Ron Johnson now says he helped coordinate effort to pass false elector slates to Pence, but his new explanation drew a quick rebuke
WASHINGTON – After initially claiming to be "basically unaware" of an effort by his staff to get fake presidential elector documents to Vice President Mike Pence, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson said Thursday he coordinated with a Wisconsin attorney to pass along such information and alleged a Pennsylvania congressman brought slates of fake electors to his office — a claim that was immediately disputed.

Evidence presented this week by the U.S. House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol showed Johnson's chief of staff tried to deliver the two states' lists of fake presidential electors for former President Donald Trump to Pence on the morning of the U.S. Capitol insurrection but was rebuffed by Pence's aide.

Johnson initially told reporters this week he did not know where the documents came from and that his staff sought to forward it to Pence.
But he said in a Thursday interview on WIBA-AM that he had since discovered the documents came from Pennsylvania U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, and acknowledged he coordinated with Dane County attorney Jim Troupis and his chief of staff by text message that morning to get to Pence a document Troupis described as regarding "Wisconsin electors."

Throw his lying ass in jail now

DOJ subpoenas Georgia Republican Party chairman as it expands Trump fake elector probe

220622171717-david-shafer-file-super-169.jpg

In this February 5, 2018, file photo, state Republican Sen. David Shafer speaks at the Capitol in Atlanta. Federal investigators have subpoenaed Shafer for information related to a fake elector scheme in the state.

(CNN)Federal investigators subpoenaed the Georgia Republican Party chairman for information related to the fake elector scheme there -- as the Justice Department has issued a fresh round of subpoenas to people from several states who acted as rogue electors after the 2020 presidential election, multiple sources familiar with the situation told CNN.
The subpoena for the chairman, David Shafer, represents a significant step because he played a central role in organizing the fake slate of electors from Georgia and coordinated the effort with the Trump campaign.
The focus on Shafer also comes as sources tell CNN the Justice Department subpoenaed Trump electors this week in Georgia, Michigan and Pennsylvania -- all states that former President Donald Trump lost.
The Justice Department has been scrutinizing the Trump campaign's use of so-called alternate electors. The new round of subpoenas represents an escalation of a criminal probe that, before now, had approached lower-level Republicans. All along, however, federal investigators have pursued information about political figures higher up, including at the top of the Trump campaign.

In the weeks after the 2020 election and leading up to January 6, 2021, Trump's allies sent fake slates of electors to the National Archives declaring that the then-President had won seven states that he actually lost. The bid failed, and then-Vice President Mike Pence certified Joe Biden's electoral win on January 6 after rioters had been cleared from the US Capitol.
Just this week, the House select committee's separate investigation highlighted that some lawyers working with the Trump campaign had directed the effort to convene Trump's fake slates in battleground states he lost.

CNN previously reported the criminal probe sought information from Republicans in several states, including Georgia and Michigan, who had backed out of serving as Trump electors.
In this latest round of subpoenas, the targets are people who signed on to the illegitimate slates, sources say.
Shafer did not respond to a request for comment. He now finds himself embroiled in three separate investigations -- the congressional inquiry into January 6, a Fulton County, Georgia, criminal probe and the Justice Department's investigation.
Another source said the FBI has sought information, including the contents of a phone, from Brad Carver, one of the Georgia fake electors. The FBI has also been seeking information about Georgia Republicans who participated in a private Signal chat in the run-up to the 2020 election, the source said.
Carver did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

DOJ issues more subpoenas in probe of invalid Trump electors: reports

The Justice Department has issued more subpoenas in a probe tied to a fraudulent elector scheme aimed at rejecting President Biden’s 2020 presidential win, multiple news outlets reported.

The Washington Post, which was first to report the news, said the people who were issued subpoenas included Thomas Lane, who was involved in former President Trump’s campaign in New Mexico and Arizona, and Brad Carver, a Georgia lawyer who allegedly considered himself to be an elector for the former president.
Officials with the FBI confirmed to the Post that court-authorized law enforcement action had been taken by agents in different places. The addresses of those targeted by federal agents were tied to the men, according to public records, though the FBI did not identify those targeted specifically.

A campaign aide for Trump in Michigan, Shawn Flynn, also received a subpoena, The New York Times reported, citing people familiar. People familiar told the Post that Georgia Republican Party chairman and alleged Trump elector David Shafer also received a subpoena.

The news outlets could not immediately reach Lane, Carver or Flynn for comment. A lawyer for Shafer declined to comment to the Post about the matter.

The FBI referred The Hill to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., which declined to comment when asked about the matter.

The development comes as the Justice Department pursues its own investigation related to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot while the House select committee investigating the attack continues to its slate of public hearings this month.

In the latest hearing that the House panel held on Tuesday, the select committee presented evidence and testimony showing the role that the former president and his allies played in a pressure campaign to get officials from battleground states where Biden won to overturn those results by sending slates of so-called alternate electors to the Electoral College.

Among the revelations from the hearing was evidence connecting two Republican lawmakers — Sen. Ron Johnson (Wis.) and Rep. Andy Biggs (Ariz.) — to the fake elector scheme.

A spokesperson for Johnson denied the senator’s involvement.

“The senator had no involvement in the creation of an alternate slate of electors and had no foreknowledge that it was going to be delivered to our office. This was a staff to staff exchange. His new Chief of Staff contacted the Vice President’s office,” Alexa Henning, a Johnson spokeswoman, tweeted.

“The Vice President’s office said not to give it to him and we did not. There was no further action taken. End of story,” she added in a follow-up tweet.

The Hill has reached out to the Justice Department, a lawyer for Shafer and Carver for comment. The Hill was not able to immediately reach Lane or Flynn for comment.

