Iran is helping the Houthi rebels in Yemen target and down U.S. Reaper drones, U.S. officials say

In recent years, enemies of the U.S. have found ways to jam the communications of the massive, armed MQ-9 Reaper drones and send them off course.

An Air Force MQ-9 Reaper fires a missile over the Nevada Test and Training Range at Nellis Air Force Base last year.

Iran is helping the Houthi rebels in Yemen target U.S. Reaper drones, which has enabled the Houthis to shoot down or damage several of the massive, unmanned aircraft, say two U.S. officials.

Tehran was already supporting the Houthiswith money, training and equipment, but in recent months the Iranians have also helped the rebels stop the MQ-9 Reapers, which are used for both intelligence collection and airstrikes. Reapers can carry Hellfire missiles and laser-guided bombs.

The Houthis targeted and hit an MQ-9 last week, but the drone was able to land and the U.S. military recovered it, according to U.S. officials. The Houthis have shot down or hit about a half-dozen others since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023 and claim to have downed another over the weekend.

The Pentagon did not respond directly to questions about Iran aiding the Houthis in shooting down drones, instead referring NBC News to a Defense Intelligence Agency report from February highlighting Iran’s support for the Houthis.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council said, "We’ve repeatedly called out Iran publicly and privately for their support to the Houthis, and will continue to work with our allies and partners to ensure the safety of our personnel and capabilities in the region. We also continue to engage partners, including at the United Nations, to condemn these actions and hold the Houthis accountable."

In recent years, U.S. adversaries have been able to jam the communication link between the MQ-9 drone and its operators back on land. The U.S. communicates with the drones via satellite, so when that communication link between the aircraft and the satellite is jammed, operators can no longer control the drone. It can go off course and even crash, and can also become an easier target for hostile fire.

The Russians have been using this tactic against U.S. drones over Eastern Europe and Syria for some time. The interference severely inhibits the U.S. ability to gather intelligence and increases the chance that the drones could drift into unfriendly airspace. In many cases the drones have drifted off course for a bit but then returned safely to base.

Michael Knights of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy says the Houthis have improved their air defense systems with better weapons in recent months, many coming from Iran, upping their ability to hit U.S. targets with accurate fire.

“We know the Houthis have been developing stronger air defenses,” he told NBC News. He said the new and upgraded missiles and systems that the Houthis have obtained from Iran include the 358 and SA-2 surface-to-air missiles, both of which can take down a Reaper or other drone.

The U.S. military has struggled to stop some Houthi air defense systems because rather than radars, the Houthis often use electro-optical systems to find targets. They have no radar signature and are harder to detect.

“The Houthis and the Iranians went electro-optical, because it is a completely passive system. It’s hard to hunt those things down because they don’t really have any signature before launch,” Knights said.

The 358 missiles are “the weapon of choice to be handed out” to Iranian proxy groups like the Houthis, he said.

Knights also said the Houthis have effectively denied the U.S. Navy and many commercial ships the ability to operate in the Red Sea, given the high risk from Houthi anti-ship ballistic missiles and surface-to-air missiles.

“They denied us the Red Sea as a place to do carrier ops,” Knights said.

Iran sent a spy ship to the waters near Yemen to help the Houthis target ships in the Red Sea. NBC News was first to report that the U.S. conducted a cyberattack against the ship to inhibit its ability to share intelligence with the rebel group.

It appears the U.S. plan to interdict shipments of Iranian weapons and destroy stockpiles of weapons and drones has failed to roll back Houthi attacks on cargo ships, Knights said.

“They’re resupplying faster than we can destroy them,” he said.

You think Israel would be so bold if they didn't have the full backing of the US? I wouldn't be surprised if we were the ones silently encouraging them while publicly denouncing their actions.

What he’s saying it kinda true the bombing everything but what you saying is the other half of the equation

Without backing Israelis probably would be erased from the map

Egypt don’t like them
The Saudis don’t trust them
Iran view them as worthless
Lebanese have faught them and won

You take Jewish Washington backing away and what do you have?

If we’re honest they having trouble with Hamas and their limited and enclave in Gaza

You're forcing ppl out, most with nowhere to go and limited means to be able to move......

And say you do "eradicate" Hamas and get the hostages free...... will the displaced Palestinians be welcomed / allowed back to their homes and land?

Hell no they wont.......

Fuck Bibi this isn't about Hamas and Hezbollah or any of that. The news want all of Palestine gone so they can regain control of "Israel" and trigger the return of the messiah....... so they think

“Similar to what is happening in Syria, Israeli army has begun to bombard Lebanese territory. During the last three days, the number of victims has risen to almost five hundred, while the number of wounded has exceeded one thousand five hundred (not counting those who suffered the attacks of the search engines last week). Lebanese began to flee to the north of the country.
The Israeli army has lost momentum in Gaza. The infrastructure of the Palestinian militias has been greatly destroyed, but this has not succeeded in eliminating guerrilla activity. Unable to maintain an endless asymmetric war in the strip, the IDF is now heading north to open a new front against Hezbollah by invading an internationally recognized country.
It is clear that Netanyahu needs to keep the attention of citizens on external conflicts and thus cover up the deep internal crisis that the State of Israel is suffering. Even if the war reaches regional dimensions.”

The US administration is sending additional troops to the Middle East as tensions rise in the region.

Their numbers are not being disclosed, Pentagon press secretary Patrick Ryder told TASS.

Those tunnels are too deep, even this kind of bomb can't help them

by following Iran's model no conventional weapon can effectively destroy those tunnels you need nukes !

They won't be happy until they annihilate Palestinians and repurpose their lands. And the world will stand by and put in bids on the real estate once it's opened for sale.

Dawg, they selling parts of the West Bank all ready.

