2015 Ford F-150 2.7L EcoBoost Rated 325 HP, 375 LB-FT, Tows Max 8500 LBS
Base 3.5L Makes 283 HP, 255 LB-FT
Ford announced official output figures and tow ratings today for the 2015 F-150's new twin-turbo 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 and base 3.5-liter V-6. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost produces 325 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque, and is rated in a rear-drive F-150 to tow 8500 pounds with a payload capacity of 2250 pounds.

Ford says power-to-weight ratio for a 2015 2.7-liter EcoBoost F-150 is improved by 15 percent compared to a 2014 model with the 5.0-liter V-8 thanks to the lighter aluminum construction. The new boosted V-6 uses compacted graphite iron (CGI) for its engine block, the same material Ford's 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V-8 is made out of. Ford notes that this is the first application of a CGI block in a gas engine.

The base 3.5-liter V-6, which replaces the previous 3.7-liter, makes 283 hp and 255 lb-ft. That's down 19 hp and 23 lb-ft from its predecessor, but Ford says the new engine's independent variable camshaft timing delivers torque across a wide rpm range along with improved fuel economy. The naturally aspirated 3.5-liter also gets a die-cast aluminum engine block, six-bolt main bearing caps, a fully counterweighted forged crankshaft, and cast exhaust manifolds for heavy-duty use. The engine is rated to tow a maximum of 7600 pounds, while payload is capped at 1910 pounds.

To show how the new twin-turbo engine stacks up against the competition, Ford shot a video of a towing test conducted on Arizona's punishing Davis Dam road. In the video, a 2015 F-150 Lariat equipped with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 challenges a 2014 Ram 1500 V-6 EcoDiesel and 2014 Chevrolet Silverado with the 5.3-liter V-8 to an uphill towing battle. All trucks are four-wheel-drive models, and hitched to identical 7000-pound trailers. Ford F-150 marketing manager Eric Peterson gave us a little background on the test:

"The reason we did the video is because all of this may look good on paper but we wanted to see how it looked in the real world. We easily beat the Ram and won two out of three times against the 5.3L Silverado. These two new powertrains, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost and 3.5-liter V-6, are proving to be great engines and allowing us to save weight without sacrificing anything."

For an example of those weight savings, Peterson points to the 2015 Ford F-150 Lariat 2.7-liter EcoBoost, which weighs 732 pounds less than a 2014 model equipped with the 5.0-liter V-8. We're told the 2015 F-150 Lariat will weigh just under 5000 pounds.

The 2.7-liter EcoBoost in Ford’s aluminum F-150 officially rated at an impressive 325 HP
In a bid to increase fuel economy, the 2015 Ford F-150 full-size pickup truck relies more heavily than ever on downsized engines.

That’s left some wondering whether the new F-150 will have the capability truck buyers expect.

Well, the numbers for the all-new 2.7-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6 and naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V6 are in.

The smaller turbo engine produces 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque which, Ford claims, gives the 2.7-liter 2015 F-150 a better power-to-weight ratio than a 2014 F-150 equipped with the 5.0-liter V8.

That grunt allows for a maximum payload rating of 2,250 pounds and a max tow rating of 8,500 pounds with rear-wheel drive, or 2,160 and 8,400 pounds with four-wheel drive.

That leaves the F-150 2.7-liter EcoBoost in competition with the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. As the most fuel-efficient full-size truck currently available, it’s the best yardstick for the new Ford.

The Ram’s 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 produces 240 horsepower and a stump-pulling 420 pound-feet of torque. With four-wheel drive, it’s max payload rating is 1,620 pounds, while its max tow rating is 9,050 pounds.

However, the point of buying a big truck with a small engine is fuel economy, and Ford hasn’t released those figures yet.

The Ram EcoDiesel managed 28 mpg highway in EPA testing. Can the turbocharged gasoline F-150 beat it?

The 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 gets the majority of the attention, but the 2015 F-150 will come standard with a 3.5-liter mill.

This engine replaces the 3.7-liter V6 offered in the 2014 F-150 and, naturally, Ford is predicting improved efficiency.

However, with 283 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque, the new engine is a little down on power compared to the outgoing 3.7-liter V6′s 302 hp and 278 lb-ft.

Ford claims a 5 percent improvement in power-to-weight ratio, though. Maximum payload capacity is 1,910 pounds, while max towing capacity is 7,600 pounds.

