‘Deepfakes’ Will Create Hollywood’s Next Sex Tape Scare

Natalie Portman. Emma Watson. Taylor Swift. Sexually explicit videos featuring these and a number of other female celebrities have surfaced online in recent days, foreshadowing what could be Hollywood’s next big sex-tape nightmare.

Only this time, the videos in question haven’t been stolen by hackers, or commissioned by porn studios, starring barely-lookalikes. Instead, these new clips have been made with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) technology capable of swapping the faces of porn stars with those of famous actresses and other celebrities.

These so-called Deepfakes — a combination of ‘fake’ and ‘deep learning’ — first started popping up online in December, when a Reddit user began to post explicit videos seemingly featuring celebrities online. The user in question told Motherboard at the timethat he was using images found by Google image search as well as stock photos and YouTube videos to “train” AI algorithms, and essentially give them an idea of how a celebrity’s face would look like in any given moment.

Then, he applied that knowledge to the task of swapping out the face of a porn star in an explicit video with that of the celebrity in question. The results are clips that are more often than not convincing enough to look like hardcore porn featuring Hollywood’s biggest stars.

In January, the phenomenon took an unexpected turn when another Reddit user published an app that lets anyone without much technical knowledge produce their own Deepfake videos. The app has been downloaded more than 100,000 times since its release, according to its creator — and new clips are being uploaded by the dozens.

In fact, Deepfakes have gotten so much attention that the Gif hosting platform Gfycat began to remove the clips this week, deeming them objectionable. Most of the clip producers simply switched to other video hosting platforms. Reddit, which is being used to exchange links to these clips, has yet to comment on the phenomenon.

Meanwhile, even some of the users seeking out these clips on Reddit are starting to have second thoughts about the technology. Some seem to hold some hopes out that there may be a silver lining for Hollywood stars. “This is a blessing in disguise for all the celebs” who’ve seen their private pictures and videos leaked, argued one user who calls himself AnyNamesLeftAnymore. “Now if you have (an explicit) video with your boyfriend that gets leaked? You have infinite plausible deniability.”

But others fear that the repercussions of this technology could go far beyond sex and celebrities. “Imagine not being able to hold politicians accountable with video anymore because it could be fake,” said Reddit user ThatPickelGuy.

“This is turning into an episode of ‘Black Mirror’,” wrote a user who goes by the name CapntainIceberg. Reddit user hammerthefish agreed: “Nothing is real anymore.”

I watch TV and movies but when I say that don’t know who those white bitches are I’m serious. I’ve never been checking for white bitches, I was in that Beyoncé thread a couple hours ago where her father was talking about light skin made her popular and it wasn’t til then that i found out that her mother wasn’t a white woman. The push back on Deepfakes has probably been one of the most fascinating things that I've ever seen. Reddit has banned subreddits that didn't have anything to do with deepfakes.

They banned almost all of the Celeb-fake threads. They even changed their policy on porn to allow them to do this.

The dude that created a website for deepfakes.... deepfakes.com already has it up for sale.

Reddit bans ‘involuntary porn’ communities that trade AI-generated celebrity videos

Following other recent bans on the controversial practice of AI-generated, face-swapped porn, Reddit too has brought the ban hammer down. On Wednesday, the social platform shut down r/deepfakes and r/deepfakeNSFW, two popular hubs for the fake videos, which use algorithmic software to create virtual pornography depicting the likeness of unwilling participants. Reddit also updated its policy around involuntary pornography and the sexualization of minors. The move follows similar crackdowns on Pornhub, Discord and Twitter.

As Reddit’s new language states:

Reddit prohibits the dissemination of images or video depicting any person in a state of nudity or engaged in any act of sexual conduct apparently created or posted without their permission, including depictions that have been faked.

Images or video of intimate parts of a person’s body, even if the person is clothed or in public, are also not allowed if apparently created or posted without their permission and contextualized in a salacious manner (e.g., “creepshots” or “upskirt” imagery). Additionally, do not post images or video of another person for the specific purpose of faking explicit content or soliciting “lookalike” pornography.

Unrelatedly, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian announced today that he would be stepping aside at Reddit to focus on a full-time role at Initialized Capital, the early-stage VC firm that he co-founded.

Before the time of the ban, r/deepfakes had a subscriber base of more than 92,000 members. A screenshot from before the ban reveals recent posts of AI-generated porn featuring Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Olivia Wilde. A pinned post shares info about software called FakeApp that anyone can use to splice together porn with celebrity videos, resulting in a manipulated end product that can depict public figures (or anyone else) engaging in sex acts that never happened. TechCrunch has reached out to Reddit for more details on how they plan to enforce the content ban elsewhere on the platform and will update this story when we hear back.

The controversy around this kind of video blew up when Motherboard reported on Reddit user “deepfakes” who recreated a fake AI-powered porn featuring Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot. The story, appropriately titled “AI-Assisted Fake Porn Is Here and We’re All Fucked,” is a good primer on the whole thing.

The trend is disturbing on a few levels. Obviously it’s unsettling and extremely creepy for anyone to be able to create sexual content — essentially on-demand revenge porn — without its virtual subject’s consent. But even beyond the porn angle, the machine learning technology that makes these kind of manipulated videos work will only grow more sophisticated over time, making it even harder for internet-goers to determine what’s real and what’s fabricated.
