Sadly this will be a total non-issue imo. The problem with Trump is that the moment he's embroiled in some ridiculous scandal he moves on immediately to the next one. No one can keep up with the bullshit and the media is unable or unwilling to do the kind of curation/meta-narrative necessary to provide real insight. I bet if you polled most people right now they wouldn't have any idea that Donald is notorious for not paying his bills and even that's like a secondary scandal to the fact that he offered to pay NK in the first place. Say Easy, when you go back to that Conservative board ask the moderator how many of his followers were recent liberals you will be shocked if the callers are honest. Black people are still thinking that folks are going to do the right thing and go against Trump in 2020, not going to happen, the country is not being torn apart it's being put back into the privileges system it once was and the right thing for us is not the right thing for them, therefore he will win in 2020 because "He Envokes those feelings out loud that most only say to themselves and we are outnumbered, yea these so-called liberals openly criticize his actions but that's only for nieve black people to hear, how are they going to get somebody to vote against their true feelings and status? So the breakdown is some teacher used the ceremony for activism last year and this year's teacher is also anti-Trump. Instead of getting clowned on stage again OR someone refusing to attend, Trump does his usual and strikes first.
And if the black teacher were to attend without doing some type of protest, he'd get all types of work online.
It's like can EVERYONE cut the shit. All these events are a race to see who can back out first or show up the other person in another way. Both sides won't admit it.

Trump left the role of delivering the award to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. But he met with Robinson alone in the Oval Office before other state winners joined them, according to Robinson and national award finalists who spoke with reporters Monday afternoon. The meeting was not on the president’s schedule and all events were closed to press.
The teachers also met with Vice President Mike Pence.
“It was just a really pleasant experience,” said Robinson, a social studies teacher in a juvenile detention center in Richmond, Va. “We just talked a little bit about what our kids needed. He just let us know that he was listening and that the federal government would do whatever it can to help us out.”
