Jesse Jackson Invites Bill Cosby to Rainbow/PUSH Conference

JacksonInvites Cosby

I had never seen the Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson cry in public.
And he's seldom upstaged. Until, Bill Cosby came to town. Jackson
invited Cosby to the annual Rainbow/PUSH conference for a conversation about controversial remarks the entertainer offered May 17 at an NAACP dinner in Washington, D.C.That's when America's Jell-O Man shook things up by arguing that African Americans were betraying the legacy of civil rights victories. "The lower economic people," he said, "are not holding up their end
in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for
their kids -- $500 sneakers for what? And won't spend $200 for "Hooked
on Phonics!" Thursday morning, Cosby showed no signs of repenting as he
strode across the stage at the Sheraton Hotel ballroom before a standing-room-only crowd. Sporting a natty gold sports coat and dark glasses, he
proceeded to unload a laundry list of black America's self-imposed ills. The
iconic actor and comedian kidded that he couldn't compete with the
oratory of the Reverend but he preached circles around Jackson in their nearly
hour-long conversation, delivering brutally frank one-liners and the toughest of love. The enemy, he argues, is us:
> >> > "There is a time, ladies and gentlemen, when we have to turn
the mirror around." Cosby acknowledged he wasn't critiquing all blacks-just
"the 50% of African Americans in the lower economic neighborhood who
drop out of school," and the alarming proportions of black men in prison and
black teenage mothers. The mostly black crowd seconded him with choruses
of "Amens." To critics who pose, it's unproductive to air our dirty laundry in
public, he responds, "Your dirty laundry gets out of school at 2:30pm every
day. It's cursing on the way home, on the bus, train, in the candy store.
They are cursing and grabbing each other and going nowhere. And,the book bag is very, very thin because there's nothing in it."
"Don't worry about the white man," he adds. "I could care less about what
white people think about me . . . let 'em talk. What are they saying that
is different from what their grandfathers said and did to us? What is different is what we are doing to ourselves."
For those who say Cosby is just an elitist who's "got his" but doesn't, understand the plight of the black poor, he reminds us that, "We're going
to turn that mirror around. It's not just the poor, everybody's guilty.
Cosby and Jackson lamented that in the 50th year of Brown vs. Board
of Education, http://www.nationalcenter.org/brown.html, our failings betray our legacy.
Jackson dabbed away tears as he recalled the financial struggles at Fisk University, a historically black college and Jackson's Alma mater.
When Cosby was done, the 1,000 people in the room all jumped to their
feet in ovation.
Long after Cosby had departed, I could not find a dissenter in the crowd. But in the hotel corridor I encountered a vintage poster for sale that said volumes. The poster, which advertised the Million Man March, posters "discounted" to $5 :smh: Remember the Million Man March?
In 1995 Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan exhorted "a million
sober, disciplined, committed, dedicated, inspired black men to meet in
Washingtonon a day of atonement." In 2004, perhaps all that' s
left of that call is a $5 poster. We have shed tears too many times, at
too many watershed moments before. While the hopes they inspired have
fallen by the wayside. Not this time. Cosby's plea to parents: "Before you get
to the point where you say "I can't do nothing with them-do something with
them."
Like:
Teach our children to speak English.
When the teacher calls, show up at the school.
When the idiot box starts spewing profane rap videos, turn it off.
Refrain from cursing around the kids.
Teach our boys that women should be cherished, not raped and demeaned.
Tell them that education is a prize we won with blood and tears, not a
dishonor.
Stop making excuses for the agents and abettors of black-on-black crime.
It costs us nothing to do these things. But if we don't, it will cost us
infinitely more tears.
We all send thousands of jokes through e-mail without a second thought,

MY FIRST POST, I DROP IT LIKE IT'S HOT!

