Charles Smith doesn't get enough mention for his guitar work, especially the Kool & The Gang stuff. I use to think some of these parts were overdubbed..

Guitarists don't play like this anymore. I miss the old days. A lot of guys I've played with want to be loud and up in the mix. They don't groove like this. They play full bar chords in the wrong register just muddying up songs. They don't use their ears. Funk guitarists in the past played triads or double stops and they blended in.

Excellent point. Seems like everyone wants to solo and play fast and loud. I've been working on my rhythm guitar strumming like Nile Rodgers. My goal is to be very diverse on the guitar with barre chords and with soloing. If you can do more things overall, i believe you'll have more ideas to create.

Agree!, a lot of musicians don't know how to blend. When I was in high school, an uncle came to one of my rehearsals and the first thing he said to me is that I was too loud, he said you have to learn how to blend in. Most of my gigs nowadays is playing bass and you definitely have to get an understanding with keyboard players because they'll get in the way playing in the bass register, and to me, it sounds terrible and it throws me off.

Keyboardists who play bass is the bain of my existence!! I won't tolerate it! It's been years since I had to deal with that though.

Excellent point about the sound overall. Very important component to any performance or track

Good video

That’s crazy. I was just looking at that same video a few hours before you posted It here. Curtis was the truth.

I’m primarily an R&B, funk & blues player with a bit of jazz sprinkled in. Been on a mission lately to upgrade to the next level of my playing, so I’ve been practicing a lot more these days. Had a nice gig a week ago with a hybrid of members of my current and previous band. I sang lead and played percussion. But also played lead and rhythm guitar. So, I had the chance to showcase my (guitar) homework.

I’m gonna share here a few guitar vids that have been inspirational over the last couple months.

Eric Gale is one of my top 2 favorite guitar players and the player whose style I model my own after the most. He was brilliant. Not primarily a shredder (though he could shred), but super tasteful and often understated. He seemed to always know the right lines and notes to play for the situation- with a gorgeous guitar tone. In that way his approach was similar to Miles Davis. Not too much, not too little. Just right.

Eric and BB at Montreux in 1982. Great vid. My favorite part was the slow blues at 4:01.