Some folks (I think in Canada) came under pressure for advertising that shit

Same playbook as the Canadian First Peoples, US Natives, Blacks post Reconstruction-Jim Crowe up to present day gentrification and raised property taxes pushing folks out of homes, Aboriginals in Australia, etc. Throw Ireland in there as well, China-Japan, Russia, South Africa. Realist politics...might makes right.

Don't get me started, I'm supposed to be working in this capitalist economy right now, not watching TMNT and posting on BGOL

Dawg look at this shit, if these freedom fighters can return the Golan Heights back Syria

“Israeli Media Outlet Haaretz:

The army is anxiously following the arrival of about 40,000 from Syria, Iraq and Yemen to the Golan Heights and awaiting Nasrallah's call to fight.

According to the same outlet:

- Although the 40,000 fighters are not elite, the situation is still worrying.

- The presence of fighters is dangerous and we will intervene in Syria to make it clear to Assad that we will not accept their presence in this place”

Israel kills Hezbollah commander in Beirut, vows more airstrikes

September 24, 20242:16 PM CDTUpdated an hour ago
BEIRUT/JERUSALEM, Sept 24 (Reuters) - An Israeli airstrike on Beirut killed a senior Hezbollah commander on Tuesday as cross-border rocket attacks by both sides increased fears of a full-fledged war in the Middle East.

Israel's military said the airstrike on the Lebanese capital killed Ibrahim Qubaisi, who it said was the commander of Hezbollah's missile and rocket force. Two security sources in Lebanon described him as a leading figure in the Iran-backed group's rocket division.

Israel's military later said the airforce also conducted "extensive strikes" on Hezbollah targets across southern Lebanon, including weapons storage facilities and dozens of launchers that were aimed at Israeli territory.

"Hezbollah today is not the same Hezbollah we knew a week ago. (It) has suffered a sequence of blows to its command and control, its fighters, and the means to fight," Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said, adding the strikes would continue.

"These are all severe blows," he told Israeli troops.

Lebanon reported 569 people had been killed and 1,835 wounded since Israel launched heavy strikes on Monday morning, including 50 children, Health Minister Firass Abiad told Al Jazeera Mubasher TV.

Hezbollah said it launched rockets on Tuesday at the Dado military base in northern Israel and attacked the Atlit naval base south of Haifa with drones, among other targets. The Israeli military said sirens sounded in the early evening in the northern city of Safed, where Dado is located, and nearby areas. It did not say whether the base was hit.

Israel's new offensive against Hezbollah has stoked fears that nearly a year of conflict between Israel and the militant Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza could destabilise the Middle East.
At the U.N., U.S. President Joe Biden sought to calm Mideast tensions. "Full-scale war is not in anyone's interest, even if a situation has escalated, a diplomatic solution is still possible," he told the 193-member U.N. General Assembly.
Israel is shifting its focus from Gaza to the northern frontier, where Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israel in support of Hamas, which is also backed by Iran.
A map of Israel's airstrikes on Lebanon from Sep. 21-23.
Israel wants to secure its northern border and allow displaced residents to return. This has set the stage for a long conflict, while Hezbollah has said it will not back down until a ceasefire is reached in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Israel's U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon said Israel was open to ideas for de-escalating the conflict in Lebanon. "We are not eager to start any ground invasion anywhere... We prefer a diplomatic solution," he told reporters.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Lebanese citizens to reject Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

"Our war is not with you, our war is with Hezbollah. Nasrallah is leading you to the brink of the abyss," Netanyahu said at an Israeli army base.

The Israeli military said it found ammunition in Lebanese people's homes. Israel has accused Hezbollah of hiding its weapons in homes and villages in Lebanon, allegations the Lebanese group denies.

'A VERY DIFFICULT WAR'

Israel struck the Hezbollah-controlled area of Beirut for a second consecutive day. The Lebanese health ministry said at least six people were killed and 15 wounded when a building in the Ghobeiry neighbourhood of Beirut was struck.

Lebanese environment minister Nasser Yassin said 27,000 people were registered as displaced by the bombing campaign launched by Israel on Monday.

"We felt as if we were in a war, a very difficult war," said Rima Ali Chahine, 50, speaking at a makeshift shelter for displaced people at a Beirut college.

"Maybe it didn't take us long on the road, but families are now arriving who have been stuck on the roads since yesterday - 15 or 16 hours on the roads."

The casualties and the intensity of the attacks by the most powerful and advanced military in the Middle East have spread panic in Lebanon, but also defiance among people who recall the devastating Israel-Hezbollah war in 2006.

"We are waiting for victory, God willing, because as long as we have a neighbour like Israel, we can’t sleep safely," said Beirut resident Hassan Omar.

CALLS FOR DIPLOMACY

Calls for diplomacy are growing as the conflict worsens, with UN human rights chief Volker Turk urging all states and actors with influence to avert further escalation in Lebanon.
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told MSNBC that he believed "a path forward" could still be found to de-escalation and a diplomatic solution.

The fighting has raised fears that the United States, Israel's close ally, and regional power Iran, which has proxies across the Middle East - Hezbollah, Yemen's Houthis and armed groups in Iraq - will be sucked into a wider war.

Hezbollah last week suffered heavy losses when thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies used by its members exploded.
The operation was widely attributed to Israel, which has a long history of sophisticated attacks on foreign soil. It has not confirmed or denied responsibility.

To sum this up :

- Gaza -> Hamas
- Lebanon -> Hezbollah
- Syria -> the UN of militant groups from the middle East (Syria, Iraq, Houthis ...etc)

We already know how the Hezbollah and the Hamas fight, if true Syria is going to be interesting cuz all groups have at least a decade long experience in civil war, they don't need to be an elite force they have skills !
