Tankers have been lining up for hours after a massive vessel turned sideways, blocking one of the world's busiest trade waterways.

An unlikely maritime traffic jam is blocking one of the world’s most important shipping lanes after a massive cargo ship got stuck sideways across Egypt’s Suez Canal.

Tankers were seen lining up for hours near the entrance of the canal, which accounts for 12 percent of world trade and usually allows 50 cargo ships to pass daily between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.

A severe dust storm and poor visibility are to blame for the 220,000-metric ton, 1,312-foot container vessel turning sideways near the southern end of the canal on Tuesday morning.

Egyptian officials at the Suez Canal Authority confirmed that they were still trying to refloat the ship, named Ever Given, after it ran aground on its journey from China to Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Several rescue attempts to dislodge the ship have so far failed.

Ships in the Suez Canal were being diverted to an older channel on Wednesday after the cargo ship's stranded status passed the 24-hour mark.

“All crew are safe and accounted for,” said Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, which manages the Ever Given. “There have been no reports of injuries or pollution.”

The ship is operated by the Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen and is registered in Panama.

Reports of the bottleneck emerged after satellite data showed the Ever Given’s bow was touching the canal's eastern wall, while its stern looked lodged against its western wall and an image posted to Instagram by a user on another waiting cargo ship showed the vessel jammed across the canal.

A shipping monitor site showed the troubled ship surrounded by smaller tug boats trying to dislodge it from the banks.

Officials said the canal would “spare no effort” in ensuring global trade traffic can continue. The blockage, however, is likely to incur shipping delays. According to an oil export tracker, “tankers carrying Saudi, Russian, Omani and U.S. oil are waiting on both ends.”

An alternative route for the Asia-Europe container trade flows would take a week longer, Tan Hua Joo, a consultant with Liner Research, told Reuters.

Nearly 19,000 ships with a net tonnage of 1.17 billion metric tons passed through the canal last year, according to the Suez Canal Authority.
No U.S. Navy ships are affected by the closure, a 5th fleet spokesperson told NBC News.
Traffic jams are rare on the Suez Canal. In 2017, a Japanese container vessel blocked the canal but Egyptian authorities refloated the ship within hours.
Suez is still remembered for being at the heart of an international crisis in 1956 after Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nassar nationalized the canal, previously in British and French ownership. The move led to a failed invasion and a humiliation for the western European powers.

A lot of people have no idea just how large some of these container ships are.

This one in particular is as long as the Empire State building is tall. And there are bigger ships coming down to that canal all the time. That's crazy.

These ships have thousands of those metal containers on them also.

I am extremely suspicious about this although that was a very bad dust storm but still something doesn’t seem right

This view from space captures the true scope of the maritime traffic jam caused by the massive ship blocking the Suez Canal — amid new fears that the logjam might lead to piracy.

Satellite images show dozens of vessels stuck in the Gulf of Suez — in the northern end of the Red Sea — while the 1,300-foot-long Ever Given is wedged diagonally in the canal, blocking their meandering path.

Tiny Dover satellites operated by the San Francisco-based company Planet and the Airbus-built Pleiades satellite captured the soaring images of the flotilla waiting to enter the blocked canal, Space.com reported.

The mix of stranded vessels includes at least 41 bulk carriers, 33 container ships, dozens of tankers and at least one Russian warship, The Drive reported, citing Lloyd’s List.

The fully laden Ever Given — displacing 220,000 tons — was struck by unexpectedly high winds Tuesday that pushed it into the banks of the 673-foot-wide canal.

Meanwhile, multiple shipping companies from around the world have contacted the US Navy because of the possibility that pirates might target their rerouted vessels, the Financial Times reported.

But so far, no luck.

Salvage experts said it could take weeks to resolve the mess, which has forced the industry to consider anchoring billions of dollars of cargo at sea or take long — and potentially risky — routes around Africa.

A spokesperson for the Navy’s Fifth Fleet told the Financial Times that it has received several inquiries in the past two days from shipping companies over maritime security in the region, which has a history of piracy.

Zhao Qing-feng, an official with the China Shipowners’ Association, said that rerouting ships carries security considerations.

“Africa has the risk of piracy, especially in east Africa,” he told the news outlet, adding that companies may need to hire extra security guards.

Willy Lin, chairman of the Hong Kong Shippers’ Council, said warships from various countries might be needed to protect ships in the area.

While pirates have long targeted ships along East Africa, there has been a recent surge in kidnappings at sea and other maritime crimes in West Africa.

The US Navy told the Financial Times that naval operations have not yet been affected in the region, but companies were concerned that if the blockage continued, their ships could face risks.

James Wroe, head of liner operations at the Danish Maersk Asia Pacific, wrote on social media that the decision on whether to reroute the ships was a “roll of the dice,” according to the outlet.

On Friday, tugboats and a specialized suction dredger worked to dislodge the Ever Given as the almost 240 other ships remained stuck indefinitely.

Using data from Automatic Identification System trackers on ships at sea, data firm Refinitiv shared an analysis with the Associated Press showing that over 300 ships remained en route to the waterway over the next two weeks.

how in tha fuck they let that happened...
I've been through there twice on a Carrier and eight times on a Cruiser it real doesn't take much but there are so many safe guards it can only happen by chance of multiple fuck ups so best believe there are about to be alot of job openings. Keep eyes on the Gulf everybody this will leave a Navy battle group vulnerable with no back up to help them beat Iran, Russia and China already plotting.

The big boat is back: Ever Given finally arrives in Rotterdam after disastrous and costly Suez Canal incident

  • It's been over four months since the Ever Given got beached in the Suez Canal on March 23.
  • The ship held up cargo traffic for six days but came unstuck after much dredging and digging.
  • It finally docked at the Dutch port of Rotterdam on Thursday after authorities released it July 7.
The Ever Given, which blocked cargo traffic in the vital Suez Canal for six days in March after getting stuck, has finally arrived at the Dutch port of Rotterdam, its original destination.

The ship docked at Rotterdam's ECT Delta terminal on Thursday morning, per Reuters. It is expected to remain there unloading its cargo until August 3, when it is scheduled to move on to Felixstowe in the UK.

The ship was stuck in the Suez Canal for close to six days starting March 23. It initially set sail from a port in Yantian, China, before running aground in the crucial passage that accounts for about 12% of seaborne cargo trade.

Measuring more than 1,300 feet long, the ship is slightly larger than the Empire State Building in New York City. It took six trying days of dredging, lifting, and digging to get the ship unstuck, a herculean feat that was initially expected to take weeks.

While the Ever Given was stuck, some ships opted to abandon the Suez Canal and reroute, taking a massive detour around the southern tip of Africa.

Because of the unfortunate and costly situation, the global supply chain was thrown into chaos that lasted for weeks after the ship was freed. A logjam of more than 400 ships ultimately formed.

After the ship was freed, it was not free to go, however. The Egyptian authorities seized the Ever Given on April 13 and held it for months. It released the ship after the Suez Canal Authority arrived at an undisclosed compensation agreement with the ship's owner, the Japanese company Shoei Kisen Kaisha.

The ship finally left Egypt on July 7 — with more than 20,000 containers on board — a full 106 days after it first became lodged in the waterway.
