. It stars Flanery, Dennis Quaid and Katrina Bowden. The film also features mixed martial arts fighter Edson Barboza, with appearances by Renzo Gracie and Mickey Gall.[1][2]

The film received a limited release in select theaters in the United States on January 22, 2021 and became available via video on demand the same day.[7] It was released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 26, 2021.[8][9]

Flanery is also a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which he teaches.[15] He placed first in the Master 1/ Blue/ Male/ Light division at the 2003 American National IBJJF Jiu-jitsu Championship[16] and the 2003 Pan Jiu-jitsu IBJJF Championship[17] by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation. Flanery indicated in an interview that, at one point, he considered competing in mixed martial arts, saying "If it didn’t come around so late in my life, that would’ve 100 percent been my trajectory." Yeah - watch it for the technique in a few of the scenes. You'll get a laugh when they reference some of the old-school message boards and forums too (Sherdog and The UG). The star of the movie is an active member on The UG, so he was shouting out their community.

Back in the day when people would tape-trade stuff on VHS (90s - early-00s), or watch clips on random blogs or forums.

Prior to Kazaa, Bearshare, etc.

That's a great series. I definitely need to go back and watch it On Demand. I have the 1st season on dvd, but I only caught bits and pieces of the whole series when it aired on TV (as they would air some of the HBO and Showtime stuff on Showcase in Canada). I'd say I caught about 50 - 60% of it in total. On a funny side note, Romany Malco was married to a friend of mine's sister ... believe they broke up a handful of years back.

In 2008, he married former ice skater Taryn Dakha, the body double for Jessica Alba. They met in 2007 on the set of the 2008 film The Love Guru.
