Not only do they check the balance, they automatically debit the money. The check then runs through the machine and prints the banking information on the back and the check is returned to the customer as their receipt. The vendor doesn't even keep the check anymore when using such a device.

Has been rumored, many of the known celebrity jewelers used to throw in a few fake diamonds when they make a lot of their stuff anyways. Who's going to check every single diamond or can tell, what's manufactured from what's real? You'd need a diamond reader with some of the good simulated diamonds today.