In addition to the two new engines, the 2015 F-150 will be offered with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and a 5.0-liter V8 that carry over from the 2014 model.

The new F-150 also sports an aluminum body – which Ford says will trim up to 700 pounds compared to previous models – and a host of new safety and convenience tech.

That should leave buyers with a lot to think about when this truck hits showrooms. The F-150 is the best selling vehicle in the U.S., so the stakes couldn’t be higher for Ford.

10 Cars That Weigh More Than the 2015 Ford F-150 SuperCrew
OFFICIAL: 2015 Ford F-150 is a Lightweight
When Ford released an update on the 2015 F-150 earlier this week, the dramatic difference in weight between the 2014 steel-body and 2015 aluminum-body F-150 Lariat SuperCrew caught our attention. According to Ford, the 2015 F-150 Lariat’s aluminum-alloy body helps cut weight by as much as 700 pounds compared to the 2014 model.

Impressed, we asked Ford PR rep Mike Levine for the curb weight of a less-optioned truck, the base model 2015 F-150 SuperCrew. He came back with 4475 pounds -- the preliminary curb weight from Ford of a 2015 F-150 4x2 SuperCrew equipped with the 3.5-liter V-6 engine.

If you just exhaled a low whistle, that is the appropriate response; for a full-size pickup truck with the shortest bed and the largest cab configuration available to weigh in under 4500 pounds is a startling feat of engineering. Consider that a steel-bodied 2014 F-150 4x2 SuperCrew with the same powertrain weighs in at 5128 pounds (per Ford Motor Company), a number in line with the F-150’s current competition:

-2015 Ford F-150 4x2 SuperCrew 3.5L V-6: 4475 pounds
-2014 Ford F-150 4x2 SuperCrew 3.7L V-6: 5128 pounds
-2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab 2wd 4.3L V-6: 4942 pounds
-2014 Ram 1500 ST 4x2 Crew Cab 3.6L V-6: 4924 pounds
-2014 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 4x2 with 4.0L V-6 (6.5-ft bed)* : 5010 pounds
-2014 Toyota Tundra CrewMax 4x2 with 4.6L V-8 (5.5-ft bed)*: 5335 pounds
*Toyota does not sell a CrewMax (largest cab available) with the 4.0L V-6

The new 2015 F-150 SuperCrew is also 210 pounds lighter than the Ford's lightest 2014 F-150, a base model, regular cab 4x2, which tips the scales at 4685 pounds (though not lighter than Chevrolet's smallest, regular cab 4x2 Silverado 1500 which weighs in at 4387 pounds.) Since we ran out of full-size pickups to compare it to, we dove into our testing archive and found ten cars that weigh more than the 2015 F-150 SuperCrew:

1. 2014 Porsche Panamera Turbo: 4510 pounds
2. 2014 Audi A8 L TDI AWD: 4529 pounds
3. 2015 Hyundai Genesis V-8: 4588 pounds (the Genesis V-6 AWD is only 2 pounds lighter than the 2015 F-150 SuperCrew at 4473 pounds)
4. 2015 Kia K900 V-8: 4624 pounds
5. 2014 Tesla Model S P85+: 4633 pounds
6. 2014 Maserati Ghibli AWD: 4648 pounds
7. 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550: 4786 pounds
8. 2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith: 5328 pounds
9. 2014 Rolls-Royce Ghost: 5500 pounds
10. 2014 Bentley Flying Spur W-12, AWD: 5644 pounds

Many on the list shouldn’t be a surprise. It’s not hard to see how ultra-high-end luxury barges from Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Mercedes-Benz can outweigh the F-150, given the way these luxury brands swaddle their clientele in leather, wood, and precious metals. More surprising might be the curb weight of the Audi A8 L, since Audi pioneered aluminum-alloy construction with the original A8. The hefty curb weight of the Tesla Model S also comes as a bit of a shock, until you remember the Model S’ aluminum body rests atop 6381 lithium-ion laptop batteries. That an F-150 weighs less than a Porsche Panamera Turbo? Well, that is just silly.

So, the 2015 Ford F-150 apparently has a several-hundred-pound advantage over its truck competition and many large cars, but we will have to wait until we test it to determine whether such dramatic weight loss negatively impacts functionality, durability, or even a low base price. Stay tuned.

Now that the new 2015 Ford F-150 is ready to be released, the American automaker has turned its attention on its Raptor performance truck.

