SEASIDE, Ore. -- Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis on Thursday released body camera video of the killing of Seaside police officer Sgt. Jason Goodding.
The video is dark and it's difficult to see anything other than black forms. It was shot at night but it captures the moments on Feb. 5 in front of the Pig 'N Pancake restaurant as police tried to arrest a felon with a long record named Phillip Ferry.
While the video is dim, the audio is disturbingly clear.
Marquis, the District Attorney says Ferry shot and killed Sgt. Goodding with a gun inside his pocket. The officer's partner fired 7 shots back at Ferry, killing him.
A mile away at the All Rents Tool & Equipment on Highway 101, Sgt. Goodding is missed. He was a regular customer and friend.
“Jason's death really brings home the fact about how dangerous it is out there for these men and women that are protecting us and how quickly their lives are lost,” said owner Frank Orrell.
Marquis said he hopes the shooting makes lawmakers think twice before they change laws and make it easier for felons with long records, like Ferry had, to get out of prison.
In the meantime, he said the community continues to wrap their arms around Sgt. Goodding's family.
“The support for Jason and Amy, his wife, and their kids has been overwhelming. There have been a number of fundraisers for them,” said Marquis.
