Why Ant-Man Is Going To Play A Huge Role In Avengers 2

What's in a name? It's a question we often hear asked, and more often hear answered. In the case of a Marvel Studios film, a name is a lot of things. It's a promise of a very specific adventure that sets the tone and tells us who to expect to see on the big screen for the years to come. A title like The Avengers: Age Of Ultron promises all of that and then some in its title -- and once it dropped, there was one important link to Marvel comic history that fans assumed would fall into the "then some" category: the introduction of Ant-Man, and the creator of Ultron himself, Hank Pym.

Unfortunately for some, this was denied by Age Of Ultron writer/director Joss Whedon from the beginning, as he stated that he was, "...crafting [his] own version of it where [Ultron's] origin comes more directly from the Avengers we already know about." So of course, who's the first Avenger everyone turns to when it comes to technological advances gone wrong? Everyone's assumptions naturally turned to Tony Stark's technical know how as being the "new" catalyst for Ultron's rise to power. However, judging by the new synopsis for The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, there's a possibility that the origins of the latest menace to The Avengers might be a little closer to the comics than we thought.

As you'll recall, the synopsis for The Avengers: Age Of Ultron has the following nugget in its opening.

"When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance.

It sounds like Tony Stark isn't going to create Ultron, so much as dust him off from the archives and create him anew in his own image. This right here could mean two separate possibilities for The Avengers: Age Of Ultron: it means that not only do we have a possible origin story for The Vision, we also have a possible tie to Ant-Man that could minorly tweak the origins of Ultron, but not so much as to say that Tony Stark created him on his own. If Whedon's previous statement is correct, and this Ant-Man casting scoop is any indication, Hank Pym and Howard Stark may have created Ultron together.

With John Slattery in Ant-Man, and a casting call for a young Michael Douglas lookalike probably being fulfillled as we speak, it's not hard to connect the dots and assume that flashbacks will be a part of Ant-Man's origin story. Of course, considering the film quite possibly might be set in 2008, before or during the events of The Incredible Hulk, the whole film might amount to a flashback in the grand scheme of things.

There are more knowns than unknowns when it comes to Ant-Man, and The Avengers: Age Of Ultron is just warming up when it comes to telling the public what it's all about. We'll find out a lot more about both films in the months to come, but with all of the information available to us right now, this seems to be the most entertaining theory as to how the comic origins of Ultron will be only be a slight departure from what happens in the films.

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron will be released on May 1, 2015; with Ant-Man following its lead on July 17, 2015.

Ant-Man Might Have More Villains Than We Thought

ant_man_67265.jpg

How many villains will Ant-Man face in the Marvel movie named after the tiny hero? It’s a question we’re wrestling with after a suspicious Instagram by co-star Evangeline Lilly… an Instagram post that she since has taken down.

Lilly, who plays Hope Van Dyne in the upcoming Marvel origin story, shared an image on her Instagram of her with co-stars T.I. and David Dastmalchian (The Dark Knight), but tagged it with what we believe is a major hint. She wrote (according to ComicBook.com, who grabbed the imagery):

*#!$ing around #onset today with #TheCrims.@troubleman31 @dastmalchian #Antman #Marvel #MarvelComics"

OK, so what does she mean by #TheCrims? We automatically assume she means "The Criminals," suggesting that T.I. and Dastmalchian are playing bad guys in Peyton Reed’s superhero adventure. Dastmalchian, in particular, has an evil complexion that was put to good use in Christopher Nolan’s Batman movie. And at the moment, neither one of them have confirmed who they are playing in Ant-Man. Did Lilly tip the director’s hand with this image?

_1411005609.jpg

Probably, because the post is not on Evangeline Lilly’s Instagram page anymore, meaning Marvel might have asked her to take it down. Too late, though. We all saw it, and now we want to know what it means.

From what we knew prior to this morning, the main villain in Ant-Man was going to be played by Corey Stoll, who was confirmed to play Yellow Jacket. That’s a more traditional Marvel villain, an equally powerful super villain who can match wits (and tiny strength) with Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang. But calling the co-stars #TheCrims suggests a few possibilities. We know that Rudd’s character is a thief at the start of the movie, and that he will try to break into the lab of Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym, eventually stealing his Ant-Man technology. Could these be his criminal cohorts? And will they have larger roles?

