James Ingram has died at the age of 66.

The Grammy-winning R&B singer-songwriter’s longtime friend and creative partner, choreographer and Grey’s Anatomy producer Debbie Allen, confirmed the news on social media on Tuesday.

“I have lost my dearest friend and creative partner James Ingram to the Celestial Choir,” she announced in a tweet Tuesday. “He will always be cherished, loved and remembered for his genius, his love of family and his humanity. I am blessed to have been so close. We will forever speak his name.”

Ingram reportedly died from a form of brain cancer and had been ill for some time, according to TMZ.

A native of Ohio, Ingram had been a session keyboardist in Los Angeles before getting his big break after Quincy Jones heard one of his demos and asked him to sing several songs on his 1981 album, The Dude.

Ingram co-wrote Michael Jackson’s chart-topper “P.Y.T.” with Jones, and he teamed up with Jackson and Jones again when he appeared in the “We Are The World” charity single and video.

Jones paid tribute to Ingram by sharing a video of Ingram performing their collaboration “Just Once” to Twitter on Tuesday. He wrote in the caption, “There are no words to convey how much my ❤️ aches with the news of the passing of my baby brother, James Ingram. With that soulful, whisky sounding voice, James was simply magical. He was, & always will be, beyond compare. Rest In Peace my baby bro…You’ll be in my ❤️ forever.”

“Another dear friend has made his transition. James Ingram, a voice to be recognized and revered, a wonderful human being full of joy,” Dionne Warwick, his duet partner on “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” told PEOPLE in a statement. “Truly deep heartfelt condolence to his wife and his family. He will be missed and may he now rest peacefully!”

Before going solo, Ingram was a member of the 1970s group Revelation Funk. His solo career produced a string of hits in the ’80s, including his duet with Patti Austin, “Baby Come to Me,” and duet with Linda Ronstadt, “Somewhere Out There.”

Nominated a total of 14 times at the Grammys, Ingram won a gramophone trophy in 1981 for “One Hundred Ways” and then again in 1984 for his duet with Michael McDonald, “Yah Mo B There.” Among his other nods was a nomination for best new artist.

“Ingram’s rich voice and masterful songwriting has made a lasting impact on the music industry,” the Recording Academy said in a statement. “Our thoughts go out to his loved ones during this difficult time.”

Ingram was also nominated in back to back years at the Academy Awards in 1994 and 1995 in the best original song category for “The Day I Fall In Love” and “Look What Love Has Done,” respectively.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Debbie Robinson, and their six children.

James Ingram Is Very Private But We Can’t Resist Showing His Gorgeous Grown Daughters

Posted On : June 17, 2018

It’s hard to think of James Ingram, without reminiscing about at least one of his timeless classics. Whether we’re taking about his slow joints, like “Just Once,” or one of his more uptempo jams, like “Yah Mo B There” with Michael McDonald- they ALL bring back great memories. They also remind us of the days when REAL R&B still existed, as opposed to some of this hot garbage being labeled as R&B…or hell, being labeled as music at all in today’s times…but I digress.

Anywho, moving on to James Ingram and his fam.’ The R&B/gospel crooner has been married to his wife, Debbie, for 43 years and they’re still happy and crazy in love. Ain’t that beautiful?!! James is the son of a deacon and 1 of 6 children. So it’s no surprise that he and Debbie mimicked his parents, by having 6 kids of their own. Like Debbie, their kids pretty much enjoy life away from the spotlight. So it’s rare that they’re ever scene, or recognized as the children of a legend in public. HOWEVER, y’all already know it was only a matter of time before we did a lil’ seek and search on the Ingram offspring…I mean, we are, in fact, self proclaimed truth gold diggers, diggin for the truth at all times. So, lo and behold we found them…or at least MOST of them. Check out the Ingram fam’ below…

Meet The Ingram Kids
Out of the Ingrams’ 6 kids, we can introduce y’all to five of them: Jasmine, Jash, Jahnee, Jiaya, and Jason Ingram. As y’all can pretty much tell, Debbie and James wanted to keep that ‘J. Ingram’ stamp strong – even for their daughters…gotta love it.

Jahnee Ingram

Jahnee is all about her family and is the proud mother of her 10 month old son, Kenzo. She’s focused on leading her child by example of how to help others who are less fortunate than she was growing up as the daughter of a legend. In a recent online post, she shard a photo of herself, her husband Castavius, and their son, after a long day of feeding homeless citizens outside of Faith Tabernacle Church in West Los Angeles, where she and her family reside.

She also paid homage to her pops, with the below caption and throwback photo (above) of them:

Jahnee Ingram: “Happy Father’s Day to the G.O.A.T. I Love you Dad!”

Jiaya Ingram
Jiaya is a self proclaimed “Black Womanist, Intersectional Feminist with Sex-Positive Steelo, Vocal and Visual Artist.” She, too, enjoys paying homage to their dad online.

For his birthday in February 2018, she shared a throwback photo of herself chillin’ with her dad in 1992, with a caption that read:

“Happy birthday to the best dad in the world and happy 44th anniversary to the best couple in the world. Strongest people I know”

Jasmin Ingram-Thomas
Jasmin is happily married and raising her beautiful daughter, Naeveah…

Jash Ingram
Now, here’s where it gets a little elusive. Jash is following in his dad’s musical footsteps, as a producer and musician. He’s also produced music for Debbie Allen’s son, Thump Nixon. There are no recent photos of him.

Jason Ingram

Jason is even more elusive than Jash. Not a doggone thing is known about him, but unlike his brother, Jash, at least a current photo does exist of him.

As for the the sixth Ingram kid, your guess is as good as our’s.

And there ya have it ILOSM family!

oh man we lost james ingram...

this brother has been like an institution of R&B/Soul since the 80s. Both as a singer and a writer.
Always very classy, always top shelf material with one of the most recognisable voices in the business.
Thank you so much for all of your great albums, James. I personally always loved your funkier jams, and you always delivered.
Rest in Peace James Ingram, a true soulful legend.
