Syracuse is going all in on the Greg Paulus experiment.

Orange head coach Doug Marrone officially named the former Duke basketball player as his starting quarterback on Monday night, even though Paulus has not played football in four years and has never played a collegiate snap.

Paulus, a high school football star who played point guard for the Blue Devils for four years, transferred to Syracuse as a graduate student this spring. Despite having just a week of official practice under his belt, Paulus beat out sophomore Ryan Nassib -- who was named the No. 1 quarterback in the spring -- and senior Cam Dantley, who was last year's starter. His first college football game will be Sept. 5 against Minnesota in the Carrier Dome.

The news that Paulus had won the job was sent out in an official news release late Monday night. Earlier this month, Marrone talked glowingly about how Paulus could handle such an unprecedented transition.

"He has instincts that are hard to teach," Marrone said. "He knows how to look people off, how to take control of the game and how to change plays.

"If you had ever met Greg Paulus, you'd understand and I wouldn't get a lot of the questions that I get," Marrone said. "If something can be accomplished, he can do it."

How the fuck is that possible if he already played 4 years of basketball? Isn't his eligibility up?:confused:

There is loopholes to it, he somehow has 1 year of eligibility left

My patna played D-1 football, graduated, and was able to play D2 ball for one season after that

Don't know exactly how it goes but I beleive once you graduated and enroll in grad school at another school you can play for one year

:smh: Have they reduced themselves to the roll of the dice and hope for ....whatever....:hmm::angry:

I miss the 90s when my alma mater was a strong football program (Marvin Graves, Qadry Ismael, Marvin Harrison, Donovan Mcnabb, Dwight Freeney, Keith Bulluck, and others......)

Damn, I need to get in shape and get grad school paid for!!!

When you get to college you have five years from the time you step on the campus, so some people red shirt but you only have the five years. You can only play 4 yrs in one sport but you are eligible for the full five years, so because he still has one year he can play any sport he wants for one more year as long as its not basketball bc he used up his yrs there, but he can play football for the last year because he hasnt played that and that five yr window is still open.

This speaks volumes about how shitty Syracuse football is when a kid that played BASKETBALL for 4 years can transfer to your school and be the STARTING QB.

:smh:

Not really...
Dude was a 5 star QB coming outa high school
If he had choose to play football instead of hoops when he started off in college he'd be in the NFL right now

Come on...u mean to tell me Syracuse has not one experienced QB on the depth chart? A dude that hasn't put on pads or taken a snap in 4 years is the starter? Just like that?

Syracuse football is garbage.

we can agree on that

that being said, talent wise, hes better than any QB they have on the roster, experienced or not. if he becomes the player that he supposed to be, he'll be in an NFL training camp next year. shit...the Packers were trying to sign him once he graduated. he hasn't played ball in 4 years....does that supposed to mean shit? especially when theres mad dudes who havent played years of football b/c theyre playing minor league ball, then they come back to the game and kill it. theres alot of places where he could come in and win the starting job.
not to mention that all of his older brothers are former college football players, and his younger brother (whos one hell of a young QB himself) are working out with him getting him into football shape and going over the X's and O's with him

As an alum of Syracuse, I can't say that I totally agree with Paulus coming in and starting, after playing basketball for 4 years. But...after what we have had to endure since 2005 with Greg Robinson as the coach(10–37 record overall, and a 3–25 record in the Big East), Im willing to give this experiment a chance.

Syracuse Football was garbage under Robinson. But..we got a new coach(a Syracuse alum)and hopefully, a better outlook. It will definitely be interesting to see what happens. Anything is better than what we had!!!!