There have been supporting characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that started small but eventually grew (no Ant-Man pun, intended). I’m thinking of Agent Coulson. Then again, there have been villains, like Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns, who almost became integral, but fizzled out. Where will T.I. and David Dastmalchian fall? We’ll find out when Ant-Man opens in theaters on July 17, 2015.

The Latest on ‘Ant-Man': More Villains and Possible ‘Avengers’ Ties?

ant-man-movie-image-paul-rudd-640x426.jpg

Though Marvel’s Ant-Man has officially gone into production, fans haven’t heard much news about the flick other than a brief synopsis. But this week, viewers seemingly got a new hint about the flick straight from one of the stars.

Per ComicBook.com, Evangeline Lilly, who plays Hope Van Dyne in the studio’s much-discussed superhero flick, recently gave fans a hint at the plot by sharing a photo on Instagram of herself with previously announced co-stars T.I. and David Dastmalchian. “*#!$ing around #onset today with #TheCrims.@troubleman31 @dastmalchian #Antman #Marvel #MarvelComics,” she wrote alongside the snapshot.

Lilly has since taken the picture down, but not before several sites got a hold of it. Now, fans are speculating whether “#TheCrims” actually means “The Criminals” and if the actress was implying that there will be more villains than we may have expected in the upcoming film.

Previous to her posting, it was already understood that actor Corey Stoll would play Yellow Jacket, the main (and equally small) villain to Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang. Unlike that of their co-stars, though, T.I. and David Dastmalchian’s roles in the films were still unknown.

But Lilly’s posting implies that they’ll also be playing bad guys of some kind. Another potential theory is that they will play criminals, but not evil ones — perhaps Lang’s fellow thieves who help the protagonist steal.

Of course, so far, these rumors are purely speculative. Still, the fact that Lilly felt compelled to take down the post seems to signify that it gave something important (like the nature of those particular co-star’s roles) away.

Adam McKay Talks Adding Action Sequences to ‘Ant-Man’ With Paul Rudd

The new “Ant-Man” is now “a little bigger, a little more aggressive” thanks to Adam McKay and Paul Rudd.

McKay talked to Collider about the new “Ant-Man” screenplay, which he teamed up with star Rudd to rewrite after director and co-writer (along with Joe Cornish) Edgar Wright abruptly left the project due to creative differences with Marvel. McKay ultimately decided against stepping in as director, leaving that chair for Peyton Reed to fill, but did sign on as co-screenwriter.

According to McKay, he and Rudd, who he directed in “Anchorman” and its sequel, “holed up in hotel rooms” and “did a giant rewrite of the script” in six to eight weeks.

“We just shaped the whole thing,” McKay told Collider. “We just tried to streamline it, make it cleaner, make it a little bigger, a little more aggressive, make it funnier in places.”

McKay also said the duo added new action sequences, which amount to half of the film’s total beats.

“We added some new action beats,” he said. “I grew up on Marvel Comics so the geek in me was in heaven that I got to add a giant action sequence to the movie. I was so excited. So we did; we added some cool new action. There’s a lot that’s already in there from what Edgar did, there’s a lot of dialogue and character still in there.”

The Marvel pic also stars Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Corey Stoll. It storms into theaters on July 17.

Ant-Man Will Be The Most Important Movie In The Marvel Cinematic Universe, Here's Why

ant_man_68112.jpg

When Edgar Wright left the Ant-Man project earlier this summer, the alleged straw that broke the camel's back was a surprise re-write that fixed two problems Marvel had with the last draft that Wright and co-writer Joe Cornish had turned in. Those two "problems" were that the film's "core morality" as well as "franchise characters" not getting enough love by the current standards of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For those of us who wanted to see Edgar Wright's unfettered, unaltered Ant-Man, we'll probably never get the chance to even the now fabled draft. So what does that leave us with?

Well, details have been slowly leaking out, sketching out the film's possible and confirmed trajectories in plot and character development. It sounds like the morality of the picture might be "improved," and the representation of pre-existing Marvel Cinematic Universe characters has been more than fortified. In fact, everything that's out there right now, both rumor and fact, has us thinking that Ant-Man is going to be the most important Marvel Studios picture in the entire MCU, connecting not only to the present and future of the entire operation at hand; but also filling in some essential blanks in the past.

_1415393823.jpg

Past: The Founding Avenger
In the comic history of The Avengers, Hank Pym's Ant-Man was one of the first members of the team, and judging by the 2012 film introduction to Earth's mightiest heroes, you wouldn't know it. However, Marvel seems to be correcting this error with some fancy retcon work in Ant-Man. In addition to Hank Pym being named one of the "founding" Avengers, he also looks like he'll be interacting with two favorites of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Peggy Carter and Howard Stark.

