Check out Treasure Island. It's halfway across the bay bridge and you can rent a room from about 600 to $1,000 a month.

If you have a few grand to put play consider buying a house boat and getting a live-aboard slip at the Emeryville Marina. It will run you less than $1,000 a month all in and has a free bus to MacArthur Bart Station
