Kobe's Parents at the Memorial: do you feel they were treated with respect?

It's no secret that Kobe and his parents weren't on the best of terms at the time. That stated, does it seem a little crass that there was no acknowledgement of them at the memorial? Perhaps I overlooked it, and if so, I'll happily delete this thread. But, were they treated properly in your opinion?

I just can't imagine not acknowledging the 2 people who brought him into this world. His mom looked as if she may have felt some type of way about it as well.

I had friends mention the exact same thing while the Life Celebration was going on.

His parents basically disowned him. They disapproved of him marrying her and never got over it and treated her as such...so she is just supposed to act like they were one big happy family? Be fake??? She talked about her immediate family and the life they made in spite of his parents selfish behavior.....they got what they earned.

And remember the letter he wrote to his younger 17 year old self... "The next time I write to you, I may touch on the challenges of mixing blood with business. The most important advice I can give to you is to make sure your parents remain PARENTS and not managers.
Before you sign that first contract, figure out the right budget for your parents — one that will allow them to live beautifully while also growing your business and setting people up for long-term success."

He adjusted to his role better than his parents did.... Him marrying against their wishes was just the beginning of them losing control of HIS life......

I'm glad you wrote this bruh. Since we don't know the ins and outs, it's difficult to judge. Perhaps he was estranged form them for a reason. As kind as he seemed to be, my guess is that they must have done something to trigger that rip in the relationship.

I swear, njggas are such women these days. Fucking sensitive ass bitches. He was estranged from his parents. They disowned him and y’all want them to get special recognition? You dumb faggots follow narratives that women create on instragram or Facebook and you mindless imbeciles roll with it as if it was the gospel

while we’re at it, let’s acknowledge his Highschool sweetheart! FOH!

Vanessa Bryant was 100%in charge of the memorial. She requested the guest speakers and organized the event. Why on earth are we giving recognition to parents? This is Kobe’s memorial... it’s about him and his daughter and to a lesser degree the others who died on the chopper. This dumb shit sounds exactly what I’d expect some dumb bitch to say and guess what.... bgol follows suit. Smh.

I’ve never seen the parents at any jersey retirement ceremony, any significant events, etc... BUT nooowwww all of a sudden a memorial for Kobe must include recognition for parents? Y’all niggas are a bunch of women

Yeah when they tried to sell his shit that seemed to be the straw that broke the camel’s back; he’s bankrolling them and they try to squeeze more out; yeah; understandable that he was cool on em.

No I agree but to an extent. They were bleeding him from my perspective which led to him shunning them. I don’t know the entire story but I’d never do that to my mom, May she Rest In Peace . My dad? Oh I got something special planned for him. You’d love it.

Kobe Bryant Reveals Why His Relationship With His Parents Is Awful And Why He Hasn’t Spoken To Them In Three YEARS
#KOBE BRYANT
by Matt Keohan 4 years ago

Kobe Bryant is freshly retired, but he’s still taking shots. This time aimed at his parents, former NBA forward Joe “Jellybean” Bryant and his wife Pam, who were both absent in their son’s final NBA game ever.
In a longform piece written by ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, Kobe candidly discusses how his once close relationship with his parents soured after Kobe felt his parents were never satisfied with what he provided for them. He hasn’t spoken to them in over three years.
“Our relationship is shit,” he says. “I say [to them], ‘I’m going to buy you a very nice home, and the response is ‘That’s not good enough’?” he says. “Then you’re selling my shit?”
Kobe is of course talking about the ugly incident back in 2013 when Joe and Pam went behind Kobe’s back and attempted to auction off six of their son’s memorabilia items–including two of high school uniforms and two rings for the 2000 Lakers championship team.
Bryant then sued Goldin Auctions, the brokerage company his parents used, which was met with a counter suit that maintained that Pamela was the owner of the items, revealing that the company had already given her an advance of $450,000 to pay for a new home for Bryant’s father and herself in Las Vegas. His parents then issued an apology.
Kobe also revealed the strain on the relationship he had with his sisters, Sharia and Shaya, after he claims they were relying too heavily on their brother providing for them instead of seeking out their own identities.
“They’re very smart, college-educated [women],” Kobe says. “I’m really proud of them. They were able to get their own jobs, get their own lives, take care of themselves. Now they have a better sense of self, of who they are as people, instead of being resentful because they were relying on me.
Bryant addressed how he had to make the difficult decision of cutting them off financially so they could find their own way.
“It was tough for me to do,” he says. There’s pain in his voice, not anger. “But it’s something you have to do, something you have to be very strong about.”
Yikes. Hopefully, now that the spotlight on Bryant will become dimmer as he settles into retirement, he can work on repairing the relationships that fame, fortune, and success dismantled.

There was the case where the mom wanted to sell the memorabilia that was in her basement.

interesting quote from the ESPN retirement article. It seems like Kobe had lost respect for his father long before the memorabilia incident.

Growing up, Kobe followed his father, Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, everywhere. He'd sleep with his basketball clothes on so Joe couldn't say no when he'd ask to go to practice with him. But as Kobe grew older, and learned of the disappointments of his father's NBA career, it was harder to relate. Joe was a 6-foot-9 forward with the skill set of a guard. That would be en vogue in today's NBA, but in the Eastern Conference of the late 1970s, he was miscast as a defensive specialist. According to Joe, his whole career would've been different if he'd been in a different system and able to play on the perimeter like Magic Johnson.
"When I hear those things," Kobe says. "I don't really understand them."
Why should the whims of fate -- which system he played in -- determine the success of a man's career? How could his father accept that? There is always a way to bend things the way you want them.

You're making a huge stretch there.

They were treated like SHIT. That was awful. A Damn shame........
I'm going through some shit right now, and my immediate family has been fucking horrible. I asked my brother and sister for a character reference letter and both of those sorry fuckers told me, "you write it and we'll sign it"

What the fuck kind of shit is that?

My friend and her husband showed up at court, and the three of us and two of our other friends had a powwow after court. It's almost 9pm and I haven't heard a word from my brother or sister.

Before they have hug my mother gave me on Superbowl Sunday (my brother and I alternate at my mom's house, where he lives, and my house) I haven't seen/heard from my mother since last March. Haven't seen my father since 1.5 years ago.

If I were to die, I don't know if they would come, and honestly I don't know if I would want them there.

Fuck them both

I don't know why Kobe fell out with his parents, and we'll likely never know. When you get married, you belonged to your wife, especially if you two are on great terms.

They could have been mentioned, but, oh well. They should be good enough with the invite.
