Stuart Scott, the longtime ESPN anchor and reporter, has been battling cancer for some time.

He announced early last year that it had returned.

Scott was featured in a video that was broadcast at the 2014 ESPY Awards.

He was then given the Jimmy V Perseverance Award.
Scott thanked Keifer Sutherland for giving him the award on stage, saying 24 is his favorite show.

“Every day I’m reminded that our life’s journey is about the people who touch us,” said Scott.

He said that when he heard that he was to receive the award, he was speechless. He has given it out before himself.

He said that he follows the maxim: “Don’t give up. Don’t every give up.”

“To be honored with this, I now have the responsibility to never give up.”

He added that he’s been working to help the Jimmy V Foundation, which is involved in cancer research and prevention.

See a previous Associated Press story below.

BRISTOL, Conn.—ESPN anchor Stuart Scott says his cancer has returned.

Scott announced on Twitter late on January 15, 2013 that he would undergo chemotherapy every two weeks but would continue to work.

The “SportsCenter” host was first diagnosed with cancer in 2007, when an emergency appendectomy revealed a malignant tumor. He underwent chemotherapy again in 2011.

The 47-year-old Scott joined ESPN in 1993. He quickly became popular for signature phrases such as “Boo-yah!”

He tweeted: “Cancer wants to re-appear..picked the right guy cuz I HIT HARD all day long!!”

Stuart Scott's singular style

The first time most people saw Stuart Scott, he was wearing a leather jacket for the launch of ESPN2. "The Deuce."

But, as we soon realized, he didn't need to wear that to be hip. Stu walks into a room exuding coolness. I've been blessed to know Stu for more than 20 years. When we were both "SportsCenter" anchors, Stu asked me if he should tone down his style. I told him absolutely not. He's an ESPN original and the man GQ said put the hip-hop in sportscasting. Amen to that. As we all now know, there is much more to Stu's rich story.
I'm in awe of how Stu has stared down cancer in similar fashion, with his own take-charge style. His way of saying "Take that cancer -- booyah!"

Stu and I have a lot in common. We both are the baby in our families. We both love sports. And we've both faced cancer more than once. But the latter is not something we talk about much. We don't have to. We get it. Stu would rather talk about his beautiful daughters, his loving family, hoops ... and life.

Even before he was diagnosed, Stu was helping others by working with the V Foundation. It's incredibly fitting that he is receiving this Jimmy V Award for Perseverance in recognition of his bravery and strength. Stu embodies the unbreakable spirit of Jimmy V. The same confidence, swagger and determination. The same appreciation for family and friends. When you're fortunate enough to be in Stu's presence, no matter what challenge you're facing, you are inspired to not give up, to not ever give up.

Thank you, my friend, for your humor, your perseverance and for being as cool as the other side of the pillow. I love you.

1. “Like gravy on a biscuit, it’s all good!”

Scott accompanies this quote with a player having a career day or when a player makes a smart play.

2. “And the Lord said you’ve got to rise up!”

Bryce Harper hits a homerun as a rookie, giving the Washington Nationals the lead after trailing the Atlanta Braves at home.

3. “See, what had happened was…”

This is amongst Stuart Scott’s popular references. During the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals between the Pistons and Pacers, he teased Rasheed Wallace after throwing up an air ball from the 3 point line.

4. “Vlade Daddi, he likes to party, he don’t cause trouble, he don’t bother nobody.”

From Slick Rick’s “Lodi Dodi” covered by Snoop Dogg from the Doggystyle album. Pertaining to any Vlade Divac play, it gave the Sacramento Kings Center some much needed respect as he was rearing towards the descent into basketball irrelevancy.

5. “You ain’t got to go home, but you got to get the heck up outta here.”

No shade, Stuart Scott just wants to let you know you either struck out, or you messed up for getting ejected from a game.

6. “He treats him like a dog. Sit. Stay.”

After Allen Iverson broke a defender’s ankles, Scott dropped this one on the poor guy.

7. “Just call him butter cuz he’s on a roll.”

You hear this when someone is straight up balling!

8. “As cool as the other side of the pillow.”

Synonymous with plays consisting of a high degree of difficulty and executed with ease, this one is Scott’s most popular phrase. It plays into his demeanor on and off the camera as we know Stuart Scott to be the calm, cool and collected anchor on Sportcenter.

9. “Call him carwash cuz he’s automatic.”

You can thank former University of Kansas guard Jacque Vaughn for this one. He was money from the foul line, so clutch and dependable that Scott compared his mechanical synchrony to a carwash.

10. “They call him the Windex Man cause he’s always cleaning the glass.”

We all love hustle. Stuart Scott used to drop this quote when someone was reeking havoc in the paint, grabbing rebounds left and right.

Stuart was diagnosed with appendiceal cancer in 2007 and then it came back two years later. Currently, he is still undergoing treatment.

Appendix cancer is extremely rare, affecting an estimated 600 to 1,000 Americans each year. Tumors that occur in the appendix comprise a large group of both benign and malignant diseases. Even among those tumors that are cancerous, it is important to note that not all of them behave the same way.

Some types exhibit a much more aggressive behavior (those that are referred to at a microscopic level as “signet ring cells”) compared to others (referred to as “moderately differentiated” or “well-differentiated”).

In the early stages of the disease the appendix is removed, and tumor size is directly related to prognosis (outlook). Appendix tumors less than two centimeters have a low tendency to spread and patients generally have an excellent five-year survival rate, while tumors larger than 2.5 centimeters may require more aggressive treatment and patients have a lower survival rate.

Unfortunately, appendix cancer often remains undiagnosed until it is unexpectedly found during or after abdominal surgery or when an abdominal mass is seen during a CT scan for an unrelated condition. This is further complicated by limited radiographic techniques which may reduce the ability for physicians to clearly see the abdomen and determine the extent of disease or even its origin.

For these reasons, a majority of appendix cancer cases are not noticed until the disease is more advanced. These patients typically exhibit many tumor deposits spread throughout the abdominal cavity, accompanied by abundant fluid buildup (often leading to a swollen or distended abdomen), all of which originates from the appendix.

If appendix cancer is suspected during abdominal surgery, the surgeon would take a tissue sample (biopsy) for a pathologist to review.

Otherwise, the cancer may be diagnosed after your abdominal surgery as part of the routine pathology reading. In that case, another surgery would most likely be recommended to make sure all the cancerous tissue is removed. This surgical approach, called “debulking” or cytoreductive surgery, is the accepted standard for treating advanced appendix cancer.

In addition to surgically removing all visible tumor in the abdomen, heated chemotherapy (called HIPEC, or hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) can also be used during the operation to bathe the area and eliminate any remaining microscopic disease.

This procedure is long and carries significant risk, and is therefore reserved for those patients who have the best chance of benefitting or being cured.

Some patients with appendix cancer may have too much disease to remove in this manner, or may have other issues that would make this operation too dangerous to be a viable option. For these patients, systemic chemotherapy is an option, and it is thought to provide significant benefit both for symptom management and to prolong survival. It should be noted, however, that there is no consensus in the medical community about what chemotherapy would be the best option in this setting, though it is typically treated similarly to colon cancer. Studies to determine optimal treatment are ongoing.