'Stop the Steal' leader Ali Alexander testifies to Jan. 6 grand jury

(CNN)Ali Alexander, the leader of the "Stop the Steal" group who helped to organize rallies before the US Capitol attack, testified to a federal grand jury on Friday in the Justice Department's sweeping investigation into the January 6, 2021, insurrection.
CNN spotted Alexander entering and exiting the federal courthouse in Washington, DC, where a federal grand jury that has heard January 6-related matters meets. He spent about four hours at the courthouse on Friday behind closed doors.
Alexander did not respond to questions at the courthouse. He has not been charged with any crime.
He acknowledged his testimony in a social media post on Friday. "Today a DC grand jury brought me in under subpoena and the threat of imprisonment. I told them I committed no crimes and observed no one committing any crimes during the 2020 Election and January 6th," he wrote on the Trump-founded site Truth Social.

Alexander is the first-known, high-profile witness to testify in the confidential criminal investigative proceedings related to rally organizing. In April, he publicly confirmed he had received a subpoena and would cooperate with federal authorities.
He previously handed over thousands of communications and testified behind closed doors to the House select committee investigating the attack -- a separate investigation. Alexander is one of the few individuals who has said he has ties to influential right-wing figures close to former President Donald Trump, members of Congress and extremist groups.
CNN previously unearthed videos of Alexander saying he would reach out to the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers to provide security for his events in DC. Leaders from both groups have been charged with seditious conspiracy and are headed to trial later this year.
This story has been updated with further developments Friday.

Jan. 6 committee announces surprise hearing for Tuesday on new evidence
The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot announced it will hold a new hearing on Tuesday "to present recently obtained evidence and receive witness testimony."
The surprise hearing, set for 1 p.m. ET on Capitol Hill, was announced Monday afternoon. It was not immediately clear what new evidence the committee planned to reveal. The panel did not identify who was scheduled to testify.
Monday's announcement came days after the committee's fifth public hearing, which focused on how former President Donald Trump pressured the Department of Justice to help him overturn his loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
The committee previously planned to hold seven hearings on the initial findings from its nearly yearlong investigation into Jan. 6, 2021, when a violent pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol and sent members of Congress fleeing for safety.

Those hearings were originally expected to be held in June. But the committee's chairman, Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said last week that the final hearings in the series would come in July, suggesting that the schedule changed due to new evidence coming in.
Earlier this month, for instance, the committee obtained never-before-seen documentary footage from a filmmaker with access to Trump and his family before and after the riot.
The bipartisan committee has put Trump at the center of what it calls a coordinated multi-pronged conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results that directly led to the violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6.
Trump, who ultimately left the White House after one term in office, has denied wrongdoing while continuing to spread false claims of widespread election fraud, which form a central component of the committee's case against the former president.
Vice Chair Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., has said that the committee's final two public hearings will focus on how Trump illegally directed his supporters toward the Capitol, then failed to take quick action to quell the attack once it began.
The committee has no power to file criminal charges against Trump or anyone else, and it is not clear whether the panel plans to issue a criminal referral to the Justice Department. Attorney General Merrick Garland has told reporters that federal prosecutors are watching the hearings.

John Eastman searched and had phone seized by federal agents last week, he says

(CNN)The FBI seized the phone of former President Donald Trump's election attorney John Eastman last week, according to a new court filing from the lawyer.
Eastman disclosed the search and seizure in federal court in a lawsuit that he filed in New Mexico on Monday, calling it improper.
About six federal investigators approached the right-wing lawyer in New Mexico when he was exiting a restaurant after dinner with his wife and a friend, according to the court filings. Agents were able to get access to Eastman's email accounts on his iPhone 12 Pro, the filings said.
Eastman is the latest person whose communications have become part of extensive Justice Department investigations related to January 6.

Eastman contends the agents "forced" him to unlock his phone. A seizure warrant document included in Eastman's filing noted any electronic devices agents seized were to be sent to Washington, DC, or the Justice Department inspector general's forensic lab in northern Virginia.
Eastman is asking a federal judge to force the Justice Department to return his property, destroy records it has obtained and block investigators from being allowed to access the phone.
The search and seizure occurred the same day that federal agents raided the home of Jeffrey Clark, the former Justice Department lawyer sympathetic to Trump's conspiracies of election fraud.

Senate sergeant at arms during Capitol riot dies
Michael Stenger, the Senate sergeant at arms who oversaw security in the upper chamber during the Capitol riot, died Monday morning, according to multiple reports. The cause of his death is not immediately clear. Stenger held the post from 2018 to 2021 and stepped down the day after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
There is an opportunity to learn lessons from the events of January 6th. Investigations should be considered as to funding and travel of what appears to be professional agitators. First Amendment rights should always be considered in conjunction with professional investigations," he said in an opening statement before a Senate committee last year.

Stenger had joined the team for the Senate sergeant at arms in 2011 following a multi-decade career at the Secret Service. Then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell nominated him as Senate sergeant at arms and he was confirmed unanimously.

McConnell "requested and received" his resignation the day after a mob of violent rioters stormed the Capitol, Axios reported. Stenger received fierce criticism from members of Congress over his handling of security on the day of the riot.

Karen Gibson is serving as the current Senate sergeant at arms.
Ultimately, it took over four hours for the National Guard to arrive on the scene that day, and some have questioned whether Senger and his counterpart, former House Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving, could have called for backup sooner, WUSA9 reported.
In response to the security breach on Jan. 6, 2021, Congress passed a package of procedural reforms to quash any confusion in the rules about what authority Congress's security team had to call for reinforcements. President Joe Biden then signed the legislation into law.
