I though my boys here could give me some help on this one.

My paypal account got jacked for over $4,000 (had it linked to my bank account, I feel like a complete idiot!)

I called Paypal and my bank and got to go in tomorrow to see what I can do.

I got the name and e-mail account the money was sent too (we all know this is probably bogus) but I know I got some real techies on this board...

you got any advice for me?

And how in the hell did this d-bag hack my paypal account anyway?

Peace and thanks!

That was my question to you. How did they know you existed? Did you to go some website to make a purchase using paypal? Did you try to purchase from your own computer or from library?

As far as the money goes, you won't suffer any loss.

My advice to you would be to scan your system for trojans and or keyloggers if you think this could have happened from home.

Did you log into your account on a public computer?

Your browser could have been hacked.... or there could have been keystroke loggers on your pc..etc.. need more details..

Most likely they didn't hack your paypal account. They would have to crack paypal's systems for that. Somone probably did one of the two things above...

You most likely got phished.
Did you get an email from Pay-Pal saying you need to update your account information? If so, it was scam and you innocously entered your email and PW on a site that looked just like PP, but was a fake page that does nothing but collect.

You're probably going to have a helluva time proving it wasn't you in the end since it wasn't a forced hack. Then they're going to try to prove you didn't have legitimate business with the person who received the funds, because they have your email address and banking info with your contact information so they manipulate fake records and emails.

Good luck and let us know what the outcome is.

Never ever connect your PAY PAL account to your regular or personal Checking Account.(PERIOD)

Here's the trick...go to your local check cashing joint...ACE is the best but any major Check Cashing spot will do Moneymart ect...

Purchase a pre-paid VISA or MasterCARD debit...I think it costs $10.00 or something....

Then put $50-$100.00 on it.

Before you leave the Check Cashing Joint ask them for the ROUTING INFO on the account. They should give you a print out.

By law they have to give you a print-out!!!... it is the the law in most states....

On this printout will have the Bank Name and Routing number of your account.....YES A PREPAID DEBIT CARD AT A CHECK CASHING spot is an account!

Just because you don't get checks or have a physical location it still is a valid bank account.

Now when add this card to your PAY PAL account simply use the bank name, account number and routing address to verify your pay pal....

NOW IF ANYTHING FRAUDULENT happen with your pay pal it woun't effect your real world account.

Only keep what your need on the debit card so you have little chance of being wiped out should some bullshit go down.

Also if your debit card is VISA they protect you against all FRAUD charges....

There are some service fees involved but the added security is well worth it...

Hope this helps...

Something is going on with Paypal.

For the last week..I've been trying to change my card and it only tell me to change my cookie setting

Something is up with their records

i don't even fuck with money over the net after i got phished...luckily it was an email i didn't use regularly...but if anyone knows how i could get that back that'll be nice too...lol..it was a yahoo account...anyhow...how do u know when there are keyloggers on your computer who can somehow read what u type??? im not a techy so this shit bewilders me

When exactly did you find out because whenever a transfer or anything is done to your paypal account you get an email alerting you about it. Also on paypal it says you can cancel payments if they are unclaimed meaning if the money goes into their account and they haven't logged in yet you can cancel it.

Yea man,
I never click on the links you get in an email, I close the email and log into the account from the site itself. You can always tell tho, cuz when you hover the mouse over the login button, the website below shows you some weird website. Never log into Ebay or Paypal from an email, NEVER...

Interesting. But Paypal will NOT allow funds to be transfered to that debit card will they?

I am inclined to agree with you in regard to your statement about Paypal over at least the last week. I have sent them at least 4 messages using their resolution centre and have yet to receive 1 response. This was a week ago. After I submit my inquiry I get a message stating that a customer service rep. will respond shortly. Still waiting though. But I would not be surprised if I get no answer period.

this shit happened to me except i was on the wrong side of receiving the money and i had already shipped the item. so i got fucked two times.

Been using this for a min
Click Here

Damn! That sucks!! That happened to a friend of mine.. well sorta... he ex hubby transferred money out of her verified paypal account into a checking account. The emails that the paypal used for you might be fake, but they have to be linked to a real account because when you first sign up for paypal they do that whole insert 2 cents in your account, etc.

My friend had a phisher try to steal his paypal info, so like they said above you probably logged onto a fake sight, because they look just like real thing. JUST LIKE!!!!

Where are you man? We want to know how you got butt fucked over paypal. I think most likely you got caught on a phish hook but you need to clear this up. A lot of us got paypal and is always on watch.

I NEVER leave any funds in my Paypal unless I know I'ma be using them in the next 24 hours. Paypal ain't FDIC insured and I've heard far too many tales of them effin up peoples' accounts in the past.

I get a deposit and instantly transfer it if I know I'm not buying anything.

I was worried about that too....but found out as long as you don't tell them it's a debit card they just treat it like an account....

Your ACE check cashing card can accept direct deposit....and when you put in the routing info it accepts any deposits accordingly.

That's interesting.

