Airbnb host sent guest's wife image of him with another woman in scheme to extort him: lawsuit

After an Airbnb guest wrote a less-than-glowing review of his stay at a Tennessee rental, the "superhost" lashed out and attempted to extort him by emailing his wife a photo of him with another woman.

In the lawsuit, Shawn Mackey is suing Airbnb and "superhost" Pamela Fohler.
Mackey accused Fohler and Airbnb of invading his privacy, inflicting on him emotional distress and causing "damage" to his marriage.

"The plaintiff’s marriage has suffered as a result," it said, adding that the incident caused Mackey "extreme emotional distress," "public humiliation," and "mental anguish."

Shawn Mackey

A man is suing his Airbnb “superhost” for “damages to his marriage” after she allegedly attempted to extort her guest by sending his wife pictures of him and another woman. The Daily Mail reviewed court papers pertaining to the case.

Mississippi resident Shawn Mackey rented Pamela Fohler’s Oklahoma retreat for himself and a group of friends in the fall of 2022. Mackey reported there'd be a total of four guests including himself. The night Mackey arrived, he sent Fohler a total of nine guests he was expecting for dinner.

Fohler responded a few minutes later: “We will be able to accommodate a max of 8 guests. This is due to the city restrictions and capacity at our home. I apologize we had not discuss [sic] the guest count tripling.” She asked Mackey to add the additional guests to the reservation, noting there was an additional charge even if they didn’t spend the night.

Text messages between Shawn Mackey and Pamela Fohler during the pair's argument over the Mississippi's man stay at her Airbnb.

Almost an hour later, she emailed him again. In the meantime, she’d allegedly received complaints from the neighbors regarding noise and profanity coming from Mackey’s party.

The altercation eventually escalated so much that Fohler requested Mackey and his party leave the house. “I am very sorry, but you have violated the no-party rule, disturbed my neighbors by cursing and yelling in the parking lot, and have unauthorized guests,” Fohler said in a message to her guest. “I am asking you to leave now. I can't allow you to stay, I am sorry.”

However, Mackey maintains that none of this is true. He said he left the following morning, per Fohler’s request, but said there was no party, no cursing, and no uninvited guests. “At the time he checked out of the property, [Mackey], who had broken no rules and had spoken to the host, thought all issues had been resolved as simply a misunderstanding,” his lawsuit reads.

Mackey promptly requested a refund of $502.46, presumably for the nights he booked but did not stay, and left a negative review of the property. This is when things took a much darker turn. Fohler, concerned that Mackey's review would jeopardize her “superhost” status, allegedly “began harassing” him.

The lawsuit alleges that the host sent illicit photos to the guest's wife.

About a week after their ill-fated meeting, Fohler sent Mackey an image of him and another woman snapped from the house’s doorbell camera. In the attached message, Fohler refers to Mackey’s wife by her first name.

“Hello Shawn, hope you are well. Sorry it took so long to get the photos you requested together to show your stay at our home. But I had faith, was driven by integrity, so I committed to get these posted for you and Airbnb. Photo at 3:16 am is especially notable. Should I forward the photos and videos to Teresa, or will you?” the chilling text read.

Airbnb deleted Mackey’s review and threatened to terminate his account. They sent him a bill for $960, which reportedly included an additional guest fine of $160; two separate $250 fines for “breaking rules against local guests” and “excessive noise”; and $300 for “moderation of your review.”

Mackey refused to pay. Fohler retaliated by emailing the illicit photo to his wife with the subject line “nice bag.” In the body of the message, Fohler wrote: “I love your bag, where'd you get it?” seemingly referring to the pictured woman’s purse.

Mackey claims that his marriage has suffered as a result of Fohler’s harassment. He also claims Airbnb did not defend him in the matter, apparently taking Fohler’s side. For her part, Fohler denies sending Mackey the image or ever communicating with his wife.

“The plaintiff's marriage has suffered as a result,” the lawsuit alleged, before going on to detail Mackey’s “extreme emotional distress, public humiliation, and mental anguish.” He is suing Fohler for “economic damages” and “damages to his marriage” in addition to emotional damages related to Fohler’s alleged violation of his privacy rights.

Airbnb is the dumbest shit ever.

Should have gotten a hotel room.

Picture me paying for accommodations and having to clean and take out the trash or face a fine.
Depending on what you use them for is how reliable they are compared to hotels.. bachelor parties, photoshoot/vidshoots, escorting, small gatherings, etc they were preferred method. In places like nyc it was way cheaper to use them than to pay for certain hotels with a lot of rules

Most of the host got on to the people using their places for commercial purposes… I use to have some girls use them to see clients and do photos and video shoots from them. Now they explicitly deny those uses in the renting rules. I’m talking about the little basement apartments and converted garages in bk and queens. They have cameras everywhere and prevent you from having more than two or three people in the space.

And they still charge you a cleaning fee on top of it.

How did the host know that wasn't his wife. Seems like she was assuming that was the wife in the pic and just trying to show her proof that there were more people coming in than the amount of guests on the agreement.

Unless he told her that wasn't his wife then... Almost sounds like the wife may of done the booking on paper but the host was talking to dude? Some details are missing.

