HOUSTON - Family, friends, neighbors, and many others are mourning the death of Carroll Oliver, a well-loved businessman with strong ties to Harris and Fort Bend counties.

"We mourn with his family," says neighbor Chip Sanches. "We're hoping that we can do something to help them get through this."

Oliver, 68, was gunned down in the parking lot of one of the McDonald's restaurants he owned, at the location in east Houston at the East Freeway and Lockwood Drive. He was walking to his vehicle when he was approached by at least two gunmen in a white SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Tahoe, as he was leaving Monday morning to deposit money.

"They tried to take the money satchel from him," said Detective P. Waters with the Houston Police Department. "They were unable to do that. Oliver was armed, he drew his weapon in self-defense."

In addition to the numerous McDonald's restaurants he owned Oliver was the chaplain for the Fort Bend County Precinct 2 Constable's Office. His neighbors say he'll be sorely missed.

"Solid rock of the earth kind of guy and to hear about this," says neighbor Chip Sanches. "I'm sure devastating for his family but very disturbing for all of us in the neighborhood."

In the parking lot where he was murdered, loved ones and employees held a moment of silence to mark Oliver's passing. People who knew and admired him now are asking for peace and justice.

"We hope that incidents like this will simply show people that we have to respect life and we cannot, cannot let things like this go unresponded to," Sanches says.

Investigators believe Monday's robbery may have been an inside job by either a current or former employee.

Witnesses reported seeing at least two suspects. One of them is described as black, about 6 feet tall and weighing around 200 pounds. He was wearing black pants, a black jacket with white writing or striping on the front and back side.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

Rest in peace brother

Damn. I guess he tried to draw on them. Sometimes, it's best to just give it up.
Yeah. He should have had someone with him regdardless, cause if I'm reading correct he was 68 yrs olds and more than likely had a decent amount of cash on him being it was from a McDonalds. Sad shame.

It's terrible that some people perceive the money you have to be more valuable than actual life. Yours as well as their own. If their caught that's 3 lives lost over pennies.

Fucked up if true. Even worse it was done by a brother.

Mr. Oliver should have gave up that money, though. It just wasn't worth. You can make that money back.

Could have lived to take more precautious measures. Losing people like this from our communities really sets us back because this was a money-maker and employer.

Fuck...

Rest in peace...

The same thing would have happened to that guy who left his daughter at the park

I was thinking the same thing and she would have most likely been killed as well.

It's funny how often the victims are blamed , they should have done this or they should have done that.

It's about black ownership and not letting those other people come in and own

It's the system that makes people prey on others

Dam, soon as I read that it was on Lockwood in 5th ward area I knew it was a robbery. You gotta keep your head on a swivel if you own a business out there. Yeah, it would have been best for him to have an armored truck services to do pick ups.
