iPhone 5s outsold Samsung’s Galaxy S5

Not exactly true. Apple provides the movies set and cast free products such as iPad, iPhones and Macs so in away they are paying.

Every company allocates product to give away for free. That's standard operating procedure. But companies have budgets to PAY to have placement in tv and movies. Apple DOES NOT do this. So my statement is true. You are incorrect. It is not the same thing. Watch any music video. Whenever you see any product - 99% of the time that placement is paid for unless it's the artist's brand or if it's an Apple product.

I-phones will always sell, ask yourself this question, have you ever seen a homo who didn't have an Iphone... Between them and chicks, man they will always sell.

Doesn't matter if Apple out sold Samsung, Samsungs phones are part of a larger ecosystem, and that ecosystem is crushing apple and taking market share away from them, still.

This article is technically about Windows phone, but there is a nice chart at the bottom...

How exactly is being a part of Googles' ecosystem profitable to Samsung?

Googles ecosystem = search
Apples ecosystem = content & apps

Google & Apple control flows of information, samsung just makes hardware.

How is the Samsung Tizen mobile OS doing for them?

Well, based on this article, it is on hold indefinitely...do to lack of apps.

Apps are what make the phones, and that belongs to the Android ecosystem. Which Samsung is a big player in as well and makes lots of money from. An ecosystem that is still growing.

You're comparing software to hardware, when the debate is about hardware. Apple makes boatload more money when a phone with it's operating system on it sells than google makes when Android sells.

As I said in my last post, software drives hardware sales.

You can even see it in the PC market. Windows releases a new OS, PC hardware sales spike. In between releases it slows back down.

When you can buy an Android phone for $39 bucks brand new at Walmart without a contract... to use those software proliferation metrics that include such phones to say that Apple is losing market share (it's relevant market is high end phones) is just not a fair and balanced analysis.

Growing and making money for Google, not Samsung.

Samsung is in the hardware business and they're burning through billions of dollars to keep the #1 Android spot and compete against Apple.

If Samsung Mobile were a separate company from Samsung they would have gone bankrupt by now.

There is no long term money in hardware, especially not the way that Samsung goes about creating 10+ variations of the same device.

The Korean electronics giant, which posted a 25 percent drop in operating profits, says the second half of 2014 "will remain a challenge" as price competition in smartphones hurts profitability.

Samsung on Wednesday posted a 25 percent drop in second-quarter operating profits, marking the third straight quarter of profit declines as competition heats up in the smartphone market.

The South Korean electronics giant also warned the second half of 2014 would "remain a challenge" as competition in the mobile market leads to lower device prices and hurts its results.

"Prospects for growth remain unclear as competition over global market share intensifies in the mobile industry," the company said in a press release. "Samsung expects to see its sales of mobile devices increase with the rollout of flagship products and new models, but profitability may suffer due to a heated race over price and product specifications."

At the same time, Samsung said it will focus on releasing "new premium mobile devices, and a new flagship model in the large screen category, along with new mid-to-low-end models with more advanced features and competitive pricing" to address what's expected to be stronger seasonal demand later this year. And it plans to introduce "a more diverse product portfolio" in wearables, a market that's expected to grow.

"Samsung will solidify its smartphone market leadership by further strengthening its product portfolio and leveraging its differentiated technologies and design," the company said.

Even with those numbers, Apple makes more money on smartphones than Samsung does.

And to corporations, profit is all that matters.

Not really, because their chips may not fall under the same heading as their phone division, and for every I-phone that gets sold, Samsung gets a profit on it...

Samsung pays Microsoft $15 per Android device sold.

Apple is also distancing itself from Samsung, it will take some time though.

Samsung still has to pay Apple that lawsuit so Apple got a big ass credit balance.

Samsung Mobile is costing Samsung money.

Apple is giving Samsung the cold shoulder. It's inked a deal with a different chip-maker to provide innards to its gadgets like the iPhone. But it'll still have to rely on Samsung for the time being.

The fierce rivals will have to work together well into next year, as Apple's deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) doesn't start until 2014, the Wall Street Journal reports. According to an exec from TSMC, Samsung will remain the primary supplier to Apple until then. The two will have to let bygones be bygones, and try to pretend all those lawsuits they keep slapping each other with aren't happening.

The deal with TSMC was discussed as early as 2010. Apple initially wanted to work together to make the chips, but this was rejected by TSMC, as it wanted to keep its independence. The partnership was delayed repeatedly, beset by glitches preventing the chips from meeting Apple's speed and power standards.

