Crazy/Amazing car wrecks and traffic accidents

This thread is about crazy, amazing, unbelievable accidents. You know there are some you see and just say "How in the hell did that happen"?! Or some you say "Man, I hope whoever was in that made it out"!

I won't be posting accidents showing people with heads cut off and stuff like that. Now there may be some that have blood at the scene, and true that some people have died, I just don't think showing the gore is necessary.

If there is a story to go with the accident I will post it.

The guardrail, which was completely embedded inside the passenger compartment (see photos), prevented Haybe from crossing into the southbound lanes and causing a head-on collision.
Haybe was trapped inside the vehicle until medics arrived and were able to extricate him... alive

Witnesses who saw a gravel truck tip over and flatten a Volkswagen held out little hope the driver of the smaller vehicle had survived.

After all, his car had been pancaked. It stood only about two feet after the accident, which occurred in the Hunan Province of China. And at least one ton of gravel, the truck's entire load, had spilled on top of the
VW. At least an hour passed before rescuers could even find a crane to access the crushed car – the first one they summoned couldn't hoist the load.

Rescuers instead began digging through the rubble with their bare hands. When they finally reached the car's roof, instead of finding a gruesome tragedy, they found a miracle.

The car's driver had improbably survived the accident. The Sun reported
he suffered multiple broken bones, but his injuries were otherwise not considered life threatening. The driver's name has not been released.

While no car would fare very well after having a ton of gravel dumped on it, it is important that drivers and passengers come out of such mis-haps as unscathed as possible.

Cop miraculously survives car wreck bent in half
MSNBC reported an amazing story. The word “miraculous” scarcely describes the survival of a Santa Maria, California police officer who wrapped his Ford Police Interceptor around a tree Sunday morning. It’s what the local Police Chief calls the “worst accident he’s seen in 35 years.”

Sunday was a busy day for the members of the Santa Maria Police Department, starting with a police chase that resulted in a stolen car crashing into a first grade classroom of a local school. But that’s not where this amazing crash happened.

Hours later, Officer Damon Badnell was responding to an officer involved in a foot pursuit of a burglary suspect when he lost control of his vehicle on a slippery road. The momentum wrapped the vehicle around the tree, nearly bisecting the Ford Crown Victoria.

Officer Badnell, who recently was awarded for stopping the most drunk drivers, has a few broken bones but doctors are hopeful about his recovery.

Jeep vs Tree
Yesterday our group went wheeling for a New Years day run. Not long into the ride one of the new Jeep Wranglers went past a fallen tree and a branch that was sticking out hooked the Jeep. The end of the tree broke through the wheel well and almost seriously injured the driver. Does this remind anybody else of the movie Final Destination?

wrecking-ball.jpg

Alex Habay was in his Ford Taurus, stopped at a traffic light in downtown Meadville, Crawford County, yesterday morning, thinking about nothing, idly listening to a radio commercial while on his way to his summer job at the YMCA.

That's when a 1,500-pound wrecking ball smashed into the rear of his car.

"I was in complete bewilderment," said Mr. Habay, 20, of Hampton, a junior at Allegheny College. "At first I thought it was a car, but when I turned around there was no car.

"I was confused."

So were a lot of other people in Meadville yesterday.

Meadville police said the episode began around 9:45 a.m. about 3,600 feet away, near Allegheny College's Pelletier Library, where a crane was demolishing part of the building. That's where the cable holding the 3-foot-diameter wrecking ball snapped, starting its downhill tumble from the college to the town.

Police said crane operator Robby L. Boring, 28, of Meadville, was injured when he tried to stop the wrecking ball by throwing bricks in front of it.

As it gained momentum, the wrecking ball rumbled from the campus along North Main Street, pinballing back and forth across the street, hitting nine parked cars and damaging curbs with each impact.

By the time it reached Mr. Habay's car at North Main and Randolph streets, it had gained enough momentum to crush the trunk into the back seat, showering Mr. Habay with glass and pushing his car into the two cars in front of him. The fourth car in line was a Meadville police cruiser.

Mr. Habay, Mr. Boring and a second driver, Junior White, 67, of Meadville, were treated and released at Meadville Medical Center.

Mr. Habay said he doesn't remember much about the accident, describing it as "a huge crash."

Rescuers fitted him with a neck brace and put him on a stretcher after they pulled him from his car. Six hours later, the economics major and forward on the Allegheny College soccer team complained of neck and back pain and "a really bad headache," but felt good enough to go take a look at his car.

