Mom of infant kidnapped from hospital 20 years ago says ordeal has made 'mockery' of her life
![]()
The mother of an infant kidnapped from a Florida hospital 20 years ago this month now wishes that “they never would have found her.”
Shanara Mobley tells the Florida Times-Union that finding out her daughter was alive early last year “was one of the happiest days of my life.” However, Mobley says that she does not have contact with Kamiyah and has even blocked her phone number on her cellphone because of their contentious relationship.
Kamiyah Mobley was taken from a hospital in Jacksonville in 1998 by Gloria Williams, who was hit with an 18-year prison sentence last month. Williams raised Kamiyah as Alexis Manigo in South Carolina, and that is the name the daughter is still using.
In addition, Shanara Mobley tells the Times-Union that Kamiyah did not send her a Mother’s Day card last year or this year. She says that Kamiyah did send Mother’s Day cards to a Florida jail where Williams was held.
“I don’t deal with disrespect,” a teary Mobley told the Times-Union. “I wish they never would have found her."
Kamiyah found out 18 months before Williams' arrest that she was not her real mother. Instead of turning her in, she urged Williams to flee, according to the newspaper. Before Williams was sentenced, Kamiyah said she hoped she did not get a long sentence.
Despite this, Shanara Mobley just wanted to move forward and make Kamiyah part of her life.
“We were going to be this big, happy family,” she told the Times-Union, which goes into depth about the kidnapping in a new podcast.
Kamiyah was Shanara Mobley’s first child. She bought a cake for her daughter on her birthday every year she was missing. She said she was angered by those who believed she was responsible for Kamiyah’s disappearance.
“Everybody was saying I sold the baby, I gave the baby away,” she told the newspaper. “Come on now, if I thought it was going to be this hard, I could have got an abortion. I could still be running the streets. I could have been doing drugs, drinking, all that. I chose to do right: to have a beautiful baby.”
Mobley has five other children aged 3 to 15. She is worried about them in wake of this ordeal.
“This is what Gloria [Williams] and Kamiyah brought upon my children,” she tells the newspaper. “And I truly feel it in my heart; I just wish she would not have come back. I really do. Because [Kamiyah] came back, this has made a mockery of my life.
“I’m still lost,” she said. “I don’t have a relationship with my child. What did I gain? Nothing.”

OK, here's the real reason birth mom is mad - MONEY Court documents filed in Duval County provide more details into the settlement Kamiyah's birth mother received to settle a lawsuit against the hospital where her baby was snatched back in 1998. According to what were initially confidential settlement documents, the University Hospital settled all claims for negligence and failed security for 1.9 million dollars. But the June 2000 settlement documents came with a special provision. The agreement says that 1.2 million dollars was paid to Kamiyah's birth mother, Shanara Mobley, and her attorneys. A remaining $725,000 was put into an annuity to pay Shanara approximately $3,000 a month for the rest of her life. But there was also money put aside for Kamiyah. $307,000 was to be used to purchase a fund on behalf of Kamiyah Mobley. These funds were to be paid to her if she is located alive and properly identified through DNA tests by July 10, 2016-- Kamiyah's 18th birthday. If not, the funds were to be paid to Shanara Mobley directly. But nine years later, financial hardship would cause Shanara to sell her future rights to 120 monthly payments from the million dollar settlement to another person. She sold this is exchange for an upfront lump sum settlement. So bio Mom blew through her part of the $.

That chick is crazy, a nutcase: she tried to beat up Iyanla Vanzant. They had to get security on her.
