Talks are in the very early stages — it’s not quite clear if there’s an offer on the table — but overtures are there.
The new Spider-Man movie is targeting former Batman actor Michael Keaton to play the villain in Marvel/Sony’s reboot of the web-crawling hero, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Talks are in the very early stages — it’s not quite clear if there’s an offer on the table — but overtures are there.

Titled Spider-Man: Homecoming, the film is set to begin shooting this summer and will launch a third incarnation of one of Marvel’s most popular superheroes.

Tom Holland will star as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and is making his debut as the character in Captain America: Civil War (and already garnering praise for his take on the role).

Marisa Tomei will play Aunt May, while Zendaya is one of the female leads in the pic that will be directed by Jon Watts.

It is unclear what character Keaton would play in the story that is said to take Spider-Man to his high school roots.

The actor is famous for inhabiting the cowl of Batman, starring as Bruce Wayne in Tim Burton’s two classic comic book movies, Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992).

Keaton, who is repped by ICM Partners, was nominated for an Oscar for his work in 2014's Birdman, in which he played a former superhero actor seeking to redeem his post-comic book franchise career.

Even though he’s only been seen in brief previews, it feels good to have Spider-Man back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and woven back into studio head Kevin Feige’s masterplan. The next phase of Spider-Man will attempt to make fans forget about the Amazing Spider-Man franchise as they welcome Spidey back into the MCU. Feige has already suggested that some familiar faces from the MCU might pop in for a visit with everyone’s favorite wall crawler. The Spider-Man reboot has also been confirmed to be a a joint effort between Marvel and Sony and will not be yet another rehash of the Peter Parker origin story.

What we know already: Tom Holland is set to slide into Parker’s web-slingers, with Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei playing Aunt May, and Zendaya playing a “significant role,(some rumors suggest Felicia Hardy/Black Cat). But one key question still remains: Which Marvel archenemy (or archenemies) is set to antagonize Spidey?

According to Birth.Movies.Deaths sources at CinemaCon, the upcoming film will feature the fearsome wings of the Vulture. The source also reportedly reiterated the official title – Spider-Man: Homecoming – which may be officially revealed during Sony’s slate update later today. At this point, though, the source wasn’t sure to the extent of the Vulture’s role in the film. He may be the primary foe, a supplemental villain, or merely have a bit part.

They definitely need to stay away from the green goblin villain again. It's a lot ways they can go.

Yeah they've done the Goblin enough. There's enough of rogues in the Spider-Man comics to choose from.

Eventually,me and you know they're doing the Hobgoblin again,I guess they're doing the other villains first, since folks are sick of seeing the Hobgoblin.

I'm cool with Norman Osborne being around but yes skip him being a Goblin for a while. Just make him the powerful villain he became behind the scenes. Want him in the Iron Patriot armor to redeem that storyou eventually.

Well this is interesting. Last month, word surfaced that Oscar-nominee Michael Keaton was being eyed to join the cast of Marvel Studios and Sony’s highly anticipated reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming, potentially as the villain. Then, a few weeks later, talks between Keaton and the studios stalled out and it looked as though the pairing wasn’t meant to be. Marvel and Sony then met with a former True Detective star (Woody Harrelson?), but now THR reports that not only have talks with Keaton begun again, but Keaton is in final negotiations to join the redo.

Tom Holland leads the picture as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and is joined by Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, but we also now know that Robert Downey Jr. will be a part of the cast as Tony Stark continues to forge his relationship with Parker that began inCaptain America: Civil War.

But how does Keaton fit into all of this? Early word was that the main villain of the film would be Vulture, an electronics engineer who crafts a flight harness that gives him superhuman strength. The folks over at JoBlo are now reporting that yes, Vulture will be the main villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but he won’t be the only baddie. According to their sources, he’ll be aided in his villainous efforts by The Tinkerer, who helps Vulture build his suit. And what materials does one use to craft a Vulture-inspired flying suit of armor? Per JoBlo, in a savvy piece of MCU connective tissue, Vulture’s suit will be constructed from recovered Chitauri technology from the Battle of New York in The Avengers.

If this report pans out, that’s an incredibly smart way to incorporate this new Spider-Man movie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially since the events of the film take place in New York City post-Avengers. Moreover, JoBlo adds that Stark will offer even more modifications to Spider-Man’s suit, supplying the classic Web Wings from the comics that open up and allow Spidey to glide—a necessity in an aerial battle with The Vulture.

So it looks as though all the pieces are falling into place, and after the unanimously positive reception Holland got for his brief turn as Spidey in Civil War, this is shaping up to be one hell of an exciting Spider-Man movie. Jon Watts (Cop Car) is directing from a script by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Horrible Bosses), and production is aiming to begin in June. Zendaya and Tony Revolori are also set as part of the ensemble, but expect more casting news soon.

Agree no more Goblin. But goddamn Marvel be grabbing primo talent while DC gives us...Henry Cavil? You already know with Shellhead in it people are curious. And people LOVE Spidey. And this dude Holland, based on CW, had the nerdy geek with a steel spine thing spot on. Looks like another Marvel TKO.

And look here man, Marisa Tomei caught me totally off guard. white chick is still sexy AF.