While we've seen Peggy and Howard during the 1940's, the 50's onward are a bit of a haze. Agent Carter will fill in the gaps that come after Captain America: The First Avenger, ending at some assumed point in the 1960's - 1970's, at the very least 1974. Why '74? Because that's when the Stark Expo hosted by Howard Stark, takes place, and since John Slattery is back in the saddle as Howard Stark, this all makes sense. While "The Avengers Initiative" may not have been deployed until 2012, its beginnings are clearly linked to the formation of the SSR and S.H.I.E.L.D. So don't be surprised if young Hank Pym shows up alongside young Anton Vanko in Howard Stark's lab on Agent Carter.

_1415393830.jpg

Present: The Irredeemable Thief
Another part of Ant-Man's story is rumored to take place in the relative present, theoretically around Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This portion focuses on "crooked father"/master thief Scott Lang – who looks like he's going to steal the Ant-Man suit in the new footage we discussed the other day.

However, looking at the version of Ant-Man Marvel trademarked as late as last December, it looks like the project will be riffing off of the "Irredeemable Ant-Man" variant of the character. If this is true, then the theft of the suit might tie Ant-Man directly to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as the theft takes place during a Helicarrier crash. Should this hold true, Scott Lang is stealing the Ant-Man suit while Steve Rogers and his team are fighting HYRDA, providing a direct link into Phase 2.

_1415393870.jpg

Future: The Heroes The Worlds Needs
So how does Ant-Man tie into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? This is where the fun comes in, as we'll only truly know once we've seen The Avengers: Age Of Ultron. However, that very film is changing the Avengers team, as it will drop and add new characters by the end of the film. As if that's not bad enough, Civil War is brewing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, threatening to plunge the entire canon into chaos, pitting Avenger against Avenger.

Which is the best time to deploy a film like Ant-Man, the film that actually closes out Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That's right, instead of the seemingly traditional Avengers cap off, we're getting a film that might show us how The Avengers were created. Better still, the heroism in Ant-Man, between Hank Pym and Scott Lang, will show us just why we need The Avengers. Because while our heroes might be a danger to each other as they debate policy through fisticuffs, there's a greater danger looming in the wings (see the picture above)

First Photo Of Marvel Ant-Man's Villain, Yellowjacket, Leaks

We have been treated to a fair amount of Ant-Man goodies this week, from the first-look footage that was part of Marvel’s ABC special to an updated plot synopsis that suggested two clever twists. This one might be the best one yet, though. A possible look at the Ant-Man villain has landed online via social media. Check him out below.

<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Marvel?src=hash">#Marvel</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/MCU?src=hash">#MCU</a> <a href="http://t.co/A6j4RkXdTP">pic.twitter.com/A6j4RkXdTP</a></p>&mdash; MoviesBook (@MoviesBookIT) <a href="https://twitter.com/MoviesBookIT/status/530059478646161408">November 5, 2014</a></blockquote>

The Twitter feed for @MoviesBook posted this grainy image of what they are claiming is Corey Stoll in Ant-Man as the expected villain, Yellowjacket. And if this is really him, it’s freaking awesome. I love the mechanical look to his suit, the spider-esque metallic legs that are springing from his backpack, and the helmet that does mirror the costume that we expect Paul Rudd to wear in the Marvel standalone movie – which was shown in the concept art for Ant-Man

Naturally, this costume would be an update on Yellowjacket’s look in the Marvel comics, which resembled this:

_1415389017.jpg

But all of the Marvel characters have undergone upgrades during their transition from comic-book page to silver screen. Anthony Mackie’s Falcon didn’t have those great, military-weapons-grade wings in the 1970s comics, as you know.

Corey Stoll was confirmed to be playing Yellowjacket during the Marvel Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con. His alter ego will be Darren Cross, though it’s unclear in what ways he will tie into Ant-Man’s legacy. In stories past, Cross has been a rival of Stark Industries, and there have been rumors that Cross (Stoll) will come in possession of the Ant-Man technologies, forcing Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) to hire Scott Lang (Rudd) to steal it back.

All of this is a mystery for now. But this could turn out to be the latest bit of Marvel wizardry to be spoiled by an Internet leak. Maybe this means the studio will drop an official still of Yellowyacket over the weekend?