Paypal is real bitch ass company. Very bad customer service, little empathy towards your issues and seemingly, little common sense.

I had to re-order the paypal debit card, these suckas got my real address from my CC, they send it out, but won't let the postal service put it in a P.O.Box.

My address is xxxx Main st. Westbubblefuck, FU, I just have my mail forwarded because I'm out of town alot. I sure don't want that card just sitting at the house. These fuckers simply won't get it.

:hmm:

I still ain't got that replacement card.

:hmm:

don't know if you have their number but if not here you go
paypal 1-888-221-1161

my paypal account <60.00 always
account linked to it < 5.00 always
balance required to keep account open=1.00

OK here we go, I called my bank (washington Mutual) because I needed to check my balance to balance my check book before I go shopping with my nephews with my debit card.

While talking to the rep she tells me that I have numerous overdraft fees?

She then tells me that I have several e-transactions from my acount the night before.

Michael Ligeza (the name on the transaction) keeps attempting to withdraw various funds on my account...first he tried to get $5,ooo and it didn't go through, (first over charge), then 4, 500 (second overcharge), $4,000 (overcharge), etc.

So now I go online to check my paypal account and it says that I have suspious activity (no shit!).

I then see a bunch of failed transactions...

My bank is like how do we know you didn't just have some ebay purchase or business deal.

So I explain why would the same person using the same name and e-mail adress do repeated transactions that failed? and then stop when they got less then what they originally requested?

After that and some arguing, calling the manager and threatening to call the Federal Trade Comission, I get this settled...
They freeze ALL my

ALL my accounts are frozen and then I realize that scheduled payments I have for bills did not go through!

So I have to call the gas company, two credit cards, and cable so I won't be penelized.

So now I have to file a police report.

They don't really do anything. But the paper work is good if the bank or any other company gives you any problems.

I call paypal and curse them out and they agree to credit me the money that was already in the account.

My bank filed a affidivit of fraud, closed all my accounts, credited all fees and contacts paypal also to curse them out again.

Paypal says I must be a victim of phishing or a virus (I am a BGOL resident and I didn't get caught with that, alot of people think this board is all about porn but I can tell you I have learned some important information on the board about IT, money, etc.)

Paypal pretty much blames me for everything but the fact that their own site noticed a problem and let it continue hurt their arguement.

And I have a firewall and McAfee security suite and run Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy everyday and a McAfee Virus scan every 5 days.

I rarely use paypal and haven't used it to make a purchase in about 6 months.

So the bank thinks it could be a simple mistake (how did they get my e-mail address?), whatever, this is some hacking shit.

Anyway I change ALL my passwords (even on BGOL), change all my bank account numbers.

Paypal still hasn't sent me an e-mail to confirm from their side.

MY ADVICE: check your paypal account frequently, never link it to your bank account, overdraft protection on your checking account can be bad sometimes. And, Make sure you have some type of security on your PC.

Just to close out this thread...

what do you guys think?

Do you think its paypal's fault, an innocent mistake by someone entering the wrong info, a hacker with too much free time or my fault?

Yooooooooo...great info!!! Glad to hear everything worked out Playahaitian...

Yo.. I'm inclined to believe you slipped up somewhere along the road. But to be clear it's not your fault. Someone robs you it's never your fault it's the criminals. A few years ago someone was trying to use my credit card to buy gas in Flordia. Wachovia caught that shit, kudos to them. I have no idea how this happened but I think someone cloned my card at some point. This was my credit card and not by bankcard but it very easily could have been. I'm very careful where I use the my debit card now and more often than not use credit cards and just transfer the money immediately. You are protected with credit cards you are screwed with debit cards. In my situation the bank called me I cancelled the card. Got a new one and issued fraud alerts with all the credit bureaus. I suggest you do the same. If you don't get any help go to www.clarkhoward.com and hit dude up. He hates eBay and Paypal because of their piss poor customer service.

Hey Das...let's say I use the prepaid debit cards and I am able to route or have money deposited to it can I then just simply go to any ATM and withdraw cash from the card...do I get a PIN or something when I purchase the card?

the saga continues, cause paypal is still giving me issues, I will PM some members with further info and add one final post to resolve everything.

Again, don't link up your bank account to paypal!

Piggybacking on dasmybike's advice...I got a prepaid Mastercard today...one they charge a fee of $9.95...two you get your routing number on the spot if you pick up an application (you don't have to apply you still get your temp card there) but you have to get your account number when you call in after activating your card...I almost bust that lady ass arguing with her and when she asked me where'd I get my information from what could I say? BGOL? Still though very useful info...good post...sorry I couldn't help you out playa...all I can say is take their "advice" and keep it in a safe place in case they want it back...

*edit*

And I did get the card...

Thanks for the details but if you ever got to the central question I don't know. Or maybe I just missed it. What were you doing online prior to your paypal card being hijacked?

Did you click a link in an official looking email that began with "Dear PayPal user. We noticed some suspicious activitity on your shit and we may need to close it. Click this link to verify...?
