#1: ATLANTIC BLUEFIN TUNA

images_0.jpeg

Why It's Bad: A recent analysis by The New York Times found that Atlantic bluefin tuna has the highest levels of mercury of any type of tuna. To top it off, bluefin tuna are severely overharvested, to the point of reaching near-extinction levels, and are considered "critically endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Rather than trying to navigate the ever-changing recommendations for which tuna is best, consider giving it up altogether. But if you can't

#5 IMPORTED SHRIMP
fish-to-avoid-shrimp_0.jpg

Why It's Bad: Imported shrimp actually holds the designation of being the dirtiest of all the seafood we looked at. (For our full list, check out 12 Fish You Should Never Eat.) Problem is, 90 percent of shrimp sold in the U.S. is imported. Imported farmed shrimp comes with a whole bevy of contaminants including antibiotics, residues from chemicals used to clean pens, E. coli, mouse hair, rat hair, and pieces of insects. Yum! Part of this has to do with the fact that less than 2 percent of all imported seafood (shrimp, crab, catfish, or others) gets inspected before its sold, which is why it's that much more important to buy domestic seafood.

Eat This Instead: Domestic shrimp. Seventy percent of domestic shrimp comes from the Gulf of Mexico, which relies heavily on shrimp for economic reasons. Pink shrimp from Oregon are another good choice; the fisheries there are certified under the stringent Marine Stewardship Council guidelines.

The reader comments to this story refuted virtually every claim in this "report" as misleading or just downright false.
Whether true or false, it's hard to take health warnings seriously from a guy who looks like Snooki's creepy uncle. :smh:

Muthafuckas didn't mention the BP OIL SPILL which affected the GULF OF MEXICO.....I bet the oil companies wrote this shit

I thought this was going to be non-health reasons to avoid certain stuff. Like langostino lobster (i will let you google that one, but it is all over the menu of a lot of the places you eat with "seafood"), and like scallops made out of shark meat. And dont order crab at a restaurant that is spelled with a "K".

Adding to our salmon woes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is moving forward with approving genetically engineered salmon to be sold, unlabeled, to unsuspecting seafood lovers.
...

The gulf of Mexico is toxic. You can't spill all that oil out there and not have it permiate all of the gulf's creatures. Eat that crap at your own risk.:puke:

I have mostly cut seafood (which I LOVE) from my diet after BP...y'all know that water ain't clean...

Where the hell do you eat? I've eaten shark. Dude there is no fucking way shark flesh can pass as scallops. Nor can mantas or skates pass as scallops. Stop with the BS.

They really do have fake scallops that are made of a bunch of unknown ground up fish and seafood parts kind of like the fake crab but even nastier. No idea if shark is one of the ingredients or not. I actually really do not want to know. :puke:

seafood is to risky to eat anymore
an when they roll out the GM stuff its pretty much a wrap

You've eaten rays? I agree with you about the shark, I had it also, but I've never had a ray. Everyone I've talked to who has, says it tastes just like scallop. I think the dude from Bizarre Foods said the same.

Man if you never had shark and bake you missing out a lot.

 & shark fin soup!

well I keep kosher so all them crustaceans are off limits anyways. Its rare that I eat tuna, I dont even fuck with tuna in a can. Every now and then I'll go to Reading Terminal and pick up a tuna steak or two (depending on if i'm cooking for her). other than that... shell fish and sea insects are off limits

I had shark once in my life and octopus...they weren't bad just never had much opportunity to eat them...flying fish is my shit tho!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
