Castlevania Animated Series Coming to Netflix
The animated series is set to release in 2017.

Yesterday, Netflix released a statement that included a brief rundown of most of the original content set to come out this year via the streaming service. Innocently tucked into the list was a reference to a program titled "CastlevaniaSeason 1, Part 1" and a vague mention of a 2017 release date.

According to Netflix's official description of the show (via IGN), the Castlevania animated series follows "the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself."

Furthermore, the plot will be a rough adaptation of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, which makes sense given how deeply that game tapped into the Castlevaniamythology. Dracula's Curse told the story of Trevor Belmont and his mission to slay Dracule once more in 1400s Europe. fought to stop Dracula from ravaging Europe in the 1400's. This was also the game that introduced Alucard, Dracula's son.

The show is being helmed by producer Adi Shankar - creator of this Power Rangers short - and written by comic book scribe Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan). Shankar told IGN that Ellis "added so much depth to the material."

An old Facebook post from Shankar also suggests that it could be a "super violent" and "satirical" take on the vampire sub-genre. A recent update from Shankar to IGN, portrays the show in a different light. He describes the show as "Castlevania done in the vein of Game of Thrones." That means that the show will be, in Shankar's words, "R-rated as fuck" and "the best fucking video game adaptation we've had to date."

Frederator Studios, makers of Adventure Time, are behind the animation. The studio had previously stated that they were working on "a project right now that we’re doing that needs to go unnamed, based on one of the most world-famous video games of the last 30 years, that we’ve had in our shop for 12 years without being able to get it started."

To say that this news is unexpected would be quite the understatement. There had been no concrete indication that Konami was even considering such a program much less that they were thinking about releasing it via Netflix.

Specifics aside, the fact that there will soon be a Castlevania show to binge watch is exciting enough on its own. While we'd be lying if we said that this is how we expected Konami to return the franchise to prominence, it's encouraging to know that they still have plans for some of their beloved franchises that don't involve slot machines.

Netflix producer on new ‘Castlevania’ show: ‘I’m personally guaranteeing that this is going to be the best f-----g video game adaptation ever made’

Video games are great at lots of things: immersion, delight, even storytelling every now and again. But when it comes to turning those successes into film or television adaptations, something goes terribly wrong.

The most recent example came in late December 2016, with Michael Fassbender starring in a movie adaptation of the "Assassin's Creed" franchise. Critics ravaged the film. "I suppose you could say the film made me slightly more likely to play one of the games, but only because I’d do just about anything before I saw this movie again," wrote Slate senior editor Jonathan L. Fischer.

It has an 18% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix is promising something different with a just-announced animated series based on the classic game series "Castlevania." Here's how Netflix describes the show:

"Inspired by the classic video game series, 'Castlevania' is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow! Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar."

The show's producer, Adi Shankar, says it's based on the third game in the series, "Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse." Here's what that game looks like, for reference:

He also has a message for the folks who think this show is destined to be another bad video game adaptation: "I’m personally guaranteeing that this is going to be the best f-----g video game adaptation ever made to date," he told Collider. "I’ve seen it, and it’s f-----g amazing."

Shankar got more specific in a post on Facebook:

Here's hoping he's right!

To Shankar's credit, his past work includes the excellent "Dredd" film, and the show's writer is acclaimed graphic novel author Warren Ellis. Additionally, the production company is Frederator Studios — better known as "the folks behind 'Adventure Time,'" among other things. But it's a bold claim to make regardless given past precedent.

From the sound of things, we'll find out for ourselves sooner than later; season one is scheduled to arrive sometime this year, on Netflix of course.

Yeah muthafucka!!! Bringing back 80s kids childhood, 1 step at a time!!!

Netflix are like HBO for cartoon series. If they can get that Thundercat lisence from Cartoon network and give us more than that 1 season they would be gods. Hell bring back Tron while I'm asking.

Ahead of its debut later this year, the first poster for Netflix's Castlevania series has been revealed.

Series producer Adi Shankar unveiled the blood-red art in a post on Facebook, which you can check out below.

As described by Netflix, the series will follow "the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself."

We had the chance to speak with Shankar shortly after Netflix announced the series. He confirmed the show will serve as an adaptation of the classic NES game Castlevania III: Dracula Curse, but couldn't share any additional details about the plot. Shankar did, however, say it will be "done in the vein of Game of Thrones" and "be R-rated as f***."

Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 will release sometime later this year. The season will be broken into four parts, with each episode lasting around 30 minutes.

Surprised it took so long to use the property. Castlevania should have been on a big or small screen by now.