Dr. Cosby is RIGHT!!!! The 'Truth' should not hurt...it should make you mad and inspire you to do better. I don't find anything that Dr. Cosby said as being controversial. Rev. Jackson, and others like him, should be saying the same thing as often as he/they can to empower 'Blacks' to take greater responsibility for their own affairs and station on this world. Dr. Cosby should attend, and reiterate his thoughts.

fuck bill cosby and jesse jackson...time for new leaders (as if bill wasn't anything but a complainer instead of a leader) changing of the guard

What "new leaders" do you suggest?

Give me some names of people who have walked the walk, achieved in a way that shows they earned the respect of the masses and speaks with forthought and intelligence.

In order to win the 'relay race of life' (we're trying to win this thing, right?), the next runner has to at least be on the level of the baton passer to receive it and ready to run.

Jesse & Bill did what they did in their lives, and they are who they are - for better or worse. Before you dismiss 'em with a "fuck bill cosby and jesse jackson", take whatever good they have brought to the world and build on it in your world and beyond.

there are a lot of up and coming cats... granted not as long a track record as Bill and Jesse... but they are there...Cosby and Jesse are lost because they can not capture or harness the new angst your blacks are feeling...they are passe...past thier prime...they really need to pass the torch

Bill is speaking TRUTH and the TRUTH is never passe!!

Again, you fail with providing names. If this "new leadership" you claim had a message that was strong & TRUE the person and the message would rise to the top of awareness and mobilize people into action. (think MLK).

The "old message" is valid still because the meaning was lost on the benefactor generation. The ones who have it so easy; yet while they "party & bullshit" their futures and real, lasting freedoms are being stolen right before their eyes.

"...Cosby and Jesse are lost because they can not capture or harness the new angst your blacks are feeling..."

This tells me you're on the outside looking in; from whatever perspective that may be, I respectfully say you don't understand..

But, when asked, you weren't up and coming with any names. Maybe you

I didn't mean YOUR i meant YOUNG sorry about the misspelling.

as far as names go... Fred Hampton Jr, Barack Obama, Ron Dellum, Baba Ahmed, just to name a couple...

I wounld have to argue, being a young black man, that Cosby and Jesse not only have NO CLUE about also have no place in being leaders for this new generation in this new millenium...

I would also further argue that the only thing that Bill and Jesse have is contempt for the hip hop culture, our perceived way of handeling buisness, and Young black people in general...how are you going to lead anybody if you dislike them?

So again i reinterate fuck bill and jesse... they need to hang it up like a worn wool coat...they would serve better in the background

Bill and Jesse have a problem with the distructive lyrics used by so-called hip hop culture, and how it insults women and sends the wrong message to kids. I don't think they give a damn about the culture itself. Why should they. It is unique to Black people. You mentioned new generation of black people then mentioned Barak Obama and Ron Dellums.

Now I think you just pulled these names out your ass but I have a question for you as it relates to the topic and your comment, are you suggesting that those two men support the destructive nature of hip hop lyrics? You are talking about Rep Ron Dellums right? The brother that was born in 1935 who is 6 years older than Jesse and Bill Cosby who is 2 years younger than Ron. HE is the new age leader you're suggesting is the voice of the new age generation? lol. Also, Baba Ahmed. That brotha wasn't born here and unless there is another one, that brother died in 1627. Fred Hampton Jr. Actor on Dave Chappelle new movie. Please clear this up for me.

then he drop the cosby show.. now niggas is shitting on him cause he supposedly put an unrealistic portrayal of blacks on TV.. LOL.. a doctor and lawyer for parents.. niggas hate themseleves so much they got mad cause someone suggested that some of them might actually have solid working families.. LOL.. bastards.

There is something else even more remarkable about the way i think and invision things, which is that black people, working together; express a need to LEARN, and then by helping one another, how to give a voice to their concerns, this goes far beyond material posessions. We should defend our rights as a people, to the strenghten advancement of underprivileged NEGROES in society in a way that probably couldn’t have been imagined.

Oh no....

Bull Cosby gets ANOTHER chance to spout his sermon of classism/separatism to other willing self-haters (look in the mirror) who would love nothing more than to point fingers at their shortcomings at the least likely to defend themselves...much like the bully(middle class Blacks) who WON'T challenge the real bully (Whitey) but will run over to the innocent bystander (lower class Blacks) because you have to bully someone.... :hmm:

The Black youth that Bull Cosby browbeats are:

(1.) graduating high school at the highest rate of Black American history.

