In 2016, Christine Jacobsen decided to take an at-home DNA test. Both of her parents had immigrated to the US from Denmark, she said, and she was curious about her heritage.
"I expected the results to show that nearly all of me was Danish," Jacobsen, who was 64 at the time of her Ancestry.com test, told Insider. But to her shock, her pie chart estimated that a quarter of her DNA came from West Africa. The Ancestry matches she received were far too distant to help find any close relatives.
So two years later, she did a similar test using 23andMe, which matched her with a Black woman the company identified as a likely first cousin. The women compared their shared DNA and set up a family tree, quickly concluding that her biological father was brothers with the woman's father.
Jacobsen said the people she told about the discovery found it difficult to believe. "My skin is light," she said. But the results surfaced a long-buried family conflict about her paternity.

Now 70, Jacobsen grew up in a New York City household where "there was always a level of dysfunction," she said.
"It was the '50s and '60s, and my parents were liberal progressives," she said. They would often put her to bed without a babysitter and then head out to listen to jazz in Harlem. Sometimes they'd tell her they were having "friends sleep over," sending her to the home of a neighbor or cousin, she said.
In her mid-teens, Jacobsen realized that the sleepovers were swingers parties — events at which married or partnered people have casual sex with others, with their spouse in attendance. "I knew, but it was never discussed," she said.

Traditionally, a swinging couple "is supposed to be in the swinging event together, and it's supposed to cement or unify their relationship," Jacobsen explained. That makes the lifestyle different from open relationships or polyamory, in which one member of the couple builds a relationship outside their primary partnership.

But Jacobsen said that when she was a teen, her mother broke the rules of swinging by having a relationship with another participant. Her mom's lover and confidant would "hang out" at their home, Jacobsen said, calling it a "stressor for my father and me."
One night in 1968, she had a fierce argument with the man, whom she recalls exclaiming: "What do you know? You don't even know that your father's Black!"
Jacobsen said her mother started screaming. "Oh my God, you promised you'd never tell," she recalled her saying.
When her mother had calmed down, Jacobsen said, she showed her daughter a faded photograph hidden in the leaves of a book. "I think this might be your biological father," Jacobsen said her mother told her. "He was a light-skinned dancer from the Bahamas."

"I thought to myself, 'What the hell is going on here?'" Jacobsen said.
A few hours later, she told her father. "He replied, 'Well, that's ridiculous,'" she recalled. "'You look too much like my mother for that to be true.'"
Jacobsen said the truth about her conception was pushed under the rug

Jacobsen said she wasn't surprised that the conversation ended there. "Our family had a long tradition of burying secrets," she said. "They'd be conveniently forgotten about."
"It was easier for my mom, my dad, and me to sweep uncomfortable things under the rug," she added.

Jacobsen's parents died years before her 23andMe test. After she matched with the Black woman, the pair used their DNA information and family trees to determine that her biological father was probably the woman's uncle, Paul Meere Jr. Since he'd died decades ago, there was no way to prove he was the one, Jacobsen said.
But biographical evidence supported their conclusion. Meere's family members told Jacobsen he was a talented dancer whose family came from the Bahamas, as her mother had said. He had served as a Marine in an all-Black unit in World War II, and had been living in New York City at the time Jacobsen was conceived. He'd died at the age of 61.
"My cousin sent me some links to old stories about his career as a performer," Jacobsen said. "He looked so similar to me."
Her first cousin introduced her to some other relatives who'd heard through the family grapevine that Meere had had numerous relationships. And Meere's former wife, whom Jacobsen later tracked down, confirmed that Meere had a reputation for swinging in the early '50s.
 
So, would she be eligible to receive reparations?
This! That's why reparations if it happens will be some shit. Black folk will be the face of it but get the least benefit. No different than civil rights. It got passed because of us but white women, gays, spanish, arabs and asians benefit more than we do. How the fuck is there a wosb certification for government contracts when more than half the country is made up of women.

If you are confused about your race/hate the skin you're in or have a keeper like clearance thomas or flaming like billy porter, white folk will embrace you and use you as a plant to destabilize the black community.

If you were to pump hard rock, violence, meth, guns, redline, liquor and gayness into any white community they would experience the same issues we have.

I'm for all black people getting reparations but it won't happen.

