How I view the list...but to each his own.

No oversized jeans or shirts (I am grown...I wear clothes that fit)
No head gear (don't wear caps inside anyway)
No ball caps (see above)
No work boots (don't own a pair)
No gym sneakers (rarely wear sneaks unless working out)
No shorts or athletic apparel (I have nice shorts....linen...cotton, Houston is hot; but I don't even think about wearing to some spots)
No sweatpants or cargos (do we really have to be told this)
No jogger pants (see above)
No oversized jewelry/chains (WTF??? is this 1987?)
No sleeveless shirts (lol....niccas still wearing muscle shirts?)
No sunglasses (silliest shit ever...my wife and I see a clown walking around inside with shades on and crack the fuck up)
No camouflage (no shit....p.s. this just ain't for white folk...I think Rhianna or someone wears it and now I see more and more fly sistas wearing it and making it look good, but it is for casual events)
No low or baggy pants (please let this 'trend' be over)
No headphones (smh....really, wearing headphones like a fashion accessory....follow the leader type shit)
Belts must be worn with pants (I agree....unless your shirt is untucked; then they don't know anyway)

And which of these only apply to black folk?

I understand applying the rules in a discriminatory manner is fucked up...but I am not talking about that. What I am asking is what on this list concerns anyone going out for a nice evening with their lady?

If this place was located in Manhatten, I'd just think it's an upscale spot where escorts can link up with rich tricks afterhours. But in Jersey City, this sign basically just says "no ******* allowed".

jersey city is real low key racist as fuck..

but if you work in the financial district by the waterfront..

and look like you have money..

you can go wherever you want... but that letter was to make sure nobody from them projects around journal square gets thirsty and wants to stop in for a drink..

so yea its racist..

Messed up part?

they probably got one of those city grants to open the damn restaurant

Using tax payers money for this sh*t

Even without a grant. The people they kick out still pay taxes the fund the fire department that stops them from burning down, The Police department which keeps the till safe, the health inspector which keeps the food safe etc.

it is a crime to deny people access to the businesses that they pay for. It needs to be illegal as well

I am not 18 so requiring somebody to dress like they are grown isn't an issue...

There are black bars in Chicago that have the same type of requirements so stop with the white boys do this and that shit.

If that is a white bar why you trying to go in the first place?

I can't stand the complaints about white businesses and white neighborhoods cause your want to belong ass shouldn't be taking your money there.

You take your money there every time you fill out a W-2

What's funny is that business casual is broad as hell and this list is total bullshit. So for example all of these are sneakers but you see people in business casual wearing them constantly.

So what they're really saying is someone wearing a button down and those will be let in but if you rocking a polo and Jordans suddenly you won't meet the criteria....unless of course you're white cause then your polo and Jordans suddenly will be OK.

They used to try this shit at a bar in the Village called Fat Black Pussycat and I've seen many a time ppl get into huge arguments. I once saw they try to tell a Hispanic client of one of my friends that he couldn't get in cause he was wearing a t-shirt. The fact that it was under a $800 blazer suddenly didn't matter.

Fuck all these places...dont give them your money.

guess you can apply this logic during the civil rights era to

no colored allowed to drink from this fountain..you: I carry my own water bottle anyway plus who drinks tap water

colored sit in the back of the bus... You: more leg room in the back anyway plus I rather drive my car or ride my bike

No colored allowed in this resturant... You: I'm on a strict diet so no fast food for me anyway

No colored allowed in this club... You: I prefer house warming parties and bbqs

You: I don't see how the 60s were racist

A bar and a dress code dont mix. If it was a club/ultralounge, then yeah I kinda understand. But the problem is, the rules are easily bendable and breakable depending on who is at the door.

Complete and utter bullshit.

In the 60's I could get arrested for drinking from a white water fountain.
I could get arrested for refusing go sit in the back of the bus.
I could get arrested for trying to sit in a white only restaurant.
I could get arrested for trying to enter a white only club.
The 60's were racist as fuck....bruh, I was born in 1964...for that matter the 70's were racist as fuck tooooo.

You agree with the club more than I do.

They think they can keep black folk out by a dress code that does not allow sagging baggy pants with your ass hanging out, big ass chains, ball caps and tennis shoes, etc. They think only black folk wear that stuff, so if they don't allow that stuff, black folk can't meet the dress code. Apparently so do you. I don't look at that dress code and see black folk, you do....just like the bar owners.

There are very few names that I see on this site that I recognize from the time I have been here....I just don't get into personalities like that. BUT, your name is one that I have come to recognize and associate with common sense and wisdom.

