A sure way of not being the G.O.A.T is when you say it yourself

Remember when they use to ask Magic and Jordan who the best was and Magic would say Jordan, Jordan would say Magic.

LeBron James declares himself 'the greatest player of all time' because of championship with Cavaliers

James says his 2016 NBA title with the Cavs made him the best ever

Basketball's GOAT debate may still rage on in think pieces, debate shows and bar conversations on a near daily basis, but it's settled in LeBron James' head ... and it has been for a few years now.

LeBron is the greatest of all time, according to LeBron.

James apparently came to that conclusion after the 2016 NBA Finals, which were won by his Cleveland Cavaliers. After falling into a three-games-to-one series hole against the mighty Golden State Warriors, LeBron led the Cavs to three straight wins (two of them coming on the road) and recorded a triple-double in the decisive Game 7.

He was the unanimous Finals MVP and, more importantly, he delivered on his promise of bringing a championship to his hometown Cavaliers -- their first in franchise history.

At that point, LeBron was ready to call himself the best ever.

"That one right there made me the greatest player of all time ... that's what I felt," LeBron told business partners Maverick Carter, Randy Mims and Rich Paul during an episode of ESPN's "More Than An Athlete" series that aired Sunday night. "I was super, super ecstatic to win one for Cleveland because of the 52-year drought. ... The first wave of emotion was when everyone saw me crying, like, that was all for 52 years of everything in sports that's gone on in Cleveland. And then after I stopped, I was like -- that one right there made you the greatest player of all time.

"Everybody was just talking -- how [the Warriors] were the greatest team of all time, like it was the greatest team ever assembled," he said. "And for us to come back, you know, the way we came back in that fashion, I was like, 'You did, you did something special.' That's probably one of the only times in my career I felt like, oh, s---, like you did something special. I haven't had, really had time, to really, like, sit back and think, but that ... that was a moment."

LeBron has long been discussed as a candidate to dethrone Michael Jordan as basketball's greatest of all time, but never before has James himself come out and said that he has surpassed MJ ... until now. Knowing how much LeBron admires and respects Jordan -- he wears No. 23 because of Jordan -- that's a pretty significant statement.

Of course, it's one that many people will likely continue to disagree with despite a closing gap in regards to stats and accomplishments. Jordan still holds the edge in MVP awards (five to LeBron's four) and, more importantly, NBA titles (six to three) but LeBron has Jordan beat in some other categories -- including All-NBA selections -- and will likely soon pass MJ on the NBA's all-time scoring leaderboard.

But for some, it might not even matter what LeBron does with his remaining years in the league if he doesn't match or beat Jordan's six rings. And for others, it still won't matter. To them, Jordan will still be the best.

However, it appears LeBron's mind is made up, and King James sits on the throne in his own mind.

Lebron is corny

I don't know if he misspeaks or he does it intentionally to play with the media.

You can't talk about team, and then say well beating a team makes me the greatest player ever as if you did it alone

So was that 73 win Golden State team the greatest team ever, or the one now that added a top five player. :hmm:

What people fail to realize is, Jordan accomplished more in his first 11 full seasons, than Lebron did in 16 seasons.

The most amazing stats in Jordan's career are 10 scoring titles in 10 straight full seasons (missed it his rookie season), and 9 First Team All defensive teams.

Just imagine doing that yourself, then hearing a nigga with 1 scoring title calling himself the GOAT. :roflmao::roflmao:

You would think he lost his damn mind.

That was his goal to bring a championship to Cleveland, so for him doing that makes him the greatest. So he boast about it.

When his career is all said and done despite his several finals losses I don’t see anyone not mentioning him in the conversation about great basketball players.

Ali used to say he was the greatest of all time all the time when he was still boxing. Every chance he got. If there was a mic in his face chances are he said it. So why is it now bad for business for an athlete to say that they're the goat? Wait I know why.... Because another number 23's legacy is being called into question when LeBron makes that claim. Now if anybody can give me a logical reason why one athlete can say it and another can't I'd love to hear it. Key word is logical.

I have no issue with his comment. He’s basically saying it how he felt. That’s PERSONAL. Has nothing to do with any sort of facts against other players.

"That one right there made me the greatest player of all time ... that's what I felt,"

Muhammad Ali and I enter our disagreement with the thread title.

“Roses are red, violets are blue,
The champ noticed no one had voted,
So this one star is for you.” The Greatest of All Time.

the only ones entitled to beef are the folks that have have a stake to claim the title. If that last sentence does not apply to you and you have a problem with it just think about how much of a weirdo stan you have to be to be mad about it. disagree, that's real but the genuine anger in here...you niggas are sick man.

LeBron is slowly transitioning into Kobe. He must be taking those Black Mamba Classes. LOL!
His ego is growing and wildin' out.

It's only a matter of time before the hero lives long enough to become the villain.

Off the court, Lebron is without argument the GOAT

What has Lebron contributed to the world and society greater than Air Jordan brand?

I think Lebron has better character, more outspoken, better family man, much cleaner lifestyle, and hell of a philanthropist, but he is not an "Ali".

But he will never impact generations of kids and adults, nationwide or worldwide like Jordan.

Jordan raised more people's self esteem than any athlete ever. I remember a time in the 80's when just wearing a pair of Jordan's at school made you feel like a better basketball player or jump higher, and made very poor kids feel more accepted around middle class kids.

I do not think Lebron as iconic now, as Jordan was in the 80's, not even close.

Uh oh. Get ready for it. I hear his theme music...

LeBron is going "Heel," same as he did when he went to Miami.....

He'll say all this inflammatory ish.... Get out into the spotlight and "show his ass," so to speak... And keep his name out their in conversations....

Watch im a year or two whem he bows out of the game he'll transition into being the likeable hero again and he'll starr peddling his other businesses.....

It's a plan that has worked for numerous other athletes....

Hell Floyd turned heel and never looked back

The Rock was a heel a time or two

Barkley, and look at his image now in the mainstream... Old white women love Barkley

Its all a part of the plan..... And I'm saying this as a Cleveland fan don't believe any of this talk

Is it too early to nominate a post for DUMBEST OF 2019?

The first statement alone...
:hithead:

And this is coming from a Jordan fan

Do not compare Ali to any of today's players. Ali faced prison. None of these cats lost championships for standing up for their rights.

Bron is the best off the court now but he ain't on Kareems level to me.

Ali was saying he was the greatest of all time BEFORE he faced prison so you can save that argument.

It's illogical to call yourself the greatest when your success and failure is literally determined by others. There are "individual" sports. Basketball isn't one of them.

How does that fit into this? Others can call you the greatest in a team sport but you can't? Shouldn't that argument extend to other people calling someone the greatest in a team sport as well? After all a certain number 23 gets that nod because of "individual" accolades and accomplishments in a "team" sport.

Did he prove he was the GOAT after saying it and before retiring?
The point is he said it while still boxing. Every chance he got. The argument is you can't claim to be the GOAT because it diminishes your claim.

IMHO I believe "The Greatest" tag was more self-promotion than bravado. History has a way of providing clarity and I think this is why people are comfortable referring to Ali as the greatest even when though boxing has had it's fair share of greats.
