Ice Cube Lands $100 Million NFL Pledge For Contract With Black America

The NFL is partnering with entertainer Ice Cube’s pact to aid Black-owned businesses and combat the growing wealth gap in America.

The league said it committed over $100 million to causes that assist Contract With Black America Institute, or CWBA, an initiative Cube launched with long-time media executive Jeff Kwatinetz during the 2020 presidential campaign. It calls for the NFL to steer more business to Black companies in various sectors, including consumer services and technology.

In a statement announcing the partnership, the NFL said it would concentrate on “increasing direct and indirect spend to national Black businesses to help close America’s racial and economic wealth gap.”

The contract’s “Sports Industry Economic Development Plan” requests that sports leagues and teams hire exclusively Black companies for food vendors in stadiums, including more Black manufacturers, production companies, and marketing and advertising agencies in league operations.

Jackson says he wants to add other sports leagues, including MLB and MLS, and says he has reached out to the NBA but hasn’t yet received a response. More than 73% of players in the NBA are black compared to 58% in the NFL, according to The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport.

“The NBA should be doing this without a doubt,” says Jackson. “They should not be ignoring us when it comes to this.”

The league didn’t return a Forbes request for comment to discuss the matter.

In March, Cube, whose birth is name O’Shea Jackson, added to CWBA’s terms to include a sports business plan. The 41-page document calls for professional leagues and college programs to enhance its pipeline of vendors and includes Black women-owned businesses. In a telephone interview with Forbes, Jackson called CWBA an “examination of the problems” surrounding the racial wealth gap, which he called it “one of our biggest issues in this country.”

The project was launched with a fanfare of controversy after Jackson met with then President Donald Trump, who pledged at the time to support CWBA. Jackson told Forbes that discussions with the league started last year, adding the NFL distributed funds to Black companies that include firms that would provide capital to Black businesses for growth. CityFirst/Broadway Bank, a Black-led bank with offices in California and Washington, D.C. and Chicago-based Ariel Investments received a portion of the funds. Ariel’s co-Chief Executive is Mellody Hobson, who became part-owner of the Denver Broncos in June.

The racial wealth gap has widened over the last 30 years, says research group Brookings Institution. Among median and mean family wealth, white families outpace Black families by more than $100,000, according to data published in a September 2020 Federal Reserve report.

“This is how we decided to attack the wealth gap by going after big companies like the NFL,” Jackson says.

Kwatinetz, who is a co-founder in media company BIG 3 with Jackson, told Forbes the group is aiming for Black businesses to obtain 25% of annual contracts for top NFL events like the Super Bowl. Qualified companies will be vetted and connected with the league to bid on agreements. Jackson said CWBA doesn’t collect fees or make revenue from arranging the partnerships.

“What we’re trying to do is inject Black businesses up and down the chain from technology to construction to maintenance,” Jackson says. “Our job is to find qualified companies, connect them to the NFL, and solidify a relationship. And then, make sure the relationship is working on both sides.”

In a statement, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called partnering with CWBA “critical.” He said Black businesses are vital to “our country’s economic prosperity,” and added companies “have not always had the opportunity for exponential growth.”

Jackson initially launched CWBA in August 2020 via a video on social media and after he faced backlash for meeting with Trump, which he dismisses as a “political thing.” He downplayed the narrative he supported the former president during his re-election campaign and said he’s met with both democrats and republicans about the plan.

“Our mission was always to talk to the public sector and try to get things done,” Jackson says. “We were going to spend our time going after the private sector and these businesses who make a lot of money off Black folks.”

The NFL’s partnership with CWBA comes as the league faces backlash about its approach to diversity. The NFL persists with its struggles to broaden the makeup of leadership, including at the head coaching level. In February, Pittsburgh Steelers assistant head coach Brian Flores filed a class-action lawsuit against the NFL and its 32 clubs, alleging racial discrimination in its hiring practices. And since Flores’ filing, the NFL changed its guidelines to require clubs to employ a woman or minority as an offensive coach starting in the 2022 season.

“This is how we decided to attack the wealth gap by going after big companies like the NFL.”