I can't envision if I will ever use Air BnB again. Too many horror stories. Whatever happened to Air BnB? When it first started, it was new and exciting where you can have the comfort & feel of a home on your vacation at a very cheap cost in comparison to staying at a hotel.

But nowadays you gotta bring your own surveillance and tracking devices to make sure your not being monitored and recorded by camera that the host secretly sets up.

There are just too many precautions you gotta take when you use air bnb nowadays, it just takes away from the experience of enjoying it.

yea there was a time when Hotels had to worry, now hotels are slowly becoming the preferred choice.... these air bnb owners

are getting too fuckin weird and unprofessional...

this owner shouldve just sucked up the bad review and left it at that...I wouldve ensured I would look into the issue,

blah blah blah, here is twenty percent off your next stay blah blah blah, thanks for pointing out how I can make improvements blah blah blah...

Dont fuckin shoot yourself and the whole air bnb ownership community in the foot, this air bnb's owners GROSS OVERREACTION to

a bad review, didnt just reflect on them, it reflected on the whole air bnb ownership community.

For some reason, the host knew the wife by name. The guest said he registered everyone that visited or stayed per the contract agreement. My guess none of the registered names matched the wife's, so the host knew he had some ammo.

She was unprofessional, just take it up with Airbnb and collect if it was apart of her terms.

Anyway I got stories of good & weird hosts as well as some janky guests.

One was this white guy who booked a room and my Black girlfriend was just listed as the host. After he missed the check in window, my gf messaged him I'll let him in. He never showed up for his four day stay then when it was over, he gave a bad review then told Airbnb that my gf was going to give him a refund. Airbnb checked the messages, we kept the money and erased his review.

We then looked at his four previous stays and saw exclusively Black women hosts giving him glowing reviews.

If you going to step out for a minute on your main chick, go to a hotel that’s in the next city like Holiday Inn express or something similar and take care of your business
I go 2 counties over and no less than 15 miles away. Or use a toll road trip. Grimey folks are poor; they ain’t paying no $4 or $5.

There has been a steep decline in AirBNB recently. Both guest and host are leaving in droves.
It is not what it used to be. People are going back to renting hotels.

P.S. The dude in the story is an idiot.

It might be a healthy correction, the well managed air bnb's arent going anywhere..

too many folks in the game, that didnt do their homework and just lookin for a quick

money grab... air bnb used to have an anti-corporate vibe that resonated with the people..

it needs to gain that back.. also people/customers need to learn how to respect other peoples businesses and property,

some folks are just destructive... everywhere they go, they just breaking shit!!

you can still make money in the air bnb business...but you better do your homework and get a good Idea

who you are renting to....

If he DID NOT have MULTIPLE guest... the HOST and AIR BNB owes this man A NICE CHECK!!!!

the host outright said he had guestS.... so if that is proven to be a lie, then so is everything else the host said..

That's why I have never and will never use Airbnb.
Airbnb is the dumbest shit ever.

Facts. Had a bad experience one time and said yeah never again.

Nigga wanted to charge for smoke damage when my boys clearly were smoking in front of the house about 10 feet away from the house.

Plus that whole spying thing with hidden cameras yeah I’m good.

used it plenty of times and never had this experience....

basically it was like a hotel room

I booked one time at a great price in the Bay area over Xmas weekend. Got flight tickets based on getting the great Airbnb deal.

The bitxh canceled on me after she realized she didn't update the price for a major weekend.

Airbnb did nothing and I had to spend extra on a last minute hotel booking. Fuck Airbnb

It's more than that.

Imagine trying to book a convention in New York City with airbnb. Some of your guests would get kicked out over last minute bullshit and end up wandering the streets all night. Others would get lost and never make the convention at all.

With a hotel you have one location and one set of rules. Without one you're throwing the convention in different city next year.

No it literally was that. You not from nyc so you don’t know that lyft/uber had a huge impact on the yellow cab economy and how air bnb was fucking with the hotel economy. I literally have friends that work in hotels and they were explaining how bookings were down due to hotel prices vs air bnb.. anything that fucks with Jew money in nyc they literally turn into bad guys.. just like lyft/ Uber they spend millions of dollars with slander campaign commercials against air bnb and saying how bad they were.. than they started pushing rules on them making them harder to do.. just like nyc was trying to make turo illegal here cause they didn’t want them cheap rentals fucking with the car rental companies in nyc.. it’s always about the money in nyc in particular jew money.. they try to create a monopoly system and hate competition or other options

We have all 3 of those services on San Francisco too. It's hardly a foreign concept. I also literally have friends who work at hotels as well.

Whoever owns them they are vital for the convention and tourism industry in any city. Las Vegas has the worst public transit system I've ever seen, but even they built a monorail to link the hotels to the convention center. That's how crucial it is.

On top of that Airbnb reduces the housing stock which pushes rents up. It makes it so that people who do low paid but essential work can't live close to their job which is a problem for employers of all ethnicities.

Turo is terrible and I hope NYC gets of them. Their rentals are only cheap if you refuse collision coverage. Once you throw that in they're on par with Enterprise.

before them legal fees really start to pile up!! OH and he better go after Air Bnb too..