(2.) are having the least teenaged pregnancies in the last 40 years.

(3.) are attending college at the highest levels in the history of Black America....

Unfortunately someone has to take the blame for the lack of Black businesses in America and it's the poor...who aren't what is known as a "Talented Tenth" of any note.

Someone has to take the blame for the $600 billion Black GNP that gets donated to White corporate America every year....

That someone is the lower class Blacks...as if they somehow became middle class then there would be all-Black businesses in all-Black neighborhoods that recycle Black dollars in that neighborhhod like every other ethnic group.

It is truly sad, bordering pathetic, how Black people who have "the littles"...a "little" education, a "little" career, a "little" house, a little car can actually think that they aren't AT LEAST equally responsible for the handbasket in which Black America is going to hell....

As usual, interesting.

Bill and Jesse have brought up some good points. But they are part of the Black Elite. They Black Elite have a similar agenda like other elite. They just want to avoid the coming lynching.

As far as Jesse, he's a unique individual, and it is sad to see, when we constantly "flock" to him. Sidebar(there are some people who believe he was a shooter in the King assassination) I don't know about that one.

Contrary to popular belief, there are "leaders" in our community that are keeping the lid tight on the glass ceiling. And until that is recognized, "Ignorance is Golden."

If you have not been in your public schools lately, you need to visit. You need a wake up call. Times are very different.

That's all for now

Funny ain't it. Not only do we have disagreement with "whitey" ... we have disagreemwent internally with ourselves.

THIS IS NOT IN DEFENSE OF JESSE JACKSON, BILL COSBY OR ANY OTHER SO-CALLED BLACK LEADER -- but, how in the hell can you <u>note the good points</u> -- but then, quickly and without any given reason, simply categorize and demonize those who may belong to a different economic strata ???

Self-hate must come in variety of colors and flavors. Or, maybe within the race struggle, there is a class struggle as well. Or, further, maybe we have been taught well to resent each other - so we divide ourselves and conquer nothing ... not even our own tranquility.

Clear up First item:
I'm not demonizing anyone in any income strata. I am bringing up the point that people in higher income stratas with hidden agendas aren't healthy to us.

By the way, my income stata puts me in that top 10%. Granted it's not at the levels of Bill and Jesse, but don't get it twisted.

Clear up Second item:
Sorry about that let me clear that up, BILL has made brought great points and they are true. People flock to JESSE with blind folds. JESSE is the joke.

Reason 1.

That elite I refer to is:

Reason 2.

Secret people who do secret things, openly worries me.

If you are unaware where Jesse get's his money do some research.

Just because someone says something about "us" in a good way, we automatically jump on the team without knowing their personal objective. And when you lay down with dogs you get fleas.

Since we, as Blacks, don't know truth, then we are the ones lost from ourselves and from each other; unable to love each other. Let us be responsible for our own destiny; realize that every other culture, was hatched from Africa...we are the chosen people. Read Job 28:12-28, http://www.christnotes.org/bible.php?q=Job+28:12-28&ver=kjv. This is OUR CONTEMPORARY "HISTORY", the so-called Negro’s, the so-called Black man’s, "special wisdom"; GHETTO WISDOM, what is wrong with people like Bill Cosby speaking up on these issues, his son was a homocide victim.
READ ON....
Without knowledge we are politically, educationally, socially, economically and spiritually dead, as Ezekiel, 37:1-10

This is typical self-hate AND ignorance to the big picture that is regularly exemplified by those who live in their insular world created for them by the mold that their real "God" Whitey has created for them....

I too live that life....

The difference is that I'm not as ignorant as you and a few others to actually think that I'm sooo far above the lower class that I couldn't get railroaded in a by a BS judicial system who forces one to choose between fighting for his/her freedom at the incredible cost of DECADES being taken from your life upon a loss...a bigoted/racist White cop who decides that he wants to do a re-mix of the Rodney King a55whupping---the Diallo shooting---all these are right around the corner for EVERY black person.