Ice Cube

Asked about the NFL’s long-term commitment to CWBA and if the league is using the initiative to repair its image, Jackson said the financial help isn’t a “one-time thing.” He added CWBA would add personnel to track partnerships with the NFL.

“They are helping,” Jackson says, “and no checks have bounced yet.”

I didn’t read all of it, but it sounds good. God knows the NFL should be doing more on that front, and the NFL got way too many brothers that coon imo. I respect the NBA and it’s players way more. But this is a good step.

They had their chance when Kapernick's situation was in full bloom.

They should have all kneeled, even the white boys. It wasn't about Kapernick it was about the players exerting power to get a better deal

But that mofokr in Dallas said they better be toe n the line and every mofokrs in the league punked.

Mofokrs won't sacrifice which it will take...Kurt Flood in MLB started the ball rolling. NBA mofokrs sacrificed to show their power in the league so now they have guaranteed contracts and shit.

NFL mofokrs ain't tying to sacrifice, they don't understand the long term and that is why they have a shit deal and are treated like shit

If Jayz is a sellout so is Cube.

If Cube is savvy then you gotta give JayZprops for opening the door so a mofokr like Ice Cube could get in to do what he do.

And don't come in here talking bout Ice Cube got the kind of clout to kick doors open by himself,,,,you stoopid.

I'm taking a Summer class right now, and it's talking about African-American Entrepreneurship.

Now different people have different views on how we can shorten the racial wealth gap. Some, like Malcolm X believed that we should segregate ourselves and "buy Black." The problem with this was Black people didn't buy enough Black goods to create a self sustaining Black economy.

Now, take Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson. He created a situation where he allowed whites to get big construction contracts, but they "had" to use some Black sub-contractors. 20% of the money "had" to go to a Black-owned business.

Some say, "Well, why didn't he just allow for Black contractors to receive the bulk of the money, and let them use white sub-contractors?" He did it the way he did it because there were no Black contractors large enough to handle the job at the time.

Now, I don't know Cube's motives; but, if it sends money to Black pockets... I take no issue with it.

We have a habit of criticizing anything a Black person does. "Oh, well he could have done this." Or, "Well, he's a coon because of yada yada yada!"

The man is trying to do something positive, I believe. What the Hell is your Senator, Representative, or President doing for you?

If Jay-Z is making a way for Black people to get paid, I'm with it. If Ice Cube is making a way for Black people to get paid, I'm with it. Hell, we need to be talking about how we can create businesses that will allow us to get in on some of this. There no reason why we (BGOL) can't put our heads together and come up with viable ideas that will help shorten the wealth gap. That's my 2 cents.

Watson's contract was a good start, but I think his will be a one & done for a long while with 100% guaranteed $$$$. The problem with the NFL is injuries & how physical the game is, you already see the NBA is starting to have a big problem with load management & dudes basically chilling on the bench with injuries that in some cases they could come back from.

It'll be interesting to see how the NBA's next CBA deals with load management (which is bs except in the cases of dudes coming back from serious injuries).

What are “black national businesses”?

I'm hopeful that this works out to benefit more than just a few connected individuals to provide the NFL some good PR. It is a lot of money, but not enough to make a real dent in the condition of a significant proportion of black people in this country. Perhaps that's not the goal, but I think it should be.

Uncle Nearest’s to easily name one, but in general a long list of national black brands. Just look at the black brands that have partnered with Target, Walmart & other retailers in recent years. Fuddruckers, also a national business doesn't have be in every state, just have the ability to do business or have products in the majority of the country.

Ice Cube’s alleged anti-Asian, anti-Semitic past resurfaces after news of NFL partnership

Critics have called attention to Ice Cube’s alleged anti-Asian and anti-Semitic past following the NFL’s announcement of its partnership with the rapper’s Contract With Black America (CWBA) Institute, an economic equity initiative.

