Kim Basinger blast the Academy Awards in 1989 for not nominating Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing

She’s right. That was one of the most the most universally critically acclaimed American movies of 1989. It had SERIOUS Oscar buzz all over it that year. However it only ended up being nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor, (Danny Aeillo). No Black actors were nominated, no Best Picture nomination and no Best Director nomination for Spike. It won zero awards.

By contrast, that same year Driving Miss Daisy received nine nominations and won four: Best Picture, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress (Jessica Tandy). Morgan Freeman was nominated for Best Actor but lost.

...Also, it was the 1990 Oscars, not 1989.

Well alright nigga I’m scared of you

Was never into blondes, but once upon a time, she was bad ass woman.

Pretty cool video, never saw this.

What ever happened to her, last film I remember her in was probably 8 Mile.

Heh. I remembering going to see that movie with my girl and being blown away. I had Gene Siskel’s review from the Chicago Tribune in my pocket, along with Roger Ebert’s From the Sun-Times. I didn’t read them until I’d seen the movie. After the film, on the subway we read the reviews. Both critics gave it 4 out of 4 stars. That Oscar ceremony the next year was the last one I watched until the one where Denzel won for Training Day. I thought it was bullshit how DTRT was snubbed in favor of a movie showing a Black man being subservient to a white woman.

I had to Wiki to get those stats though. Most of it wasn’t from memory lol.