Apple wants to break free from Samsung, seeing as the two are now arch rivals. The Korean company has enjoyed a stratospheric rise of late, and is now the biggest seller of smart phones in the world , with its flagship Galaxy S4 selling even faster than the S3.

Apple been trying to find another chip maker, but even if they were to find one they would still be just as fucked, because they would be dependent on the next chip maker who's goods may not only be inferior, but also they may play hard ball on them due to not too many places for them to run..

So Samsung doesn't make money when it sells the phones? :hmm:

It costs them $265 per Galaxy S5 phone, and they sell them for $600.
http://www.cnet.com/news/galaxy-s5-costs-around-256-to-build-says-teardown-report/

As of late last year Samsung made up 63% of all Android devices sold.
http://bgr.com/2013/11/08/samsung-android-devices-market-share/

Samsung is pretty much the premiere device manufacturer for Android devices and they more than double there money for every device sold. They had a dip the first part of this year because everyone is waiting on the Note 4. Profit decline is also not the same as an operating loss either. They didn't lose money, they just didnt make as much as the year before.

What you say is true. But not the entire puzzle. Both Apple ans Samsung are making money, but no other Android manufacturer is making any profit.

http://appleinsider.com/articles/13...industry-profits-while-competitors-lose-money

The latest data from Canaccord Genuity, shared with AppleInsider by analyst T. Michael Walkley on Thursday, estimates that Apple took 56 percent of the operating profits for feature phones and smartphones in the third quarter of calendar 2013. Coming in close second was Samsung, which took 53 percent of industry profits.

In contrast, all of the competition lost money, with the exception of Sony, which broke even during the quarter. The biggest loser was struggling BlackBerry, which represented a negative 4 percent of industry profits, followed closely by Google-owned Motorola, taking negative 3 percent.

Nokia, LG and HTC were all about even with one another, each representing negative 1 percent of mobile profits, according to Canaccord Genuity.

Walkley noted that the share controlled by Apple and Samsung is likely lower when the profits of Chinese vendors such as Lenovo, ZTE, Huawei and Coolpad are included. However, Chinese manufacturer profitability data is not available, and could not be included in the industry-wide comparison.

Apple actually saw its share of profits increase from 53 percent in the second quarter to 56 percent in the third quarter, despite the fact that the company was transitioning to the launch of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c late in the quarter. Walkley said Apple's greater share of profits came to slightly higher sequential iPhone unit sales, as well as more pronounced losses from BlackBerry and HTC.

"Given a full quarter of iPhone 5s/5c sales, we anticipate very strong operating profit share for Apple during the holiday quarter," the analyst wrote. "Further, we believe Apple's value share of the handset market is even higher than our estimates... considering Apple's dominant share of the tablet market, as some Android OEMs include tablet sales in reported smart device sales and profits."

In fact, when tablets, notebooks and other mobile devices are included, Apple earned more than Samsung, LG, Nokia, Huawei, Lenovo and Motorola's mobile divisions combined, according to separate data released last month by Strategy Analytics.

Concentrating on phones alone, Apple and Samsung are estimated to have accounted for more than 100 percent of industry profits for some time now. Prior to Thursday's data, the most recent figures from July showed the rival companies accounting for 103 percent of industry profits.

That is the cost of the hardware in the device.

They spend billions on advertising, not to mention the lawsuits they lost to Apple and the money they have to pay Microsoft per device sold.

http://bgr.com/2013/11/28/samsung-2013-marketing-budget/

Why are Samsung’s smartphones so dominant in the market when companies such as HTC, Nokia and LG have all released smartphones in the last year that are just as good if not better? A big reason is Samsung’s enormous marketing budget that drills images of Galaxy smartphones into consumers’ heads while crowding out its rivals’ devices. According to Reuters, Samsung’s marketing Death Star has spent an estimated $14 billion in 2013, an amount that’s greater than the entire gross domestic product of Iceland. If Reuters‘ estimate is right, it means that Samsung has more than tripled the roughly $4 billion it spent on marketing in 2012 and that it has spent more than quadruple what Microsoft and Apple together spent on marketing last year.

As of late last year Samsung made up 63% of all Android devices sold.

What different does that matter if it isn't profitable?

Selling Android devices isn't profitable for the long term when you have so much competition.

You're trying to argue market share vs profitability.