The NFL, which has been aiming to boost its work with Black-owned businesses, announced the partnership on June 30. The collaboration is set to focus on “identifying league-wide opportunities in the financial, tech, and production sectors, with a concentration on increasing spending to Black business nationwide to help close America’s racial and economic wealth gap.”
The NFL has reportedly spent more than $125 million on Black businesses over the past year, including Ariel Investments, CityFirst/Broadway Bank, Cover Communications and Fearless Technology. Ice Cube said the league and his initiative have been working closely for more than a year already, though the announcement appears to mark the beginning of an official partnership.
“We feel like if you tackle the huge wealth gap between Black people and White people in this country, that should solve a lot of problems that's there,” Ice Cube, whose real name is O'Shea Jackson, told the “AP Pro Football Podcast” on June 30. “Our thing was to go after some of the biggest companies in the country that rely on Black consumers or Black workers, and the biggest one that we focused in on was the NFL.”

Aside from Ice Cube, CWBA is led by entertainment lawyer and his longtime business partner Jeff Kwatinetz, as well as advisors Ja'Ron Smith and Chris Pilkerton.
As a prominent artist, Ice Cube is the face of their initiative. For this reason, critics were quick to remind the public of his history of targeting Jewish and Asian people in his songs.
On July 1, The Washington Free Beacon cited Ice Cube’s use of the phrases “White Jew” and “cracker” to refer to Jewish music producer Jerry Heller in his song “No Vaseline.”

The Free Beacon story described Ice Cube as “an anti-Semitic rapper who in his songs has called for violence against Jews and Asians.” In “No Vaseline,” he rapped “Get rid of that devil real simple, put a bullet in his temple.”

In “Black Korea,” which is purportedly about racism against the Black community by Korean shop owners in Los Angeles, Ice Cube threatened to “burn your store right down to a crisp.’’ He also called the store owners in the song “Oriental one penny countin’ motherf*ckers” and “little Chinese motherf*cker.”
In the preceding song “Horny Lil’ Devil,” Ice Cube raps, “Go down to the corner store and beat the Jap up.”

All three tracks were part of his studio album “Death Certificate.” The album was released on Oct. 31, 1991, a few months after Rodney King fell victim to police brutality in Los Angeles and escalated years-long tensions between Black and Korean community members.
Ice Cube most recently stirred controversy in June 2020 when he posted tweets in support of Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam leader who has referred to Jews as “wicked deceivers of the American people” and compared them to “termites.”
Several Twitter users criticized the NFL’s partnership with Ice Cube following the announcement.

“NFL, Ice Cube partner on economic-equity plan... the black racist bull SHI- in pro sports is amazing,” one user wrote. “That’s why November will be the most damaging to leftists in history. Overwhelming!!!”

Another , “Why would you [NFL] hire someone who calls for violence against Asians and Jews to help with ANYTHING???”
“How often do you hear about these programs for Hispanic or Asian communities/businesses compared to black 1’s? Who complains about racism the most? I’m not knocking for supporting black communities/businesses. Help all or none, not 1,” another .
To date, Ice Cube has reportedly not apologized for his controversial remarks. He has also journalists who described him as “anti-Semitic.”

That’s the issue about being young and militant.

When you get older and more experienced, you see and understand the big picture more and have a better understanding of the world around you.

When he did those albums, his head was still in the Hood and was closed minded on a lot of issues. After going around the world and experiencing life outside the hood, it opened his eyes.

Malcolm X was the same way. Young, militant and Fuck the World. Once he got out of that environment, saw the world and met people all over, it changed his outlook, especially after he went to his first Hajj in the Middle East.

It's a rock and a hard place for black people. The Republicans are way wrong, way racist, way controlling, way oppressive

The only people the Democrats seem to care about are the LGBTQ when it is black people cool get them and keep them in office. Yet we don't get no help nothing is directed to help us.

It's maintain status quo and attempt bipartisanship.

Yet we automatically GIVE our votes to the Democrats.

What are ways the Democrats could help Black people?

1) A cop kills an unarmed person is immediately suspended without pay. You fuck up this bad you stand a good chance of never being a police officer again

2) cops caught in a lie on record that leads to the detainment of a innocent person are suspended without pay and potentially fired

Sorry, all I can think about is cop shit right now
