Immigration comes at a devastating cost to Black Americans

T. Willard Fair

Congress continues to relentlessly push immigration policies that’ll make Black Americans poorer.

That’s not their stated goal, of course. But that’ll nevertheless be the end result of their proposal to amnesty millions of illegal immigrants and boost the level of legal immigration. The lasting effects of uncontrolled, mass immigration on Black Americans are plainly obvious and have been well-documented throughout our country’s history. So how can any Black politician in good conscience advocate for a more expansive immigration policy that would continue to do us harm?

Don’t listen to those who say we supporters of immigration reduction want to put an end to it or that we’re “anti-immigrant.” They’re only trying to shut down the debate. For decades I have worked to help welcome and assimilate immigrants in Miami, a city with one of the largest foreign-born populations in the U.S.

I have also tried to convince our Black leaders that our immigration policy needs to be primarily focused on the well-being of those of us already here — those of us they supposedly represent and whose vote they rely on to stay in office.

By many measures, the economic gap between Black and white workers has gotten worse in recent years. In 1970, for instance, Black men earned 59% as much as white men. By 2019, that figure had dipped to 56%. For decades, unemployment rates among Black Americans have consistently been about double those for white Americans.

There is no single explanation for these racial disparities, of course. But decades of mass immigration have almost certainly made the problem worse.

Consider the years 1940 to 1980 — a period of comparatively lower immigration that generally led to tight labor markets. As immigration policy expert Roy Beck points out in his new book “Back of the Hiring Line,” Black men saw their real incomes increase four-fold during those decades. Black men’s earnings actually rose faster than white men’s.

During that same time period, the share of Black Americans who were considered “middle class” exploded, growing from 22% to 71%.

Had these trends continued, it’s hard to imagine racial disparities in earnings and employment persisting for much longer — certainly not to the degree we see today. But progress among Black workers leveled off starting around 1970, five years after Congress passed laws that significantly increased rates of immigration, from roughly 250,000 per year in the middle of the 20th century to over 1 million annually today.

Whereas immigrants accounted for just 4.7% of the population in 1970, they now make up over 13.7% — an almost three-fold increase. Many immigrants are indeed hard-working and law-abiding, but the sheer number of newcomers entering the U.S. labor market year after year has created new economic barriers for low-skilled American workers — especially for Black Americans.

Indeed, as the supply of less-educated labor increased due to immigration, competition for jobs requiring a high school degree or less became much greater. And Black Americans suffered disproportionality.

A 2006 paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research estimates that the influx in immigration between 1980 and 2000 “reduced the wage of Black high school dropouts by 8.3 percent, reduced the employment rate by 7.4 percentage points, and increased the incarceration rate by 1.7 percentage points.”

Folks on the left used to find this disparate impact disturbing. President Bill Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisers plainly warned that “immigration has increased the relative supply of less-educated labor and appears to have contributed to the increasing inequality of income.”

But many of them either no longer realize that immigration has negative consequences — or no longer care. Many Black lawmakers in Congress are working to grant amnesty to over 6 million illegal aliens — a number that would likely be much higher — a move that’d immediately increase labor market competition and encourage more people to come here illegally in the hopes of future amnesties. Black lawmakers also want to increase the number of green cards available for legal immigrants.
The Congressional Black Caucus has endorsed amnesty and an increase in annual immigration. Why? The CBC has put forward no reasonable explanation. Its members haven’t made a case for how increasing immigration will benefit Black Americans.

As my friend Roy Beck told me, economic history demonstrates that every time immigration levels have risen significantly, inequality has grown as well. The reverse is also true. So ask yourselves, why are so many Black politicians in D.C. intent on increasing immigration yet so adamantly opposed to even having a debate about reducing it?

It’s undeniable that mass immigration has come at a substantial cost to Black Americans. That doesn’t mean that immigrants don’t deserve our compassion, or that immigration is the sole cause of racial disparities in our nation.

It simply means that if we want to create a fairer economy, we can no longer ignore immigration’s unique contribution to racial inequality.

:smh: It's just common sense. Party first bootlickers played their own folks. Sad. Crazy that this entire piece didn't even mention H1B. Didn't even cover the explosion of Asian doctors from 1960 to now.

Community got fucked over so bad from immigration that a short article can't even touch all the points. And folks still got the nerve to use the world 'migrants'. FOH.

No one is going to wake up. All the bootlickers going to do is say being anti-immigrant is MAGA shit and problem solved. The white leftists will give them all their talking points.

CBC? What a joke. Congressional Boolicking Commitee. The fail is legendary with them. Fail ain't happening quick enough for them so they want to increase annual immigration.

I feel like NAFTA policies played a bigger part in decimating the black middle class than immigration..... if you want to associate that to democratic policy I can see an argument there
So the lack of manufacturing in this country had nothing to do with it ?

The well paying jobs that were available straight from HS with no college required. The jobs that black folks could get and stay with until retirement.

The attack on public sector union jobs that hired black people and was a big part of the black middle class. Public sector unions that followed the laws and provided inclusion.

The private sector unions that still do not hire black people have grown and now do the work in the public sectors because of the public sector cut backs.

Not to mention the policies that are quick to add black people to the roles of the limited options because of "criminal records" that prohibit them being hired in many occupations that provide financial stability and mobility

Great thread!
That is a ghost town. :smh: Since the party is pro-illegals, pro-open borders, pro-immigration, so are the followers.

Just imagine when people from hunders of years in the future study this shit.

@VAiz4hustlaz you study history. We all know immigrants coming in and eating folks lunch has been going on since forever. Way before cacs came to the west. Before guns were a thing. But can you recall any example in history that went to shit this fast? Europe and Asia kept the best records and have had many cases of immigrants coming in at the expense of people already there, but I can't think of anything that happened this fast without an actual war.

