Bears WR Brandon Marshall bashes ESPN on Twitter for 'lying' to him

Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall isn't happy at all with ESPN right now. Marshall is upset about an E:60 segment that's scheduled to run on Tuesday night.

As you can see in the preview below, the network focused on Marshall's past accusations of domestic violence for at least part of the segment.

TONIGHT: Once accused of domestic violence, now a voice for mental health awareness. The Brandon Marshall story. http://t.co/QBeLqgX4Cq
— E:60 (@E60) September 16, 2014
Marshall's issue with ESPN seems to be that the network misled him about what the interview was going to be about.

@E60 is running a piece on me tonight that they lied to me about. It was suppose to be a story on a camp. They followed me around 2 years
— Machine Marshall (@BMarshall) September 16, 2014
Ago and at the end put a camera in my face to talk about it and asked nothing admit the camp or the community weekend. I'm disappointed
— Machine Marshall (@BMarshall) September 16, 2014
That @espn and @lisasalters continues to try and tell my story in @espn's words.
— Machine Marshall (@BMarshall) September 16, 2014
Better yet I'm pissed off - beyond disappointed. This is the second time @espn did this.
— Machine Marshall (@BMarshall) September 16, 2014
I trust Espn to tell my story & they lied to me once again to get my interview .Media exploits & tells thier own stories. Disappoints again
— Machine Marshall (@BMarshall) September 16, 2014
Well I guess I probably should use my coping skills now. Thanks @espn
— Machine Marshall (@BMarshall) September 16, 2014

As E:60 notes, Marshall has been accused of domestic violence, which is one among several run-ins he's had with the law. Marshall was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder in July 2011.

Marshall may also be taking issue with the timing of ESPN's story. Domestic violence has been at the forefront of NFL conversation since Sept. 8, when a video was released showing Ray Rice knocking out his wife.

Marshawn Lynch plays this shit correctly. Fuck yo interview. The media will chop it up and set you up. These players are just characters in their drama. Sad. :smh:

It's ESPN...it's about ratings

They were going after the hot story

I saw the commercial, but forgot all about it. I wanted to record it.

When I saw the timing I knew what was up.

me too...and they spoke on it during the early morning Sportscenter

.and they said NOTHING about DV.

Wow! The sports media are really trying to clean house, huh? If I was Brandon Marshall, I would definitely cease with giving lengthy interviews and only give what I am required to give. Other than that, avoid the media as much as possible. They are not to be trusted.:smh:

Why in the HELL after all these years and the growth of so many different media streams isn't BET like the go to sports network???

They should have access to ALL Black athletes especially in the NFL and NBA..

and airing ALL HSBC college basketball and football games, have sports talk shows etc.

and BET NEWS??? ESPECIALLY NOW???

Where they at?

I still can't understand what the hell they doing over there besides airing award shows.

they CANNOT be making money like this...

Its a catch 22. You can't build your brand if you dont give them access. In reality, its about diminishing return but these athletes didnt take real classes in college.

In the movie, Skyfall, dude talked about a colony of fruit rats that lived in an overcrowded space without enough food. The rats started dying and eating their dead then the rats started attacking and killing the weak until there was only 2 rats left.

Now those 2 fruit rats no longer eat fruit. They only eat rat.

This is what the media has done to most of us. They fed us a steady diet of celebrity and political gossip and bullshit information. Just opinions, editorial and blogger rants. This is all we had to consume.

Football ain't football. It's First Take, Pardon the Interruption, Numbers Never Lie, Olberman, Mike and Mike, Highly Questionable, plus a dozen more shows of this network.

Professional sports is the fuel the powers Sports Talk radio and television. Sports talk is really sports gossip.

Brandon Marshall let a gossip network into his life and he is now surprised this gossip network is doing what it does best.

He learned after all that shit in Buffalo. Fuck the media outlets. Marshall beat that chick way worse than Rice, but hey he got on his meds and got better. Let old shit stay in the past.

That is why I said to give the media as much as he is required to give. Athletes and coaches have to talk to the media. However, they do not have to discuss personal matters. If these athletes did. It receive media training nor know how to handle certain lines of questioning, then their best course of action is to decline to answer said questions and only focus on the game itself.

But aside from all of that, athletes need to look at these current events as a wake up call. They need to watch what they say and do while in the company of others. If it means they become more discreet with what type of women they deal with, what type of friends they hang with and which teammates they hang with, then so be it. They are like mini corporations. Their brand and/or image is under the microscope at all times and I believe there are people out there waiting for them to fuck up.

Brandon Marshall has his issues. I do not think he is a saint, but he has been pretty good since his past situation and he should focus on maintaining whatever image he has as well as focus on his work.

ESPN is on some bullshit with that. I saw the special last night and you can easily tell it was a ratings grab to focus on the NFL and domestic violence. Some of the shit they showed was rehashed clips from years ago that they tried to make seem all fresh and new.

Dude has been a model citizen for years now, it was very distasteful for ESPN to throw this report up on Marshall all of a sudden and angle it the way they did.

rNubb Well said also

This is why I don't tuck with ESPN outside of 30 for 30 series. They sgoppwd reporting the news aong time who and started "creating" the stories they want to tell.