Spy photographers have caught a Ford Raptor mule testing next-generation parts, sporting a new grille and hood along with the aluminum crew cab body from the 2015 Ford F-150. Other current Raptor parts have also found their way onto the mule, but noticeably missing are the signature blue shocks in the rear wheel wells which suggests that Ford could be testing new components for the next-generation Raptor.

The new Raptor is expected to be either a 2016 or 2017 model year pickup and the spy photographers noted that when the mule accelerated, it sounded more like an EcoBoost V6 under the hood than a V8.

#2. Chevrolet Silverado-480,414
#3. Dodge Ram-355,673
#4. GMC Sierra-184,389
#5. Toyota Tacoma-159,485

Ford is not worried about the award, they pretty much know this upcoming F-150 will get it back. I'll give Dodge credit, the Ecodiesel and 8-speed auto were trump moves. Let's see if they can make it 3 years in a row.

Damn, the Nissan Titan got outsold by the Chevrolet Avalanche! The Avalanche ended production in 2012 as a 2013 model. Nissan got a lot of work to do with the Titan...

btw, the game changers are nissan and toyota who are both introducing full-size trucks next year with turbo diesel (cummings) engines.

thenm, after about a yr, both nissan and toyota will introduce own turbo diesels... and that's when i'll jump in.
This right here is the biggest game changer. Never before has a company tried to do this large of a mass production with Aluminum. Sure there have been Aluminum cars before this, but they have been lower numbers (maybe 10,000/year or less of the certain model) and have been reserved for more expensive sport and luxury cars. This F-150 will start in the high $20k's and be produced at about 700,000 a year, making it the most affordable Aluminum bodied vehicle available.

Jaguar is going Aluminum extensive on their all new XE entry level car

Toyota and Nissan fucked up. They should have been had diesels by now. Dodge is the one responsible for them (and everyone) even considering putting a diesel in a half-ton
2014-10be-chrysler-ram.jpg

GM is sitting back and watching to see what the Ram 1500 diesel sales are like before they might dust off the 4.5L Duramax V8 they had in development back in 2009

x10pt_8c001_opt.jpg

The biggest heartbreak in diesel history played out last year (2009) with the news of Ford's, Dodge's, and GM's decision to postpone their 1/2-ton diesel engine programs indefinitely. It literally broke our hearts to get a glimpse of such radical diesel-powered machinery, only to have it put on hold due to the economic implosion our country is currently rallying to dig ourselves out of.

Of the Big Three's 1/2-ton diesel engine offerings, the one we got closest to was the 4.5L Duramax V-8 that was scheduled to be on sale by 2010.

GM promised power ratings for the 4.5-liter Duramax would be more than 310 hp and 520 pounds-feet of torque with up to 25 percent better fuel economy than a comparable gasoline engine.

The Duramax was apparently delivering great performance with towing and payload capabilities well beyond those possible with the two-mode hybrid pickup trucks. Even more importantly, the diesel Silverado was on track to achieve combined fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon, compared to the 22 mpg combined rating of the hybrid. At the time the program was put on the shelf, ninety percent of the production tooling was ready to go.

“The 4.5-liter V-8 is fully developed and ready,” said Mark Cieslak, GM’s full-size truck chief engineer. “[If we decided to offer it] we could launch it in a heartbeat.”

The next big gamechanger besides the F-150 is the New 2015 Chevy Colorado
10977143446_df92b0519e_b.jpg

and GMC Sierra midsize trucks
11926114775_be5c37e8c8_b.jpg

11926114185_3b86105fd7_b.jpg

Once again, Toyota and Nissan had this segment on lock. The Ford Ranger bounced, and so did the Colorado and Canyon. But the Tacoma and Frontier didn't move the needle forward. Now the Colorado and Canyon return totally new, with more powerful engine options than both, a 6 speed automatic, and the segment's only Diesel engine option. A 2.8L Duramax Turbo Diesel that is projected to give the trucks mid-30's mpg
10977149626_1326193b0b_b.jpg

And I would trust a Cummins diesel over one Toyota or Nissan is newly developing. Cummins was smart, they offered Nissan an exclusive to the 5.0L diesel, but Nissan couldn't agree to it based on the price of the exclusivity and the amount of trucks they sell. So that's when Cummins went to Toyota and offered them the exact same engine.

