Aaliyah was the bigger star. She had a large catalog of hits and she was a very good actor. Remember the Matrixs role was hers. When she died Jada took over her spot.

With all her good reviews for her acting skills in previous movies, the Matrix may have made her a blockbuster actor.

Aaliyah's strength was also her biggest detriment to being the MEGA STAR you speak of which was her originality. She was too different to be as huge as you think. Beyonce and Alicia Keys made more commercial music than Aaliyah. Her doing movies would have helped her get bigger though.

I love Aaliyah, but I don't think she had the crossover appeal of Beyonce when she was alive. That doesn't mean she was less talented though. And her star was rising much faster than Beyonce's at the time of her death.
