Big mistake. Yes, his popularity can draw people to the school, but he's got no experience and will likely be more like Steve Spurrier when he was with the Redskins.

You can't half-ass coaching. I don't think Deion will do what it takes to succeed as a head coach

I debated posting this yesterday, but people I spoke to said it wasn't concrete enough to say. But damn near with a wink, and security and some other prep been going on around this mf so I'm inclined to believe it but I guess we'll see.

If he does they will suck. Plus let's not forget that FAMU and Bethune Cookman are now part of the SWAC so Deion better come with it.

daaaaayyyuuuummmmmm!!!! I did not know that! This is the beginning of a whole new era!

I agree Deion has proven himself a winner. An I expect him to be a winner as a coach. But I pity his teams defensive backs. Don't get beat long and don't ever miss a tackle.

I've been following SWAC football. The hire makes sense from a budget and exposure standpoint, but make no mistake Sanders is a hardcore opportunist. I believe he started that Prime Prep Academy a while back, that's now closed down, to be right in a position he's in now for a head coaching job with many athletes he coached himself he can easily recruit those high school seniors including his sons and now continue to coach them in college. Speaking of Prime Prep, there is some interesting articles on that school where he was actually fired, twice, as a coach.

Back to JSU football, it's no question they should be doing much better than they've been doing in football these last several years with the rich tradition and having the highest attendance every year in college football FCS. But the leadership has been an embarrassment. They fired a head coach the same year he took them to the SWAC championship nearly 10 years ago because he lost in the title game and they hadn't been back since.

let's face it, many HBCU sports programs are playing at a high school level due to lack of resources,, I attended an HBCU, so no shots fired,, it only took watching a few Bayou Classics on national tv to recognize this,, so i believe deion's name can only help J-State's exposure (even if he turns out to be a dud),, remember when super bowl winning QB doug williams took over as head coach at Grambling, no one had a problem & he wasn't a bad coach,,

Well, to some extent, the resources IMHO was in need of better coaches number one as a lot of times the talent was there, but the coaching was just piss poor. Speaking of that and JSU, at one period JSU had this high school coach coaching JSU football when he was a loser as a high school coach with zero college head coaching experience I kid you not and he went like 3- 30 before he was fired, I think his name was Bell...

As for Doug Williams - he did pretty good as a high school head coach if I recall which we can't say the same for Deion and DW has been at an HBCU program under one of the greatest coaches ever which certainly helped and I think quarterbacks as head coaches do better than defensive backs in my opinion.

With FAMU and Bethune Cookman joining the SWAC it adds the state of Florida to the SWAC geographical mix. The only southern states with HBCU's not in the SWAC are mainly Georgia and Tennessee. However with the two Florida HBCU's the SWAC has Texas(Texas Southern and Prairie View), Arkansas(University of Pine Bluff), Louisiana(Grambling and Southern), Mississippi(JSU, Miss Valley, and Alcorn), Alabama(Alabama St. and Alabama A&M).

I wonder what the SEAC and other HBCU's going to do with SWAC being the black HBCU power conference? Man just imagine being a HBCU football fan and you see a football schedule like this. :hellyea:

Jackson State U
Pine Bluff U
Southern U
Alabama State U
Bethune Cookman
Texas Southern
Mississippi Valley
Alcorn State U
Prairie View U
Alabama A&M
Florida A&M
Grambling State U

As a JSU guy these are 11 great games and new memories and new rivalries. Hopefully we can still keep our game with Tennessee St. U as well for a 12th game.

We from the SWAC welcome FAMU and Bethune Cookman with open arms:groupwave: If any of you are grads of FAMU and Bethune Cookman you will dig the SWAC culture and family love.

So what ...does the MEAC loose its luster? I mean Savannah State had to leave because they could not compete but why did North Carolina leave ? I know my school Albany State wants to keep the SIAC going for the smaller schools which is where Bethune and FAM started out but back then the MEAC was the place to go funny how things can change over time. I just wished they televised the SWAC games more...the MEAC too, hell I wish they would put all the HBCU on free TV weekly for us to see so they can get that TV money. But the D1 schools would somehow block that for many reasons that are obvious.
