Colin Kaepernick explains protest of National Anthem
SANTA CLARA, Ca. -- Forty Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick has willingly and knowingly immersed himself into controversy by refusing to stand for the playing of the National Anthem in protest of what he deems are wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the United States.

His latest refusal to stand for the Anthem -- he has done this in at least one other preseason game -- came before the 49erspreseason loss to Green Bay at Levi's Stadium.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game against Green Bay. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

The 49ers issued this statement: "The National Anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony. It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem."

By taking a stand for civil rights, Kaepernick, 28, joins other athletes, like the NBA's Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony and several WNBA players in using their platform and status to raise awareness to issues affecting minorities in the U.S.

However, refusal to support the American flag as a means to take a stand has brought incredible backlash before and likely will in this instance. The NBA's Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf of the Denver Nuggets, formerly Chris Jackson before converting to Islam, refused to acknowledge the flag in protest, citing similar reasons as Kaepernick and saying that it conflicted with some of his Islamic beliefs.

Abdul-Rauf drew the ire of fans and was briefly suspended by the NBA before a compromise was worked out between the league and player, who eventually stood with his teammates and coaches at the playing of the national anthem.

Kaepernick said that he is aware of what he is doing and that he knows it will not sit well with a lot of people, including the 49ers. He said that he did not inform the club or anyone affiliated with the team of his intentions to protest the National Anthem.

"This is not something that I am going to run by anybody," he said. "I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. ... If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right."

Kaepernick said that he has thought about going public with his feelings for a while but that "I felt that I needed to understand the situation better."

He said that he has discussed his feelings with his family and, after months of witnessing some of the civil unrest in the U.S., decided to be more active and involved in rights for black people. Kaepernick, who is biracial, was adopted and raised by white parents and siblings.

Kaepernick's Twitter feed is filled with civil rights Tweets and messages.

The former Super Bowl starting quarterback's decision to go public comes while he is fighting for his football life with the 49ers, who drafted him in the second round in 2011. He lost his starting job last season after being one of the most promising players in the NFL during his run under former coach Jim Harbaugh.

Over the past few months, his relationship with management has turned sour. He requested a trade last spring, which never came to fruition. He also has spent most of the offseason rehabilitating from operations to his left (non-throwing) shoulder, his hand and knee. That left him unable to fully compete with Blaine Gabbert for months and now, just weeks before the regular season starts, has him seemingly in a bind to regain his starting job.

He made his preseason debut against the Packers and played for the second quarter, completing two of six passes for 14 yards. He looked as rusty and you'd expect from someone who has not played since last November.

Following the game and without any knowledge of Kaepernick's non-football behavior, coach Chip Kelly said that there has never been any discussion about cutting Kaepernick.

Well, I hope he is ready to potentially get black balled out the league. Chris Jackson's was a light skinned brotha too. Lol.

Props but ALSO I feel this is a power play for him as well because he wants to be traded. If he were starting and in Von's shoes with a ring and madden do you think he still would be so vocal THIS pre season? I welcome all help to the fight just know your ass gon be on the front line where I can watch u

Kap better get use to sitting.....beceause hes going to be sitting on the bench during the regular season
I just hope "Kap homers" don't try & use this as an excuse to say "its a racial thing" when he gets benched

Him sitting for the national anthem is a non issue for me.
Aside from that, the bottom line is, hes not a good QB
Dude looked hella rusty last night
Gabbert also looked rusty his 1st game too though
Kap just has not had enough practice time to catch Gabbert & win the starting job

Kap homers will use this stance on the flag, to distract from the real issues with him...playing football

Wow ,guts. Wont sit well with White Americans that watch the sport. To the majority of whites this is a land flowing with milk, honey and justice they can't even fathom someone feeling this way. Instead of understanding they're first reaction is anger and disbelief (they're white privelage is so gone). They're going to make his life a nightmare but he gained tons of respect in my book.

I feel like this is a bigger sacrifice than Chris Jackson because once he gets black balled out the league there is no place to go outside of this country to play. There will be no coaching jobs for him also. Hope he saved his money.

Much respect to you Kap

For a minute consider the team he's playing for had a stadium in a Black neighborhood. When it fell into disrepair they moved it into a CAC neighborhood in another county even though it made absolutely no economic sense. The city then promised to build more CAC housing at the site of the old stadium. Now they want him to stand for a national anthem that celebrates their freedom to do this?

Even if the cops hadn't killed a single Black man all year his stance makes perfect sense based on that alone.

Fuck the 49'ers. Fuck the NFL. Fuck San Francisco, Fuck Santa Clara, and Fuck the Star Spangled Uber Alles song.

Some of the responses in here are a bit disturbing, I'm sorry.

Damn near 90% of ya'll seem to be saying, 'Shit bout to get ugly. Hope you saved your bread!' Da fuck? Maybe I'M trippin', but ya'll make it sound like, while he's doing this on behalf of all of us, he's really out there by himself. Then someone mentioned the coons he'll try to attack him ...

...but if the coons can coon, then black folks can't show a united front on of behalf of him?

They can boot him out of the league, but we can prop that brotha up if we WANT TO..... right???? Public support AND financial support if it ever came to that.

Respect to Kaep for standing up for what he believes- and although knowing the probable consequences, saying exactly what needed to be said.

Good for him salute

This doesn't help his NFL future but hey he has made millions hope he stacked up

Fuck these crackas
I was about to post the same story. Props to him. His 11.9 million dollar contract is guaranteed for this season and 11.9 million is enough to live on for the rest of your life.

At this point, he figured he didn't have anything to lose. His NFL life was already in Jeopardy and he seemed to be blackballed because nobody wants to give him a chance. What a time to say fuck it I'm going to stand up for what I believe in since I don't have shit to lose? It's about time somebody famous took a stand

You are 100% correct. That's a veteran they lowball you with disability initially. They say some things aren't service connected when they are. Folks who have been humping 100+ pound bags on their back and end up with back or knee problems are told that their injuries aren't service connected.

This country only pretends to care about veterans, but they only care about is the bottom line and once you've done the job they can give a fuck about you to tell the truth. Especially if you're black.

You are right to call them on the freedoms being one-sided.

agree w/ your first 2 statements...how do you think he could carry it out better tho? not a challenge...sincerely asking
He needs to handle his business professionally.. And put himself in a position to be an asset, which would in turn make him a less expendable part...as well as a more prominent voice against social injustice. As it stands, he is on his way out of the league, and can be easily discarded as a disgruntled employee, thus lessening his general impact on the matters at hand. He also needs to take the temperature of the room. And understand that most of his counterparts are brainless bucks and cowards who wont lift a fucking finger when he's black balled from the league. That being the case, it would behoove him to be more strategic as it pertains to being vocal and effectuating change.

The be clear, I admire the hell out of him for what hes doing for several reasons... I just see where its headed. And see that he probably wont max out his impact this route.