Marvel reveals plot details for Ant-Man movie

ant-man-640x960.jpg

Marvel's upcoming Ant-Man wrapped shooting last week, and now the studio has finally released the official plot details for the film.

The film will feature Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, the diminutive hero of the piece who keeps peak human strength despite shrinking down to microscopic sizes and can command hordes of insects. Michael Douglas appears as Hank Pym, Lang's mentor and creator of the Ant-Man technology, with Evangeline Lilly as Hope van Dyne, love interest and presumed relation of The Wasp.

The studio's synopsis reads: "The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios' Ant-Man. Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world."

The hyper-nerd in us would like to point out that while Ant-Man was indeed a founding Avenger in the comics, it was the Hank Pym version of the character. Scott Lang later joined the Avengers and the Fantastic Four at different points, but was the second man to wear the mask. (Nerd-out over; we're sorry.)

The troubled production—being over eight years in development and having lost its original director—is Marvel Studios' riskiest movie yet. Admittedly, people were saying that about Guardians of the Galaxy, which went on to gross over three-quarters of a billion dollars at the global box office, but the danger there was the lack of familiarity the public had with the characters. With Ant-Man, there's that same barrier, plus the rather public and messy background to the film.

Peyton Reed stepped in as director six months ago, and after Rudd himself helped rewrite parts of the script, production was accelerated. There's still merit in the character and concept, though, and with the final film to be released worldwide on July 17, 2015, the first wave of trailers will hopefully win back small-minded (sorry) audiences.

especially in light of current events I don't see Marvel EVER doing this version...

but if they had a REALLY good writer and actor and director it would be the most challenging adult dramatic comic movie ever.

The five most important things we might have learned from Ant-Man's very tiny teaser

http://www.theverge.com/tldr/2015/1/2/7482511/stills-ant-man-teaser

Marvel blessed us with a teaser for the Ant-Man teaser earlier today, the upcoming superhero flick starring everybody's favorite "guy next-door" Paul Rudd. While it was a coy attempt to tantalize without giving away much detail, the studio execs obviously don't watch enough police procedurals and therefore forgot about our ability to zoom-and-enhance. What we're left with is a surprising amount of casting reveals and cameos that show the studio's unraveling faith in the star power of Rudd.

1.0.png

Paul Rudd will certainly be in this movie, which we already knew. But what we didn't know was that he would appear next to Ranger Smith from the Yogi Bear cartoons. That seems like a confusing creative choice by Marvel until you realize that Ant-Man was created the same year that Yogi Bear ended its run in 1962.

2.0.png

This body of water will appear, if only for a few frames. Is it a lake? Is it a bay? Is it an estuary? And will it buck the trendy saltwater that makes up 95-percent of the Earth's H20 for a more rejuvenating freshwater composition?

6.0.png

Don't let this messy batch of pixels fool you, this still appears to confirm that Roron Corobb — the Ithorian Jedi Master from Star Wars: Clone Wars — is going to make an appearance in Ant-Man. What else could that blue cylinder be but the plasma of a lightsaber? Disney also owns the Star Wars trademarks, so a crossover makes synergistic sense, but what could this mean for The Force Awakens?

7.0.png

Someone at Marvel obviously got a little too cute with this teaser, as about halfway through there a clearly identifiable shot of Snorlax. Snorlax, who is a Pokémon, is not controlled by Disney, so look for this to be cut before the feature film debuts.

9.0.png

Obviously worried about the implications of Paul Rudd being the biggest star in one of its blockbusters, Marvel has ensured the film will spark the internet's interest by including a scene that features the man behind the voice behind Groot: Vin Diesel. His recent tease of his own, cast in this new light, now seems to have been referring to more than just an upcoming role in a potential Inhuman flick. Videos have become a huge part of Facebook's game, so it makes sense that Marvel would want to have the most popular man found on the social network on retainer so he can be cast in every release

Trailers have trailers now? WTF

Yup.

Because the movie studios KNOW that people will most likely hit the [skip button] on YouTube if the trailer is 1:50 minutes or longer..... but when they chop that summabich down to 0:18 seconds... THEN YOUTUBE CAN FORCE PEOPLE TO WATCH THE WHOLE THING WITHOUT 'SKIPPING'.... before that OTHER SHIT they actually 'clicked on' starts playing.

YouTube believes that 20 seconds is the 'threshold' time limit that most people will endure some (unwanted) bullshit.... to see the other bullshit they actually WANTED to see.