IMHO we set a record as a community we didn't want to set and folks still avoid addressing the topic. :smh:

Well, I think they're being covertly allowed in as a cheap labor force to supplement the aging white American population with the belief that they or their children can be assimilated.

But it's unfortunate how few black "leaders" aren't pushing back on this. And you echoed what Claude Anderson has said.........we've gone from 2nd-class citizenship to 4th-class! :smh:

I think more and more of our people are waking up to the BS. How much? I'm not sure.

I have to remind myself that BGOL isn't a real place. In addition to everyone here being multi millionaire who have Dimes cleaning their toilets, they also can't be bothered by everyday Black people's issues and struggles as they personally donate 1000s of dollars to the DNC who are making sure that their faggotry is normalized.

The overwhelming majority of illegal immigrants in the United States are people who came here legally, but had their visa expire while they were applying for permanent residence. Often they have work permits while their case is pending.

Others are part of the DACA program which means they already have work permits.

So no, granting amnesty to 6 million illegal immigrants would not cause a disruption in the labor market because most of them are already employed.

I would also like to point out that Roy Beck, the author quoted in the peace, is a white man who used to belong to an organization the SPLC considers a hate group.

The 6 million refers to those who have entered illegally since the beginning of Biden's administration.

the majority of black democratic boot lickers feel they're above the immigrants and that's usually education, what they seem to forget is that it's not how you start but how you finish so they see nothing wrong with immigration, when the immigrants come here structured and start hustling and getting advancements financially then they complain.

My point has always been structure, the coons seem to always move away from that and see nothing wrong with every man or woman for themselves, the truth is most educated people come from usually educated homes and the coons for some reason are against structure, they have a very indendpent mindset.

It's all fun and games until the immigrants get enough power to change how a city spends money, change how the government of a city gives out money then the accountants that work for a big company are fired since the immigrants got a homie to do it for cheap, this happens alot in South Florida cuz the cubans network like crazy here, lot of educated black folks been let go regardless of position or education.

When it gets real they'll listen but for now the democrats and GOP do a good jobs of painting immigrants are the people that will do jobs americans won't so most black americans aren't even threatened but once they start getting educated and changing how that dollar is spent you'll see alot more kickback

but by then it will probably be too late.

The Legend

1. Black immigrants are a significant group in the United States—more than 3 million people comprising 8 percent of the U.S. foreign-born population. More than half come from the Caribbean, with the rest mostly coming from Northern and sub-Saharan Africa. A small number also come from Europe and Canada. Black immigrants account for more than one-quarter of the black population in New York, Boston, and Miami.

2. Black immigrants arrive in the United States through multiple pathways. Most black immigrants—especially those from the Caribbean—arrive as legal permanent residents based on their family ties. Refugees from Ethiopia, Somalia, Liberia, Sudan, and Eritrea accounted for 30 percent of all black African immigrants in 2009, while around one-fifth of black African immigrants entered the United States through the diversity visa lottery program—which provides 55,000 visas each year to countries underrepresented in immigrant streams to the United States. Around 400,000 black immigrants in the United States are here without legal status.

3. Black immigrants are one of the most-educated immigrant groups. Black immigrants have more college education and higher rates of degree attainment than any other immigrant group in the United States.

4. Black immigrants face many challenges in the United States. Even with high levels of education, black immigrants tend to earn low wages compared to other similarly trained immigrant or native workers. In 2011 black immigrants had the highest unemployment rate—12.5 percent—of any foreign-born group in the United States. Proposed immigration reforms such as reductions in family-based admissions and elimination of the diversity visa lottery could affect the flow of black immigrants to the United States, cutting off all legal means of entry into the country.

5. Despite the challenges they face, black immigrants are stepping up in support of immigration reform. Despite the risk of deportation by coming out as undocumented, several young black immigrants—such as Tolu Olubunmi, who was born in Nigeria and came to the United States at age 14—are fighting for passage of the DREAM Act. Haitian Americans in Miami also came out in large numbers last year to protest U.S. immigration policies that favor groups such as Cuban migrants—allowing, for example, any Cuban who makes it onto American soil to stay—but discriminate against Haitians seeking asylum in the United States.

The six million stat is based on a CBP estimate. But the author of this article is using it WAY out of context.

For starters, he assumes that all 6 million are willing and able to work. In reality most of them are children.

He also neglects to mention that customs and border patrol apprehended around 80% of that number. That means 4-5 million of them have either been turned away, detained, or have a legitimate asylum claim underway.

As far as Roy Beck goes, even if his stats are true why would I draw the same conclusions as a known White supremacist speaking on immigration reform?

For instance, this guy claimed that an influx of immigrants was responsible for raising the incarceration rate of black high school dropouts. It's probably true that the right went up, but what do immigrants have to do with it?

Lmao.... Americans are very weak and have no appetite for having an honest conversation about the economics of immigration (legal and "illegal"). Immigration was all good when it was it was chalky folks comin over with no laws on the books. When they set their shit up just right, it's all kinds of rules we should consider lol. But even then if you press folks about their unfair rules you'd be hard pressed to have an honest convo about how all this shit actually unfolds and how complicit we all are.

Typical CAC shit. No matter how much some of y'all wanna dress this shit up with an artificial melanin count

Black folks are 30 years behind the political curve.

I remember Ross Perot trying to make this case to black folx at the NAACP in '92.

He said something like how NAFTA would be terrible for 'you people'.
The only thing black folx heard was the 'you people' part, said he was racist,
then voted for Clinton after he played an Elvis song with his sax on Arsenio.

That MF went on to pass NAFTA, and it took this long for black people to realize how fucked up it was. 30 MF years too late!

This educated me on all I needed to know about the foolishness of black politics.
