I had just got fired from a DJ company. The owner claimed I wasn't of their "new direction". Not long after a local promoter in the fashion industry I knew asked me to do a few downtown gigs for free. My skills and her influence led to a paid store opening and a couple of hair salons.
At the same time I grabbed a copy of the SF Weekly newspapers and looked through all the entertainment listings to find out which bars had DJ's and live bands. This was crucial since it also meant that their liquor licenses allowed live performances. After getting bullshitted and run around for awhile I happened on a relatively new spot that gave me 1 Monday a month.
My night was pretty successful so I caught the attention of a local promoter who hired me to do a few events. I also started getting hired by people who rented the bar out for special events and birthdays.
Things started getting better in February when I signed up for gigmasters. It took me about a month to get thorough with my online mixtapes, pictures, description, sales pitch, etc, but now my bookings have almost tripled. I'm already getting return business from the customers I met through their sight.
That's the nature of the DJ business though. It's hard as hell to get a foot in the door, but once you give them a good service at a good price they will keep calling you back. If you're really thorough their friends and relatives will too.
It's a lot of fun and is probably the only job I've ever had that leaves me feeling fulfilled and satisfied after I'm done.