If you don't believe me, try this experiment on for size....

Ride in an imported car with a couple of cats from the projects...have the police stop you...have the police say, "All you ni66ers get out of the car,"...stay in the car because "I'm not a ******".

Describe the aftermath...if you're able.

I won't even get into the economics of who actually is and has let Black America down, nor will I touch base on the "myths" perpetuated by the middle and upper classes against the lower classes because it would be as big a waste of time as trying to get Christians to understand the inaccuaracies in the Bible....

Right on point...........

My $0.02:

It's not so much WHAT Bill Cosby said. What he said was old news to the black community.
It is WHO he said it too.

Why wasn't he at the source of the problem? Why is he preaching this to college students who are not reflective of the things he is speaking about? A lot of those black college students were probably embarassed cause they know that they are trying and are not the ones that should be getting this tongue-lashing, especially in front of their white peers who were not socialised around black people to have a balanced view of black people.

THAT is my main problem. As the old folks would say, why is he preaching to the choir?

WHY? It is because he is psycologically programmed to try to separate blacks further into blacks and nigg3rs.

Whites have created a sub-class called white trash. It is a convenient tool to prevent whites from being embarassed. When one of them makes news, they call the person white trash i.e. not REALLY white.

Some of the black elites are pushing that agenda to create a sub-class and a distinction from lower socio-economic blacks. The way to do this is not to help on a systematic level but to cast blame on the intended target and at the same time create embarassing situations for those on their way out of hardships that cause them to stop identifying with the ones they left.

The danger however is that it is always a numbers game. Blacks, being and becoming the smallest minority at the fastest rate, in the US cannot afford to play that game else we all lose...........

Where is the self hate in my response? Not once did I call anybody here ignorant. And no need to preach to the choir about riding in an exotic whip in the wrong area. Been there, done that. I grew up on the block my damned self. Still living there now. Not too long ago me and my boy got pulled over and searched out of town after we left the mall. A Black man and a Puerto Rican in an out of the way town, decent car, trunk full of new stuff, wearing jewelry and me carrying a Blackberry.(AND, I just happen to rap and produce, and I'm a product of, as well as a part of hip hop culture. So there's another strike against me.) I know firsthand about "driving while black" or getting sideways looks cuz I have tattoos. Searched us AND the car in the middle of the turnpike. 1 unmarked and 3 squad cars. Was it necessary? We were minding our damn business and heading home. But we "fit the description". But the fact of the matter is, "parents" aren't parenting these days. Not all, but a lot. Let your kids run around doing whatever the fuck they want, no manners, no respect, no values. I don't agree with everyrthing Cosby said, but you gotta admit some of it is glaringly true. On a side note......Am I a hater because although I love Hip Hop, it upsets me that a rapper whose career is based on getting shot up a bunch of times gets more love than acts that prefer to kick knowledge? No. That aside, my point is this. Most people aren't going to change unless it's convenient to do so. In other words, not til you're caught with your hand in the cookie jar. And instead of admitting the wrongs and being accountable for their own actions people get indignant, and blame everyone else but themselves. We tear each other down to make ourselves somehow look or feel better. I never understood the logic in that. I don't fully get with Cosby's notion that "lower income people aren't holding up their end of the deal", there are a lot of affluent folk that could give a fuck since they don't live in the hood anymore... it's not their problem til "one of those ignorant niggaz is making us look bad again". It's not White America's fault.... Black America let Black America down and everyone else is getting rich off our self destruction. Thus concludes my rant. Each one teach one.

Oh, and cop my album "Elemental Shift" in May

Before the last response, there were 28 posts in this thread. Guess the rock hit the poster that squealed.

I knew it wouldn't be long before you reared your head in defense of self-hate.... :smh:

There is a silver lining in this situation....

At least you haven't asked anyone who, what, when, where, how, if, should, would, could, may, can, etc.... ;)

Yet....