I am saddened and distraught that you have missed the point of this one....I will be watching you @tallblacknyc. LOL

Anyway, all I am saying is that when I see that list I don't see black....I had to represent clients in court today and I could have easily left the courtroom and gone straight there for happy hour with every other black lawyer I kicked it with today......

Now, like I said, if the code is being enforce in a discriminatory manner, that is another thing....but that isn't what I am talking about.

That's how they whitened all the clubs in San Francisco.

The only difference was that instead of saying business casual only, they get a bit more direct and say no ghetto people. once that happens the only Black people you find at these clubs are security.

I even had one owner tell me that he would rather close down on a Friday night then let "those people" at his spot. Fucked up part is that "those people" used to line up around the block to get in.

Another bar up and fired me and all of their Black staff (except security) and replaced the DJ booth with a grand piano. Crazy part was most of their clientele were white Twitter employees, but even that wasn't white enough.

I see this as occupational genocide because in the Bay Area the nightlife business is one of the few that is dominated, or at least heavily populated with Black owners, managers and promoters.

Wow...those guys look soooo cooooool. I want to dress like them when I grow up...lol.

I have a few pair of the raggedy $400.00 jeans....my wife calls them my 'fashion' jeans....I wear them with the funky shirt, funky blazer, nice belt and suede shoes.....BUT, just because I got damn near 2k dollars worth of clothes when I dress like that, doesn't mean they are appropriate every damn where I go.

I had a client come to court with some raggedy fashion jeans on and I lit his ass up. His response was that he had on $500 jeans....my response was "do you think that peckawood on the bench or prosecuting your ass gives a fuck. You know what patna, actually they do give a fuck. You're charged with delivery and you are doing your best to look like the stereotypical drug dealer...$500 dollar jeans and no fucking job."

Mom: Boy, you ready for church yet?
Me: Yes ma'am, here I am.
Mom: What the hell do you have on?
Me: These are $500 dollar jeans....(pointing to my holy, not int he Christian sense, jeans)
Mom: And I am about to give you $500 hundred dollars worth of an ass whooping if you don't change into some got damned church clothes.

Can you name some of these establishments? Are you speaking of the ones in the city only or San Jose and Oakland as well?

This reminds me of the Boondocks episode when Granddad would wear a raincoat and carry and umbrella expecting the man to spray him with a fire hose when participating in a march.

The one that explicitly banned "ghetto people" was OMG in SF.

The one that fired all their black staff except security was Oddjob in SF.

I can't speak on San Jose with any authority, but I know that Oakland is even worse when it comes to purging Black clubs. One of their weapons was a policy where any club that had a police incident would have to pay for the officer's time.

While this policy might make sense on the surface, the way it was applied was racist. For instance, the owner of the Silk Road, a black club near Jack London square, also owned a share in a public parking lot. One night there was a shooting at the lot and the owner was fined into bankruptcy even though neither the victim or the assailant had been at the club that night.

guess you missed the part of them denying black men who literally abide by the dress code and still got denied and women who broke the code and still got in
I missed that part, because I was about to say it's just a dress code. If it's just used on blacks then they are racist as fuck.
the other dude does have a point about it being just a dress code in general, but we all know in the US rules can be weaponized against people of colour.
I live in Barbados, back in the day there was a club here that had a heavy dress code when it first opened. Similar to the one mentioned, but also with no untucked shirts, no uncombed hair. but for us here, we are 95% black. so it wasn't too keep blacks out.
back to the US, truth is, if a club is keeping the brothers out based on skinn, I wouldn't give them my money. furthermore they need some competition (black owned) that has just as nice a vibe and accepts all. put them racist out of biz

To be honest, I've been to a couple establishments run by Black people that have a similar dress code.

The problem is selective enforcment. If they're letting white people who violate the dress code while keeping Black people out, then that's racist.

I could also see that this dress code could be there to attract an older, more "upscale" clientele (whatever that means).

I can understand wanting to establish an upper class restaurant. But then you also must decide what's more important, a restaurant with full cash register draws or a business with little to no customers.

See putting white only signs up are frowned on today.

But I wouldn't eat there if they paid me.

It's a well rounded list that allows them to discriminate against anyone they see fit. Obviously, they're targeting black people. It would be like having a sign that said "no blacks allowed" to any person of color that reads that.

I could go there...i dont wear none of that shit and wouldnt go to club if i looked in and saw the crowd dressed like that either..

When i was in my teens and 20's different story tho...so i can understand it being discriminatory