All-New 2015 Ford F-150 Pricing Goes Live, Starts at $26,615
We’ve learned much about the all-new 2015 Ford F-150 in the last few months: that it will make substantial use of aluminum; the output, weight, and tow ratings of models with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 and 3.5-liter V-6; and now we know how much the 2015 F-150 will cost. Ford has released pricing info, and the base XL and XLT models will increase by $395; that translates to $26,615 and $31,925, respectively.

Ford has simplified the lineup as well, going from ten models to five. In addition to the XL and XLT, there will be Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trim levels. The price for the Lariat increases by $895, to $39,730. King Ranch models go up by $3615, to $49,690; Platinum models by $3055, to $52,155.

With the price increases come increased standard features. The XL and XLT receive a 2.3-inch “productivity screen,” a 4.2-inch LCD screen in the center stack, and a telescoping steering wheel. The XLT adds BoxLink, a flexible cargo-box system and a power-locking tailgate—features not available on the 2014 F-150. The XL and XLT are offered in regular-cab, rear-wheel-drive models with a 6.5-foot-long cargo bed.

The Lariat adds to the above list of features an eight-inch gauge cluster, LED cargo-box lighting (not offered on 2014 models), heated/cooled front seats, power-folding sideview mirrors, and a rearview camera. The Lariat is offered only as a SuperCab with a 6.5-foot-long bed and rear-wheel drive.

The King Ranch builds upon this with quad LED headlights, LED taillamps, and first-ever LED spotlights built into both sideview mirrors. In addition to the locking tailgate, there is a power remote release, 110-volt front/rear power outlets, blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, push-button start (not available on 2014 models), a heated steering wheel, real wood trim, and rear heated seats. The Platinum tops it all off with massaging front seats and inflatable rear seatbelts. Both the King Ranch and Platinum models are standard with the SuperCrew and 5.5-foot-long bed and rear-wheel drive.

As far as powertrains are concerned, the XL and XLT have the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6; upgrading to the turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 runs you $495. Moving up to the turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 costs $1995. The Lariat offers the 2.7-liter V-6 as standard with the 5.0-liter V-8 available depending on wheelbase. The 5.0-liter V-8 is standard on both the Platinum and the King Ranch, with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 a $400 option. Regardless of powertrain, a six-speed automatic transmission is standard and four-wheel drive is available.

The all-new 2015 F-150 is kicking sand in the faces of its competition in all the factors that matter: price, performance, and value. How the likes of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, the Ram 1500, and the Toyota Tundra will fight back remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: It’s going to be an epic battle for every inch of market share.

2015 Ford F-150 Starts at $26,615
Dealers start taking orders for the brand-new 2015 Ford F-150 pickup this week, and a Ford spokesperson has just confirmed pricing for the truck’s redesigned lineup. The lineup is simplified to five models—down from 10 last year—and the base XL truck starts at $26,615 with destination, just $395 more than the 2014 F-150.

The XL model comes standard with a naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 that makes 283 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. Upgrading to the 2.7-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 costs only $495 extra and brings much higher totals of 325 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque along with a maximum tow rating of 8500 lbs.

Next up is the $31,925 XLT model, which also comes standard with the 3.5-liter V-6 and offers the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 as a $495 option. This price is also up $395 compared with last year’s XLT model. Although we don’t yet have full details on equipment content for the different trim levels of the 2015 Ford F-150, we do know that the new truck offers more standard features than its predecessor, not to mention significant weight savings from its new aluminum body.

In addition to the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6, XL and XLT models also offer the 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 that carries over from last year’s truck. It will cost less to upgrade than before, though, as the 3.5 EcoBoost now costs $1995 over the base naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V-6--$400 less than the upgrade cost last year.

The Lariat trim level goes up $895 in price to $39,730 with destination, and it comes standard with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6. Although some trim levels from last year including the STX, FX2, FX4, and Limited are gone for 2015, a Ford spokesperson told us that the 2015 Ford F-150 will offer packages with equivalent equipment packages. For example, the FX4 trim level will be replaced with a stand-alone off-road option package. Stay tuned for more information about the option structure for the 2015 F-150 as we get nearer to its arrival at dealers.

The two top trims of the 2015 Ford F-150, the $49,690 King Ranch and $52,950 Platinum, both come standard with the same 5.0-liter V-8 engine, carrying over from last year. Opting for the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 costs $400 extra, and both of these Crew Cab models are not available with the smaller 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6.

Stay tuned for more information about the 2015 Ford F-150 lineup, including fuel economy and more detailed option pricing, over the next few weeks.
