What's this place? Well, in 1738 Manuel d Montiano had this fort built. Why though? He had it specifically built for BLACK PEOPLE. It was the first legally sanctioned settlement for FREE BLACK PEOPLE on this continent. This is before Florida even became a part of The United States and was still under Spaniard rule.

Why did they do it? When the right thing and personal gain intersect things like this happen. The Spanish had been actually started offering asylum to slaves from the British colonies in 1687. In 1693 they made it official issue and said look we not fucking with that no more. The crown condemns it. At the colonial source awards the Spanish got on stage Suge Knight style and said "If any slaves want to get off the plantation come to Spain Row." All you had to do was escape (I know right just escape incredibly dangerous mobs trying to kill you and a journey triathalon's would quit midway through today with no wypipo on the side offering you cups of water to help you to freedom "Yu cahn do it!") and then convert to Catholicism (Always with the religion thing so how free was it my brotha?

) And serve 4 years in the military for the crown. That was key, the Spanish were getting hit up by the Brits and they needed some muscle. How do you get the best muscle in the world? Offer them freedom. It scratched our backs, though they had been scratched by whips, and it scratched theirs. They get to get an army, people loyal to this crown and not the other one and it destabilizes the plantation economy while doing so, in theory this was going to be dope af and end slavery.

We know it didn't but this is a part of our history they don't talk about. Right there in Florida in the 1700's there were free black people in their OWN SHIT that they owned.
