‘Strike Back’ Reboot Gets Series Order By Cinemax & Sky, Sets Core Cast

Strike Back is back. A new incarnation of the popular action series with new characters and a new cast has been greenlighted by Cinemax and Sky to film in 2017. Aussies Alin Sumarwata an Daniel MacPherson (The Shannara Chronicles) and English actors Roxanne McKee (Dominion) and Warren Brown (Luther) are set to star in the new season of the show — its sixth overall and fifth on Cinemax — from the franchise’s executive producer Andy Harries of Left Bank Pictures.

I hear Harries — who was behind the original season-long Strike Back on Sky starring Richard Armitage and Andrew Lincoln, and the Cinemax-Sky collaboration, toplined by Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester, which ran for four seasons — had the idea for another reboot, which both networks embraced.

I hear the new Strike Back is evolving from the buddy cop formula of the original into a diverse ensemble in the mold of The Fast and the Furious franchise. And while the previous incarnations were focused largely on the remnants of Al-Qaeda, the storylines of the new Strike Back will reflect the era of ISIS. There are no current plans for Stapleton or Winchester to reprise their roles in guest starring stints but I hear that is a possibility.
In the new Strike Back, written by Jack Lothian, disavowed and disbanded, the Section program is restored in order to track down a notorious terrorist following a brutal prison break. Tasked with covert military intelligence and high-risk operations, the resurrected unit embarks on a lethal manhunt that will uncover a vast web of interconnected criminal activity. As the team journeys across the Middle East and Europe, they uncover a deadly conspiracy which threatens to overwhelm them all and change the face of modern warfare forever.

Sumarwata plays Gracie Novin, a gear-head who is looking to make the step up. Genuine, honest to the point of bluntness, she’s the heart and soul of the team. MacPherson plays Samuel Wyatt, a bar-room philosopher who works best alone and has no intention of being dragged into a team situation. McKee plays Natalie Roberts, who comes from a military family, excels at psychological profiles and seeking weaknesses in others, although she might be blinded to her own fault-lines. Brown is Daniel “Mac” Macallister, a man of his word, affable, physically capable, and driven by a desire to avenge the team he’s lost.

Lothian, who serves as showrunner, executive produces with Harries and Sharon Hughff for Left Bank Pictures. Michael J. Bassett will serve as director and executive producer, Bill Shephard as producer.

In addition to the four seasons of Strike Back Cinemax co-produced with Sky, the U.S. network in 2013 aired Sky’s first season as Strike Back: Origins.

MacPherson also is filming Ava Duvernay’s A Wrinkle In Time and has a recurring on Fox’s upcoming drama APB. He is repped by UTA, Management 360 and Australian agency Mark Morrissey & Assoc.

Cinemax Announces New Strike Back & Outcast Season 2 Premiere Dates

Cinemax‘s programming overhaul continues next year as it confirms the premiere dates for the new Strike Back and the second season of Outcast. Strike Back, of course, was the company’s first venture in original programming back in 2010. The original show was based on a novel of the same name written by former Special Air Service (SAS) soldier Chris Ryan and it tackled the actions of Section 20, a secretive branch of the British Defence Intelligence service (DI), who operate several high risk, priority missions throughout the globe. Running for five seasons, the show garnered generally positive reviews from critics and performed well in terms of ratings. Outcast, on the other hand, is a brand new horror drama based on the comics of the same name by Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta which debuted last year and was also met with great reception.

The pay cable network’s shift in content production was first kicked off last year when Kary Antholis, HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming President, announced their plans to put out air four original series a year. The selection will be comprised of three co-produced cost-effective shows and one that has a bigger budget that will serve as the channel’s banner project.

Announcing their newest slate of original content for 2018 starting with the return of Strike Back on February 2, Cinemax released an official presser detailing all the other new projects they have on their docket for fans. In it, Antholis also expressed his excitement with what is to come for the pay cable channel saying:

“We are very excited to present a slate that moves CINEMAX back in the direction of fun, often adrenalized, and always entertaining series. We have strategically seized upon co-production opportunities that allow us to maximize the impact and production value of these shows for our viewers.”

Cinemax will keep the ball rolling after Strike Back‘s resurgence with an original six-part thriller, Rellik which will air starting on April 13 and will star Game of Thrones‘ star Richard Dormer. Two months after that, in June, J.K. Rowling’s best-selling crime novels. C.B. Strike (which she wrote under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith) will get the small screen treatment. The series, which has the same name as its source material, will center on Strike, a war veteran turned private detective, operating out of a tiny office in London’s Denmark Street who is played by Tom Burke. And then finally, in July, Outcast‘s second season will be released.

Despite not having specific roll-out dates yet for C.B. Strike and Outcast season 2, fans can expect that they will also be released on a Friday much like Strike Back and Rellik. Cinemax is keeping its Friday 10 PM slot as its regular air date for its original content. More details regarding the aforementioned projects are going to be released in the next several months as the new lineup will be backed-up by a marketing campaign.