What you really should be concerned with is what if they did give reparations right now to all black folk. Without a plan, it would end back up in the hands of white folk in now time.
 
I think biracial folks of black/white decent who look like her aren’t the majority. I have a cousin who is biracial and looks white. There are others that exist too. Hell, I believe the story goes that Adam Clayton Powell passed for white at college.
 
So her mom was slumming in the 1950s? She's only a quarter black, so maybe her father was half-black and white passing.
 
Reparations as an abstract idea is wonderful. We earned and deserve it as a people for hundreds of years of slavery in America. The problems of it actually EVER happening is zero. This is why I think all the people involved with reparations talk on a federal level is on some grift shit. It aint happening. It takes 60 votes in Senate which means at least 7 GOP would have to vote for it IF the Dems have 53 seats,then the house would have to vote for it and then signed by a President. This process happens after we determine who would be eligible,how much is to be paid,how its to be paid over how long a period of time. To do it right and have the monies actually help all Black Americans would be in the trillions of $. Aint gonna happen. The only viable reparations that can be done is state by state and thats not gonna happen cause the states that implimented slavery are the pooriest states in America,Mississippi,Alabama,Louisana,S Carolina,Tennessee,Kentucky etc. only Ga has the resources to pay the billions and billions of $ to Black Georgians who are decedents of slavery and maybe Florida. its all a grift to me cause no way its happening under the current system

No because she's been living as a white woman for 70 years and she's received those benefits as such so she wouldn't be able to receive nothing but what he's gotten.

She's aged out of establishing anything besides her white parents wicked dysfuctional past.

As early as 1662, fines for fornication across the color line were set at double the amount for in-group nonmarital sex, typically 1,000 rather than 500 pounds of tobacco. However, the Northampton County court, at least, was slow to change. Several prosecutions for fornication between blacks and whites during the 1660s resulted in fines of 500 pounds of tobacco. Only much later is there any evidence that higher fines were enforced, around the time when the legislature passed a series of laws with harsher penalties for interracial sex and marriage. In 1691, the legislature decreed that any white person who married a person of color had to leave Virginia within three months.

The law also addressed the status of the mixed-race children of white women. The white unmarried mother of a mixed-race child paid a fine of fifteen pounds, or was sold as a servant for a five-year term if she could not pay the fine; the child was bound out as a servant to the age of thirty. In 1705, the term of indenture for a “mulatto bastard” was raised to thirty-one, and a white person who married a “negro or mulatto” was sentenced to imprisonment for six months and a ten-pound fine, rather than banishment. The punishment was extended to the next generation in 1723, when children of mulatto or Indian women serving their thirty- or thirty-one-year indentures were also sentenced to serve thirty to thirty-one years (this was later reduced to eighteen for female children and twenty-one for males in 1765). Tamar Smith, a white woman in Northampton County, served the prison term and paid the fine in order to marry mulatto Edward Hitchens, but few other interracial marriages were recorded after 1705. By contrast, a significant number of women continued to be charged with interracial bastardy. In Northampton County there were numerous cases of interracial fornication before 1705, but after 1705, we see increasing charges against both white and mulatto women for bastard bearing as well, including Tabitha Cope, Hannah Carter, Margret Edsall, Esther Weeks, Anne Toyer, and Elisha Pitts. These women paid their fines or named the father to have him brought into court to “make the county harmless” and pay the church wardens. In Accomack County, Elizabeth Lang, a white indentured servant, gave birth to the child of an Indian, Oni Kitt, in 1671/72, and agreed to add three years to her indenture. In 1704, Mary Newman was accused of having a “bastard child by a Negro”; Mary admitted to fornication but named William Edgg, a white man, as the father. In 1707, white servant Rachell Wood, was sentenced to an extra year of service and sale for bearing a “bastard mulata female child.” Wood resisted serving the extra year and was not sold.

Thus, in Virginia, a significant number of white servant women continued to form relationships with men of color, often bearing mixed-race children, but they paid an increasingly heavy price for doing so. Women and men at the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum defied increasing pressure from slaveholding elites to separate white from “negro,” especially when it resulted in more free children of color born to white women. As in Louisiana, this was a small but important population in Virginia, one that maintained links with enslaved people of color as well as free white people. Legal proscriptions could not keep people apart; however, they did, in both Virginia and Louisiana, keep them from creating the kind of community that was already blossoming in Cuba.**