"It looks pretty bad," he said.

He hadn't thought much about it before, but he'd been carrying eight soccer balls in the back seat of his car for a while. He said a police officer told him the balls likely lessened the impact of the wrecking ball, saving him from more severe injuries.

Meadville police Officer Brian Joseph, who investigated the incident, said it was a straightforward case. By mid-afternoon yesterday he'd wrapped it up, except for one thing: "a whole bunch of paperwork."

"Everyday madness" - steel pipes as projectiles

While driving onto highway 31 from a main road in the Wesel district, a coach carrying school children failed to notice an oncoming articulated truck. The truck driver slammed on the brakes to avoid colliding with the coach.

The truck was loaded with three steel pipes inserted one inside another with a gross weight of 17 metric tons. It is not known how or whether the load was secured. What is certain is that the securing measures were inadequate as the deceleration was enough to make the pipes shoot forwards, crash through the trailer headboard and driver's cab before finally embedding themselves in the ground just in front of the coach's rear axle.

Almost unbelievably, the truck driver was only slightly injured, while the 58 children got away with a bad fright. The outcome could well have been fatal for some of them.

This accident occoured on the beach on July 5, 2004 at 2:45am
The driver of this vehicle was traveling eastbound on the beach approximately 4 miles east of Crystal Beach in Caplen, Texas This is what remains of a GMC Yukon after hitting a steel pole on the beach going around 60mph.

The driver and passenger had to be freed from the vehicle using Jaws and were both air lifted from the beach to UTMB in Galveston Texas. The two are expected to be ok. The pipe they hit was an old oil well and is approx. 14" at the smallest diameter and stands almost 6 ft tall. The pole did not move.

The old well has been in the same place for more than 20 years and no one has ever hit it. Later that day the author put reflective tape on the pole.

Thar she blows!
Dead whale explodes Taiwanese street, shops showered after gases built up inside

TAIPEI - Residents of Tainan learned a lesson in whale biology after the decomposing remains of a 60-ton sperm whale exploded on a busy street, showering nearby cars and shops with blood and organs and stopping traffic for hours.

The 56-foot-long whale had been on a truck headed for a necropsy by researchers, when gases from internal decay caused its entrails to explode in the southern city of Tainan. Residents and shop owners wore masks while trying to clean up the spilt blood and entrails.

"What a stinking mess. This blood and other stuff that blew out on the road is disgusting, and the smell is really awful," a BBC News report quoted one Tainan resident as saying.

The whale had died on Jan. 17 after it beached itself on the southwestern coast of the island.

Corvette Z06 Owner Survives Horrific Crash on the 405 in California
The Corvette Z06 may not look like much to you after this accident in California, but to the lucky driver who survived this horrific crash, it looks mighty beautiful, no doubt.

On Monday, he was driving his C6 Corvette on the southbound 405 Freeway in Sepulveda Pass when he somehow rammed into the back of a box truck and was stuck.

These photos show emergency personnel extracting the man from beneath the truck. He told officials that he ducked at the last minute, a move that likely saved his life. In one photo, he’s shown sitting upright and his head is just about in line with the bottom of the truck.

The accident happened shortly after 11 o’clock Monday night near Getty Center Drive in the Sepulveda Pass, which is a mountain pass through the Santa Monica Mountains in Los Angeles that connects the Los Angeles Basin to the San Fernando Valley via the San Diego Freeway (I-405).

According to the UK Daily Mail, Retired LA firefighter Rick McClure, 60, was among the first to arrive at the scene and he is quoted as saying “He was very lucky to say the least. In the past drivers have been decapitated after crashing underneath trucks so a law was introduced so they had barriers to prevent this.” McClure adds “It happened at about 11:10 pm so the freeway was fairly open. It was an uphill stretch of the road and the truck was going slowly up the steep grade. The Corvette must have been overtaking a few other cars and then all of a sudden he saw the slowing truck and went up the back of it. I was first at the scene and it was unbelievable to see the guy in the Corvette talking. He had some minor injuries but was in good spirits considering what had happened.”

Fortunately, the man, who was conscious during the entire ordeal, was carried to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The same can’t be same for this beautiful black Z06, which was basically destroyed from the windshield forward. That’s one tough way to transform a Z06 into a convertible.

The cause of the accident is unknown, but the investigation continues.