Y'all see Gloria Allred huh? She got one of Brandon Marshall ex girlfriends from like 8 years ago best friend saying that she and her friend (Marshall's ex) called Denver team officials and NFL officials to report a DV incident involving Brandon Marshall and they ignored it.

I’m just out here working hard every single day, just trying to be the best poster I can be....

Sports talk is really sports gossip.

This shit dawned on me recently as to why I suddenly stopped listening & watching all those sports shows years ago. A bunch of men talk about da same fuckin shit every day all day.

WTF do I care what Michael Kay or whoever thinks about my Giants?

Pathetic

Brandon Marshall Just Gave A Very Compelling, Thoughtful Press Conference On Domestic Violence, His Past

Domestic violence. We often associate it with marital disputes, but the phrase really describes any physical resolution to a problem within our homes — whether involving spouses, aunts, uncles, grandparents, children or pets. Brandon Marshall tried to make as much clear today at a 45-minute press conference that covered an awful lot of topics. Marshall, who was accused of domestic violence by longtime girlfriend Rasheedah Watley in 2007, tried to set the record straight after Watley’s friend and attorney Gloria Allred held a press conference detailing the abuse and its subsequent handling.

[NBC Chicago] “I called Roger Goodell to see if he could speak some sense into Brandon. Mr. Goodell told me that he would look into the incident. A few weeks later, I emailed him with the same concerns. I never received a call from him or the NFL as a victim regarding my fear and concerns. A few months after, the NFL stated that Brandon Marshall would get a 3 game suspension; however, it was reduced to a 1 day suspension by the time the season began.

“Roger Goodell and the NFL have failed me as a victim … How many women will have to die or pass on the abuse from themselves to their children, who will either become victims themselves or perpetrators.”

Marshall attempted to clear the air, admitting fault and taking 75% responsibility for doing “terrible things” while pointing out that Watley herself had been abusive, often biting and scratching him. He also claimed that Watley’s family attempted to extort him several times, and that once, another woman had run to a neighbor’s house claiming Marshall had raped her after he alleges to have kicked her out for being drunk.

Suffice it to say that the details of his past seem to be murky and unseemly at the same time. He’s very aware of this.

Marshall also accused ESPN of misrepresenting his role in what clearly was a dysfunctional relationship. He even read testimony from the couple’s 2007 trial, whereby a therapist detailed their personal account of mediating both parties, saying that Watley often became angry during sessions, and admitted she was violent herself.

Finally, at the end of the press conference, the Bears’ wide receiver was asked about corporal punishment, to which he acknowledged having been whipped with an extension cord by his grandmother. He then went on to say that he does not believe in solving problems with physical violence, and that he “can’t wait” for the day that his children get into a fight and he can explain to them how to resolve an issue by talking it out.

Bears upset with Brandon Marshall's lengthy press conference

On Thursday afternoon, Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall opened up to reports at a team press conference regarding a variety of subjects, including his past history with domestic violence, ESPN misleading him during the filming of an "E:60" interview, Gloria Allred's recent public relations tactics and Roger Goodell's handling of domestic violence.

As one can imagine, the organization was not thrilled at all that Marshall went at length to voice his opinion regarding a wide variety of sensitive subjects.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Bears?src=hash">#Bears</a> sources tell me the team is dismayed by Marshall's press conf. and feel misled. They advised him not to speak, but he insisted. 1/2</p>&mdash; Dan Bernstein (@dan_bernstein) <a href="https://twitter.com/dan_bernstein/status/512703955017535488">September 18, 2014</a></blockquote>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>2/2 He said he wouldn't speak long, and would be contrite about his past. <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

A day prior, Marshall took to Twitter to voice his outrage towards ESPN for misleading him during an interview he conducted for a "E:60" story involving his past history with domestic violence. Marshall claimed that the network recently aired an edited version of a 2012 interview that painted him as a the villain and did not tell his side of the story. From the Chicago Tribune:

"ESPN really does know the story. Because they were sent packets with both sides of it. And that’s what is so upsetting. When someone can sit in my living room and look at me and my wife in the eyes and say, 'Listen, this story is about what you’re doing today. The mentorship.' Or this is about your camp, this is about your community weekend. And then they use our story and they sensationalize it to sell magazines or to get better ratings. It’s time that stops.”

ESPN ran the peace on Tuesday just a day before prominent lawyer Gloria Allred held a press conference in Atlanta on behalf of her client, Rasheedah Watley, Marshall's former girlfriend, to vilify Roger Goodell for failing to fully investigate Watley's 2008 claims of domestic violence.

According to Marshall, Watley's camp frequently tried to demand money from him following 2007 accusations, and passed out a packet of information including a letter from Watley to Goodell admitting she was pressured to make up the claims.

In all, it was a bizarre press conference, given both the subject matter and the length. According to CBS Chicago's Cody Westerlund, Marshall's speech cam in at around 4,200 words, none of which were "sorry."

With every word and phrase coming under great scrutiny in recent weeks, it is no surprise that the Bears were upset that Marshall provided over 4,200 of his own.
